The mage and the snake :: At the Compound

From the main thread
Aletea
The gardens of the compound were very well cared for, and Dacian was entirely to blame for that. Well, that's what Hadrian would say about, it anyway. Dacian himself was quite pleased with the effect, and his bustling around the garden made quite the interesting sight.

Afterall, noone would expect someone who had managed to achieve what the mages had done, would be so happy to simply garden. But that's the way it was - in fact, the first child even avoided the garden simply because all the cheerfullness that Dacian displayed there bothered him. Ahneta called Ismet solitary; Dacian called him anit-social.

So Dacian was alone in the garden today, as always, before he caught sight of someone.

Ary Keeyara
Arianna found herself wandering around the compound aimlessly on this warm, spring day. It had been a few days since she had been told about the place. While it was extremely strange to be suddenly asked by a stranger to be a guardian she hadn't been too startled by it. After all, she had already had 3 similar situations take place. She was already the guardian of two boy toddlers and a strange gyrfalcon. So, she had excepted the request without a problem. However, she had been careful to become as informed as she could in the short meeting-after all, each of these adoptions tended to be extremely different and needed to be handled with care.

She soon realized she had ended up in the gardens. Putting a hand to her face slightly to keep the wind from blowing her brow and white locks in her face, she couldn't help but smile. All of the plants looked healthy, well nurutred, and happy if the later could be used towards flora. She could even hear the joyful chirps of birds and the buzz of bees going about their searches for food.

Blinking her violet eyes slightly at the angle of the sun, she turned her head to see the mage she had met before, the one who had come to explain the whole thing to her. It seemed he had seen her as well, by the direction of his gaze. Dropping her hands to her side from where they had been clasped behind her back, she made her way over to him, the corner of her lips turning upwards slightly.

Aletea
Dacian had felt some surprise at initially seeing Arianna, but then reminded himself that not everyone was like this fellow mages: some people did enjoy greenery. When she had reached him, he didn't have to smile at her; he was already smiling.

Briefly, he wondered what would happen when she met the other two - she knew about them of course, but they had both been convienently 'busy' when he had brought any of the guardians around. Though in Ahneta's case, she actually had been busy. He wasn't too certain about Hadrian, though...

"Good afternoon! Are you enjoying the compound?"

These plants were remarkably similar to the ones in his original realm, which was something that he and the others had already begun speculating on. It seemed that their realm had to be physically similar to wherever they went, or they couldn't even have established a link.

Ary Keeyara
Ari was one of those who enjoyed greenary quite a bit. As a matter of fact, she had a sort of cortyard in the center area of her home where she did her best to cultivate a large variety of plants. However, Ari had always been far better with animals then with plants, perhaps due to her shapeshifting race, so it wasn't near as wonderful as what was found here at the compound.

She gave a quiet, but delighted nod. "Very much, thank you," She murmured in a very pleasent tone. While Ari wasn't always as comfortable with someone she had just met as with friends, she treated them in the same friendly manner. That was just her way, "It's so beautiful out there...I could never get my garden like this."

Aletea
"Well, this is where I spend the majority of my free time. The others would very happily let this all go wild...so I feel that it's as much my duty as something fun."

Which wasn't neccessarily a bad thing, since enjoying your duty meant that it was likely done more often and with more enthusiasm.

"I really hope one of these Souls we're turning out has an affinity for plants. Sooner or later, this place will get to be too much for just me."

Not just because it would inevitably grow more, but because his time would be taken up more by other things as the Souls were born and grew older. A slight chuckle escaped his lips then, as he added something onto that.

"Ismet, the first child - he doesn't seem to like the gardens very much. Though he liked the park we took him to once, so I don't really understand why..." It was simple, really, though Dacian would neer look at it like this. Ismet liked wild nature, but hated spending time in some controlled bit of land like this.

Ary Keeyara
"It's a very enjoyable hobby...and it can be very rewarding," Ari agreed. His statement, however, almost made her wonder what the others liked then. Perhaps they all had their own special tasks that they enjoyed, such as Dacian.

