I have to agree that a minimum post length of more than a few sentences can be a very bad thing. But then again, I've been MUCKing for about ten years now and I've seen people get told to "go to RP school" (one MUCK actually had one) because their post was fewer than three lines long. The person running the "RP school" was a 'fluffer'. One of those people who has to explain every detail of themselves in every pose. A long post isn't always bad, and not every detail is useless, but fluff is just unacceptable. If a character throws a kick at my head, knowing they're on the ball of their foot, or pivoting, could be useful for my response. Knowing that they're flowing through the streams of chi like they were taught by their master all those years ago after their village was destroyed by the Shadow People of Enam-ci'toxe for the crime of stealing the Emperor's prized chicken...

Yeah, that's just fluff. Then again, I'm not one for omniscient 3rd person if I'm a part of the action. Holdover from my days trying to learn my way around Armageddon MUD.

In books, most 3rd person limits itself quite nicely to the thoughts or knowledge of one character at a time. We should do the same. sweatdrop

I used to play Hesperia but it was too much leveling up and that bores me. Plus when I got out of the newb villiage I died instantly. xd

If there must be a limit then there should be flexibility to it; such as for fights two sentences, and for story building about three... just to keep things going. I am not that great at doing the five sentences for one fight but I do like to have information that is for how to react. There are fights that last for hours with the paragraph people, I have fought with them and found that they do put to much fluff into their so called paragraphs and only have about two sentences worth of real fight.As for being "Literate" useing proper spelling and grammer is what I have known it to mean, and unless you can prove to me that you have to write a fluff filled paragraph to do so, I will keep one lineing thank you very much.

The only posts I really have that are fluff are the first posts I do as a character and, occaisionally, my first post in a thread... 'Cause I like to say where my character has come from because it can have an impact on how they are dressed, how they are acting, etc.

I also agree that fight posts shouldn't be too long unless there is a valid reason for it... That doesn't cut down on the other person's ability to respond. But alot of one-liners just don't seem much like roleplaying to me because they usually tend to be just words and a short thing of what they are doing that doesn't say if they are near someone else in the post when doing it... Also, I've seen alot of one-liners that were reeeeeeally disjointed and didn't make alot of sense...

For me, I generally prefer for there to be a short paragraph at the least (3-4+ sentences) on average... It just makes it easier to understand what the character is doing/talking about in some instances... Though as long as it's well written, if it's short I'm perfectly alright with it... I just have a heck of a time responding to one-liners 'cause I'm afraid I'll border on god-moding if I have my character react to something unspoken... 'Cause the posts aren't just about whoever's gonna be reading it... It's about the people you're RPing with being able to have thier characters do something in response so that the RP can keep going.. Y'know?

I like that suggestion. I was thinking an RP with a min and max post limit would be interesting regardless of the content. Maybe a minimum of 10 sentences and a max of 50. A lot of people just need practice expanding or limiting their length and in my opinion that can come before worrying about perfect quality. I think this kind of stringent limit would force players to be creative while not allowing them to overrun the RP, since posts would be roughly the same length no matter what happens in them.

A simple gang set up or a tournament both have their advantages...

Posts longer than mine scare the crap out of me >.>;;

Sometimes I'm guilty of writing long posts, but when I do, I think it's in proper context. Like if it's your first post in the RP or after a long perod of time or a dramatic scene chage. Some people don't read the first page for profiles, so I like giving them a general lay out of who my charcter is. Sort of set the mood for your character, in my opinion.

But one-liners bothe me almost as much. I like to believe that there is more to say in those situations. In a fight for instnace, you could describe what effects your attack might have on the enviroment or what will happen if it connects. I think even the simpler moves, like slashing, can be upgraded to atleast 2-3 lines with a little it of effort.

I think it's reasonable to be able to post at least two sentaces that apply to the situation. But that's just me >.>;;

I know that I don't usually read all the other character profiles *laughs* so you may be right there.

Indeed. I always do, though. I'm always scared that I might mess up when my character interacts with theres. Like I get there races wrong or I mess up something in their backround or something @_@

Oh! Well THAT part I read, actually. Or I go back and read it when my character and theirs interact. Often a lot of the people never interact with you or aren't posting any more. However sometimes it is necessary to read some about the characters in order to make up your own, especially if the two were supposed to have known eachother already, eh?

Indeed. I do that as well. But sometimes I get so nervous if I got everything right about them that I'll stop in the middle of my post to check the front page again ^^;;

That's not such a bad idea! I have to do that too sometimes.

Well, as you say, there are certainly times where a post that is too long is debilitating, but I prefer posts of three to five lines, mostly descriptive, because it gives other roleplayers more to work with.

It depends on the situation. If you're "literate", as everyone claims to be...then you should know when and why your post length is the way it is. RP's are about story, effort, and a good deal of give-and-take. A paragraph about nothing is a paragraph about nothing, while a sentence, too can be inappropriate. Fair and simple.

I'm really of the personal opinion that if your post isn't even three sentences long, then you could be trying harder. If you find yourself posting one-liners consistently, and you don't normally, consider getting out of that RP.

In all fairness I am certainly guilty of posts less than five sentences. Especially in AIM, where the medium encourages immediacy. Still, I would say that I was not trying hard enough in those cases.
