On a completely different note, would having "an introduction to [physics area]" series of threads be a worthwhile project? I'm willing to do some if there is any interest.

For example, I was quite serious when I said that the basics of special relativity can be done with nothing more than high-school level mathematics. Not just how to calculate problems, but with rigourous derivations on how spacetime works. Personally, I find it a shame that it is not taught at that level--high-school physics classes typically only brush the surface. I know there are several high-schoolers here, although all those not too familiar with relativity would benefit.

So... speak up, denizens of the guild.

I like the "Introduction to [subject area]" idea a lot. This can work for a lot of areas, even without mathematical complexity. Part of the reason I like physics so much is 'cos my dad explained things to me in intuitive, non-mathematical terms. That, and it'd help a lot in the participation of the guild. I don't know if this is crossing some sort of line, but I'd really, really like to help if you do one that I know something about.

Unfortunately, truly understanding spacetime requires a bit of mathematics to be truly appreciated. For example, the fact that Lorentz transformations are rotations in spacetime is all too often overlooked.

That would be great. Actually, if you can think of some impovement to the current relativity project, feel free to speak up.

'Public' meaning that non-members can post? That wouldn't make it much different from the S&T forum, then. That would not be a good thing, given how much idiocy is routinely going on there.

i agree

people wizh absolutly no interest in physics would post loads of stupid things here. it would ruin the point of the guild.