She lifted her curled fingers to her lips to hide a small giggle, "Well, I do believe someone will come around who likes them. I can't imagine no one else will. It is a shame that Ismet doesn't..." She glanced to the side slightly, her gaze trailing along some hedges near by, "Mm...you know if you ever need I hand I could lend one. If you don't think I'd simply get in the way, that is." She looked back at him and grinned sheepishly.

Baniru
Baniru had decided to take a stroll around the compound, curious what kinds of things lay in other places- especially places in various locked doors. Unable to get into those, however, lead to finding another beautiful sight; a well kept garden, flowers blooming around greenery that looked somewhat peculiar.

There were two people who seemed to be doing something together... squinting her only eye left, (the other covered up by a delicate silk eyepatch) Baniru realized that just maybe she needed to get some sort of monocle unless her vision improved. Either thing was never going to happen.

"Excuse me!" she called out, noticing that there were two others conversing, "Am I interrupting anything?"

Aletea
Dacian had to agree with Ari's statement, and his nod reflected that. It was rewarding, even if he never really thought about it in terms like that; he just knew that he liked it.

"You would?" A broad grin grew from the smile on the mages face, "That would be nice. So long as it wouldn't be too much trouble for you, of course..."

It would certainly be much easier accepting volunteer garden-work, then trying to wrangle some deal with a gardener. And of course, dealing with the fact that Ahneta would have a fit if he suggested they bring someone in who was compelely unrelated to their work - and Hadrien wouldn't help him, that was for sure.

EDIT:

A moment later, Dacian heard someone and turned - oh, another guardian! Well, he supposed he should get used to running into various people out in the garden. "Good afternoon!"

"And of course not," was his greeting with a smile.

Ary Keeyara
"Oh, no no. I'm sure it'd be fine. I love being out in the fresh air and working around in gardens...I have one of my own, after all," Ari said with a bright smile, a small pink tint showing in her cheeks. Obviously she was more then willing to help out if he wanted her too. It would be a lot of fun, working in such an extravagent garden such as this when she was needed.

She blinked a little in surprise as Baniru came over to them, not from her appearance but instead because Ari had failed to notice her until she had spoken. But the small parting in her lips smoothed back out to its usual smile and she shook her head, "Oh no! You're not interupting at all."

Baniru
She smiled sheepishly at Dacian, feeling a little awkward at having come in at the middle of their conversation. There was a strong, sincere glow about him though, which made her feel more at ease.

Baniru turned her neck so hard to look at Arianna that she nearly gave herself whiplash, stumbling over.

"This is your garden Dacien...?"
"Oh, er- hello. Heh-ahem. So... my name is Baniru."

The woman slowly put out a hand for a handshake, thinking hard: This was what you did in social situations like this, right? She had already met Dacian, so he didn't need it.

Aletea
"Yes, this is my garden. Hadrian has his 'labs' (of course, they're more geared towards magical then scientific things, you understand), and Ahneta - well, I'm not exactly sure what she does."

Dacian paused then, his brow crinkling up in an almost comical manner as he thought about it. He knew that he could find her in her rooms, but she had an entire suite. Always locked, of course, but really! What could she possibly be doing there all day? Though she was gone quite a bit as well...

It was then that the mage caught sight of a familiar, blue-skinned little boy - who was just outside the gardens actually, and seemed to have decided to turn tail and go the other way upon noticing them.

"Ismet ~ come over here and meet some people! You should be more social."

It was with a grumpy expression, that the first child made his way into the gardens and over to them.

Ary Keeyara
Ari shook Baniru's hand without hesitation, not seeming too uncomfortable about the situation at all. "It's nice to meet you! I'm Arianna. You may call me Ari, if you like." She then turned her attention to Dacian as he spoke, which was only polite after all, listening to what he had to say about the other two mages she hadn't yet seen. Well, if they didn't have such open hobbies...perhaps they were more reserved people.

When a brightly colored, scaley skinned boy came into view Ari's eyes rounded ever so slightly in curiousity. Oh! So this was Ismet, was it? She refrained from commenting on how cute he was or something along those lines...somehow he didn't seem the type to want that sort of attention. She couldn't, however, keep herself from smiling in admiration, "Hello there."

