"Of course I have a point," he replied in a hurt tone. Of course the amused smile ruined the effect. That happened to him all to often. "I've survived this long, right? If you ain't important and you don't fight back, people leave you alone."
He didn't add that he worked hard to test that theory, working as an errand boy for crime lords and other such dangerous folk. Well, it was a living. One of the few he could hope to make, with his background. And he had never actually hurt anyone.
Well, er, not directly in any case.
He dragged his attention back to the girl. Something about her didn't seem quite normal, but that didn't bother him. Conversation was conversation, right?

Howie raised an eyebrow. Maybe that was it, this girl was far too sheltered to be considered a part of his normal peer group. "Well, yes. With more guns and knives, of course," he said in an offhand manner. This girl - Jessica? - would have to find out about the world soon enough.
A breeze went by that made him tug his vest closer to his body. He shoved his bare arms under his elbows and ignored the book that was cutting into his side from its well-hidden spot in his vest.
((I really gotta go now. Pause the rp?))

((Sure, I'll just make my post))
"Well, yeah. But the concept is sort of the same."
She said, looking warily into a particularly dark corner, half-expecting to see someone suddenly jump out at her and try to kill her. She shivered at the notion as much as she shivered because of the chill wind. She knew she would have to leave soon and come back to her house, but their little conversation was starting to awaken her to the idea that there were people out there just waiting to jump her. Now the thought of going back home in the dark sounded more and more dangerous to her. She felt stupid for many reasons, one being the fact that she had forgotten to bring one of her dogs with her. Next time she would definitely bring her husky mutt, she decided with a nod.

((Uh, okay, I'm only on for a little bit. Hope it's okay to post event though no one else is around ^^; ))
He grunted as a response. It was really quite late, and this girl wasn't a street kid. She must have a family around somewhere. So what? he mused. It was her problem, I'm not responsible. He fidgeted for another minute. On the other hand, he was quite bored and antsy.
"Perhaps I ought to walk you home, little lady. Two attract less trouble than one, after all." He grinned at her cheekily and winked.

The boy's smile faltered and his eyebrows shot up, but he got ahold of himself and quickly masked most of his surprise. The girl really didn't know much, if she was willing to let someone like him discover where she lived! Of course, he was only playing with her, but for all she knew he could be a dangerous brute.
Well, maybe not the brute part. No one would call a charmer with such a sweet face a 'brute,' now would they? Howie's smile returned with a vengance and he held out an arm. "Well then, shall we get going?"

Howie walked her down the street as if he were leading the most sought-after lady in the country. He was good like that. Of course, he was also blissfully unaware of the conflict going on in Jessica's mind, currently he was preoccupied with the smug satisfaction that he would never be as pathetic as that old geezer - digging around in a trashcan for some number.

"Huh, oh. What?" Oh, real smooth their sailor. "Er, I mean, I suppose it's quite nice so long as there's somewhere warmer you can hole up in." He shrugged casually. "My first time in this city, though. Bet it gets a lot colder." He tugged at his vest again absently.

She eyed his bare arms, looking kind of guilty. She had always had somewhere to live that was warm, and she was always welcomed there. She couldn't imagine what it was like living on the streets like that. How did such a nice dude get in a position like this? She sighed, looking gloomily into the dark.
"Your first time here, eh? I certainly cannot say the same."
She changed the subject.

"A hometown girl, huh?" He smirked. "Well, I guess it makes sense. Walking around alone in a city you know is marginally less stupid than wandering around in a strange city." He spoke the minor insult in the same sauve manner he delivered everything.
"Yeah, I move around a lot. Turns out staying in one place isn't exactly beneficial to my health, hehe." He didn't elaborate, but he gave the impression that he wasn't talking about the climate.

She narrowed her eyes at the insult, getting rather quite. she wasn't stupid! she was just... forgetful... and lulled into a false sense of security. That was all. But, deciding that this wasn't something to be too offended about, she simply shrugged and smirked. "Yeah. I know these streets by heart. But it's no excuse for going wandering alone at this hour in them."
She chuckled at his next statement, knowing exactly what he meant.
"You could be successful, you know. I bet you would make a pretty mean salesman." She said, nudging him lightly and smirking up at him.