Baniru
Baniru smiled at how Ari greeted her head on, and how Dacian was kind enough to talk to her as well. Most of the time, you just don't find that kind of amiability in the world these days.

"Ari it is," she said back, before politely turning to listen to Dacian as well. There were others like him? If he had told her this before, she must had been too preoccupied with her own little world...

They all sounded like good people, though the other mages seemed to be a little less enthusiastic about socializing than he was. But who could blame them? Bani was a bit of an antisocialist herself.

Coming out of her musings, she noticed that all attention was turned somewhere- a blue skinned, white headed... boy? Yes, boy.

"Ismet?" she looked down upon him, nearly having to stop a giggle from the expression he wore, "Nice to meet you."

Aletea
Ismet just gave a half-smile and a muttered hello to the the two women, before fixing a slightly irritated glare on Dacian. The little snake would have been very happy if he had managed to get away - but no, the sole socialite of his three guardians just had to spot him.

"Did you want something?" And it went without saying, of course, that there was another part to that : or did you just want to torment me?

Dacian dismissed this with a cheerful wave of his hand, and a wry comment to the two women, "I think he's prematurely entering that sulky teenager state," and then turning his gaze back to Ismet, "Be social. That's why I called you over."

That caused a glare from said-sulky child, but he didn't say anything.

"Anyway, how are you two settling in?"

Ary Keeyara
Ari refrained from laughing, knowing Ismet would not appreciate it. He already looked unhappy enough. Instead she focused on Dacian's question, which was a pleasent one for conversation purposes, "Oh, I'm doing quite well. It's nice to get to move around a new place, you know? I don't normally go around to areas I haven't been before...so it's nice to look around the compound and such." She hadn't left her house...and though she had been told she could stay here, she didn't think she could. She loved her home and she had other charges to look after as well.

Baniru
What a funny boy, she thought with a snicker, Very cute, though. I bet he hears that often.

Snapping out of her line of thought, she plunged into the current question while Ari had just finished talking about her own story.

"Ah, you rarely go places?" Baniru said with a hint of sadness, shifting and looking the other woman over, "Perhaps someday you can travel around with me. I have a home, but I rarely stay in it for long... it's much more fun experiencing things that are new! Though I do think this adoption will force me to settle down for a bit."

She smiled, then turned back to Dacian with a wink.

"What about you, do you ever go traveling?"

Aletea
Dacian couldn't resist the chuckle that escaped at the comment about travelling. They had already traveled from another world, so he supposed they could be considered well-traveled...

"Well, I think the peak of travelling was when we first came here. But since then, I haven't been travelling very much, except when it's to take Ismet places."

Which he did quite a bit of, since Ahneta usually was busy with whatever she did, and Hadrien didn't care much for going out. Though he would run out to do some quick shopping for Ismet, which the child seemed to prefer for some strange reason. Dacian certainly didn't understand it; who wouldn't enjoy shopping with him? So what if he took a few hours for a few items?

"Ahneta travels."

Tha was about the extent that Ismet participated in this conversation, his arms folded across his chest.

Ary Keeyara
"Well, I suppose I'm just so busy it's hard to find time to take long trips," Ari said with a sheepish smile. She did take small visitis to see Nicki...but he didn't live too far and the place was very familiar. That didn't really count, did it? At Baniru's offer she seemed rather flattered, "Oh! Why thank you, that sounds nice. Perhaps I could someday."

And she couldn't help but laugh a little at Decian, "Yes, I think you've all outdone us on the traveling bit."

Baniru
Baniru internally slapped herself. Right, right! Of course Dacian had traveled... far more than they had, in fact.

"That's right... eheh," she rubbed the back of her neck awkwardly, "Ahneta? Is Ahneta another mage companion of yours, Dacian?"

She turned to Ari for a moment, before pretending to lean on her shoulder. Baniru felt very comfortable around these people, which, for her, was a first.

Aletea
"Yes - Ahneta and Hadrian are the ones I work with."

That statement from Dacian was followed by a murmur 'oh' from Ismet. The little boy had just remembered something, it seemed.

"Dacian, Hadrian said to find you and one of the guardians.." he trailed off for a moment, before rembering "I think 'Arianna'. That Soul is about to grow, apparently, and he figured you two might want to be there."

Ary Keeyara
Ari didn't seem to mind at all at Baniru's signs of warming up to her. As for leaning on her shoulder, many of her friends had taken a habit of that before. She didn't complain about it and was usually the shortest of any group so it was comfortable, she guessed.

As she listened to Dacian, she thought the comment in its meaning was a little stiff, even if his nature was far from it. She wondered if he and the other two mages were friends. She hoped so. It was always a little awkward working around someone that you weren't at least on good terms with.

She blinked at Ismet as he said her name, looking rather surprised. She felt a wave of excitement move through her body, "O-oh! Really?"

Baniru
Bani shrugged, grinning, "Wow, already a soul is being born... and it's yours! That's pretty exciting."

The woman bowed a little to them both, a nervous habit, before winking.

"Guess I should go so you two can go up and take a look see, eh? I'd think it rude to have a stranger coming in on the birth of a child... in any shape or form."

Looking off to the side, she stretched and gave a yawn, before continuing, "It was nice meeting you both, Dacian- and Ari."

Baniru began her stroll off towards other parts of the garden, and eventually the rest of the compound. She gave a slight wave with her back turned to the two adults, before calling out, "I hope we meet again, sometime!"

... End ...

Moving In . . . 1

It had been quite awhile since Baniru had been to anything like a compound. Sure, she'd seen Dacian that one time while taking a look around, but she hadn't quite seen the insides of the room that had been graciously given.

Osha was held in one arm precariously, reaching at anything new that they passed down hallways and corners. He burbled pleasantly, unused to speech yet.
The boy preffered making sounds to signal what he wanted or how he was feeling in relation to others, Bani noted, turning another corner. A low pitched whine, for example, meant that he wanted something or other.

"Oh miho," Baniru grinned, rolling her eyes, "you'd reach for the rainbow if you could."

Osha raised a tiny brow at his mother, looking towards her with one of his famous glass stares. He was just noticing that he saw the world in tints of color as they swirled across his eyes- a streak of green had just flitted across his vision, dousing his mom in shades of lime.

"And exactly what you looking at?" the woman said playfully, poking the toddler softly in the nose. They had stopped in front of a door with a big paint splotch on the knob; how it got there was anyone's guess.

Osha smiled back, completely unaware of the situation.

Baniru juggled the toddler in one arm while she opened the door with the other, checking a slip of paper clutched in one hand.
"Well, we're here," she whispered to the boy, "So why don't you take a look around?"

She put down the child who immediately clung to her knee, wide eyed. Everything was suddenly so... big.
----------~----------

What was inside was not what one was expecting. It was a large place, but not overly so; and just as any empty house, it was... empty. There was a forlorn table in the corner, and the walls looked unpainted- but that seemed perfect, considering what the first thing she wanted to do was paint the place.
The kitchen had little more to offer. A few cupboards suspended over a small island, with a working stove and microwave to the left. These things seemed to reside next to a large white refrigerator, which had a complimentary bag of something-or-other ontop.

Bani didn't want to even go there. They were probably stale.

Looking farther, the woman found there was no dishwasher, but that was fine. It wouldn't kill to manual wash- besides, kids needed to do those kinds of chores, the sphinx reasoned. Built character.

Baniru began to chew her bottom lip, examining the bedroom with Osha still clung like a leech to her leg. As plain as it would seem to any middle class family, and scant to any rich one, this was heavenville to the woman who lived travelling from motel to motel.

"Well, look at this miho," she grabbed one of the toddler's hands as they entered the single bedroom, prying him off her pants, "Look how big it is! And it's all yours, right?"

Osha just kind of stood, strung out from the safety of hiding behind his mother's legs, confused and yet curious at the immensity of this room. It wasn't any bigger than your average, yet to the toddler it was gigantic.

"You're going to love it here," she whispered, smiling in a reassuring manner.
"Come here, and we'll go get something to eat, okay?"

Osha looked ready to cry. But his mother's voice sounded so calm and absolute... it was comforting.
The boy toddled over and buried himself in his mother's arms, before being picked up.

She never said anything about herself staying.

Moving In . . . 2

Osha prodded his Happy Meal with a cautious finger, curious as to what was exactly inside the bag that had 'M's' all over the cover.
He wanted to scribble on the bag too!
Or at least, something told him he wanted to scribble. He wasn't even quite sure of what a scribble was, regardless.

"Miho," Baniru said softly, lifting the boy up to put him in a seat beside her in the booth, "Try not to make a mess, alright?"

At hearing his pet name, Osha snapped his head in an almost comical manner to his mother. He couldn't exactly understand full sentences yet, but he did get that she wanted him to be careful.
The toddler looked at his happy meal again.

Maybe it wasn't so happy.

The sphinx couldn't help but laugh as she prodded him in the stomach, which amassed a large amount of giggles.
"You look so serious, like your food is a bomb."

Osha batted at his mom's hand playfully, but grew solemn at the sight of his Happy Meal. Didn't she know? Had she no clue?! It was... THE meal. The one where they didn't put happy in it.
Look at it... so conniving and evil. The wonderful smell that made his tummy gurgle was only a decietful lie!
The meal just kind of sat there, not moving, not saying anything.
It was STARING AT HIM.
"Mmma." he said in a frightened manner, smacking the Happy Meal bag like he was the head pimp.

Bani laughed again, catching one of his pudy fists in her own, grinning.
This kid was going to be a nerd when he grew up. A handsome nerd.

"Are you hitting your food?" the woman coo'ed, deciding it was better to open the bag for him and arrange his meal, "Here, see? Very yummy, yum yum."
She placed the burger and some fries for Osha to easily grab, before she slowly took a french fry and nibbled at the end herself. The woman was making exaggerated chewing motions.
Gulp.
Bani then rubbed her tummy in circles, making a weird sort of smile.
"Yum, food."

Osha just stared at the spectacle with a dainty brow raised, his mouth in the shape of a perfect "o".
God, his mom was weird.

Bani decided to use another method, a more direct one. She simply took Osha's hand, opened his palm, and stuck a french fry in.
"Eat," she said softly.

Not quite understanding, but feeling that the right thing to do was to stuff the 'eat' in his mouth, the toddler obliged. And then he didn't need to think about it, because his body took over from there.
Mm, what the heck was this thing?! Oh gosh oh gosh it was so good oh gosh-

"Yum!" he chirped out happily, grabbing another fry, "Yum! Yum! Yum! Yum!"

Baniru nearly teared up on the spot. Her little boy had said his first word.
Not to mention this was his first meal, ever. The sphinx watched as the boy gobbled down his fries, and then puzzled the intricate cryptology of the hamburger, before simply eating it in layers.
Hm, they might need to work on that.

When he was all done, Osha grabbed his mom's sprite and sucked that down too.
Okay, now the woman was a little wary. She began to think her toddler had a hollow leg, or some such.
Maybe he was really mixed with a black hole, and not a paintbrush.

She shook off a chuckle, looking down fondly upon the boy who seemed so suddenly full of energy. Food does that to the little imps- it gives them the energy of a 1000 volt taser.

"Are you done, miho?"

Osha nodded eagerly, patting his stomach in a content way. Oh, this place was heaven... he never wanted to leave.

"Let's go home then, hm?"

Damn.

Moving In . . . Finale

The door on the third floor of the gardens compound creaked open in a sort of wary reprise, leaning it's trudges to the unsettled dust fluttering about the air. It was eerily silent on this floor, and rightfully so- no one had honestly moved in, up or down yet...

It was seemingly the smell of an indigo carapace; the wind fluttered, but it was outside, the walls groaned, but there was no echo... things in this particular floor of the compound felt too alive to really be called a 'living space'. And up, up, up they had come, until the stairs gave part to a metal door with a large frame of 'C' bolted overhead.

The hallway was completely empty, sunlight flooding through the windows that peeked out over the happy fauna outside. The floor was wood, suprisingly, and creaked as one walked on it.
As if it had been used for ages past, when no age had existed at all.

Baniru sighed, jiggling the key to the front door in the lock again. They were antique looking- tarnished, as one might call it- with a keyhole so old that one could look through it to the room behind the door...
and that should describe all the looks of what they key might own.

Osha was clinging to his mother's hair, his short little legs draped lightly on her shoulders. He hadn't ever had a piggy back ride before, and rightfully so.

"The place is pretty empty," Baniru admitted quietly, pushing open the door with fleeting triumph, "There's only the necessities here- it seems that we'll have to go out and buy you some real furtniture, miho."

Osha nodded his head in a comical manner, not really sure of what his mother was saying. But then again, did it ever really matter? He dug his pudgy fingers into the strands of Bani's hair, taking in the feel and smell.

He loved his mother. There was never a moment that passed that the boy didn't flourish in her glow, or sing silently with her voice. She spoke in bells, created from the gentlest poppurri...
There was a sinking feeling in the bottom of his stomach, yet. Something didn't feel quite right; like when you know someone is going to leave, and it's going to be that way for good. He didn't like the feeling much. It was ominous, and unsettling.

A few moments later, and Baniru had slowly taken Osha off her shoulders and laid him upon the bed, the light in her dark eyes flickering. Her smile faultered.
Well... what to do now?

The woman softly sat beside the toddler, the rebound making the Ames giggle and roll over with glee. She spread her hands to get a feel for the sheets on the bedspread- they were dark, linen, swirls of 'ye olde' patterns strewn about. The thing itself felt scratchy and rough, nothing like it should to be comforting. And in retrospect, you wouldn't think something like this would matter- and it doesn't, really. But people spread their palms upon things to get a feel of how time should pass all the same.

"Osha," she started out dryly, and there was a tone that made the toddler fall silent. The room grew stuffy with this silence, and it wasn't long before the boy cautiously crawled over to his mother's side, confused. Was she angry at him? Was she sad? He'd never heard that kind of thing before, but it felt terrible. Like warmth sucked out of a heater, or a bell without a ring.

"Osha," Baniru started again in a much softer tone, almost sad, "I have something to tell you that... you most likely won't understand. But you need to be a big boy, and listen nonetheless."

The toddler shuddered, but didn't turn his gaze away from his mother, even when an ivory plume shot straight through. Though he didn't quite understand the words that the woman said, her voice told it all with the way it was currently fluttering.
This was important.

"... It's funny," Bani folded her hands in her lap while trying to stall, but with that opening line, she had coincidentally forgot what she was going to say. So instead, she said what she meant straight out.

"I have to leave, Osha."

The boy looked up at her suspiciously, noticing that shadows and dour wrinkles suddenly plagued his mother's features. She looked old then, stress reaching it's peak and overflowing with the slightest of gestures.
What was she talking about? What did she mean?
Leave? Leave?

"Huh?" was Osha's only response.

Bani sadly patted the toddler on the head, ruffling the layers of red and orange that feathered down his face. And even then, there was no giggle. No smile. He knew something was wrong.

"I am going bye bye," she whispered, waving a hand for example.

Instinctually, the boy knew. Osha knew immediately what that waving hand meant, like a vulture to prey. Tears were already creeping their way to the corner of his eyes.
He hated bye.
But who was going bye?

Osha quickly pointed to himself, and with toddler logic, hoped he was going instead of his mom.

Bani shook her head, before kissing the boy on the cheek.
"No, me. I'll be back, though..."

The boy looked up in absolute terror, beginning to cry immediately after.
Why did his mom have to go?
Why did his mom have to go!?
Why?
Why?
Why?
It wasn't fair! It wasn't fair!
Nothing was fair!
He didn't want her to go... !

This went on for several minutes, before the woman managed to calm Osha down enough to only render him in gentle hiccups. He looked over at her with tired, weepy eyes.

"Why?" he managed out curiously, though it was sad.

And Baniru wished she could tell him, oh wouldn't that just be wonderful! But things are much better at a compound then they are in Motel Tequila, with your illegitamite hellion of a son and a strange man with another boy living with you. Where you can barely afford to feed and clothe yourself while pushing a shopping cart down the street.
Toddlers just didn't understand the concept of money.

"Shh," Bani whispered, wiping the remaining wetness from his eyes, "Sleep now, miho. I'll be back..."
-----------~-----------

It took a full hour to get the boy to sleep on the bed, and that included back rubs, tummy rubs, and finally the woman had to take off her shirt- which Osha clung to- before the toddler quieted down to dreamland.
She had an undershirt on, thankfully, so there would be no problems walking home...

As Baniru tiptoed out of the room, she gave a rueful glance at her little boy before completely and silently closing the door behind her.

She hoped Dacian would be around to take care of him, soon.

"Mmmah?" Osha sat up from where he had been sleeping in curious silence, as if waking from a dream he never had. He yawned a bit, stretched, and then rubbed his eyes in a childish manner.

Well?

The toddler barely recalled what had happened last night, so it was a bit of a suprise when he realized that his mom wasn't there. He gingerly peeled himself out of the covers, and accidentally slipped off the side of the bed.

whumph.

The boy landed with a hard smack on the wooden floor, and couldn't help but start to cry immediately. Ow, that hurt! His arm and leg were throbbing with pain!
And soon him mom would come and make it all better!
This went on for ten minutes before Osha realized that no one was coming for him.

And what a strange thing for a small child to realize indeed- what a sort of scarring revelation- that no one was coming for them. No one was there for their wants and needs.
Contrary to popular belief, Osha was actually a very intelligent boy. Most of the time, he didn't have to be to feel comfortable. He didn't usually have to be tough, or crafty, or wise. He was taken care of properly by his doting mother, and so usually, he didn't have to fend for himself.

But that was changing, wasn't it?

Osha looked around a bit more, sniffling and wondering if perhaps his mother just hadn't heard him! He couldn't settle his mind on her just not being there. That couldn't be it, no way.

The toddler sat for a moment in stuffy sniveling, before something else dawned on him.
He hadn't had to walk yet. His mom had carried him home and to and fro, for the first few days.

The question really was: how to walk?

How to walk indeed...

One. Two...

One. Two...

Hold onto the edge, that's a way to gissy up the boy...

One. Two...
Two... three.
Two, two-twotwo-

thumpf.

Osha lay on the burban wine rug, throwing himself a silent tantrum in utter frustration. He was sprawled like a lifeless doll, hair splayed and heart beating, tears eeking themselves into the carpeting with more moments passed. This was completely impossible. There was no way he was going to manage to walk all the way across the damn living room, trying to get to wherever his momee was.
His stupid mom. Stupid, stupid, stupid! She was gone, wasn't she? Deep down, he felt the knots in his stomach. Stupid, why did she go? It was unfair! Unfair unfair unfair!

"Ufaaae..." Osha managed after several moments, beating his tiny fists on the carpet as if in ritualistic chant.
"No! No! No! No!"

This passed for many minutes, until the toddler had worn himself thin of energy. He picked himself up, staring off into nothing, staring at the rug with wide, color striken eyes.

His stupid, stupid mother.

Bitterly, Osha managed to wobble to his feet with aid of a nearby chair, legs shaking with need of rest. His bottom hurt. His palms were bruised from so many mislandings. He had even smacked himself in the face!
But such was the life of such a toddler, and Osha tried to continue on with the bare necessity of want.

His determination seemed to make all the difference.

One. Two...
One. Two...
Two... three.
Three, four fivesix... seveneightnine. Ten, ten, ten.

One. Two...
Three. Four...
One. Two...

And off Osha toddled, getting the hang of things. He cautiously toddled into the kitchen, and then slowly made his way down the hall to a room he hadn't been in before.
The door was lightly open, but when he peeked in he found nothing to be suprised at. Just some beaten walls, a rug with stains, and a tiny closet...

Well, where was his Mom? Eagerly the toddler managed to go from place to place in the house, searching the most ridiculous places such as cupboards and under-the-bed. When he had finally sat back on that burban wine rug, no results in hand, is when he remembered.

His stupid, stupid mother.

And that's when another tantrum started, and ended, unknown...

When it was all over- when every single ounce of energy had been used to it's prim capacity, Osha slumped over in a very unflattering position on the rug, and simply took a nice, long nap.
Stupid mom.
