"Ed, and if you call me Sergeant again I'll give you a nickname so reprehensible you'll beg me like a slut to change it." It was almost like Autry threw in big words to convince others he was high-class and not merely trailer park trash from Alberta. "By the way, remind me again your plan for dealing with Dr. M?"

"I'd rather not, Sergeant," said Burgundia, who obviously was a glutton for punishment and totally not mindful of the ways of Autry, and would inevitably regret it later. "It is a very private thing close to my heart."

"What the hell do I care what you do to the guy?" railed Autry. "Kill him if you want. But I doubt Tipoff would let you get close." He paused a moment. "See, this is what I don't understand about you flying faggots. You think you can succeed in anything without knowing who you're up against, or their habits, or even their arsenal of weapons. s**t, ********, you're up the creek."

One of Burgundia's pale eyebrows twitched noticeably, but she forged on; obviously singing "We Shall Overcome" inside her tiny white head. "There are more things in heaven and earth, Sergeant, than dreamt of in your philosophy. Whatever the case, we can cause a great amount of pain."

Autry just rolled his eyes. "Don't pull that Praetorian book quoting crap on me, you little masturbating c**t. Do you want to hurt Dr. M or kill him? The way I see it, your little philosophy lacks both practicality and finesse. You've got no plan. Pray to your god all you want, he's not going to come down and smite Dr. M for you, love." With a little smirk, Autry studied Burgundia for her reaction.

"Go to hell," she snapped, cheeks white and despite everything, her feminine niceties shocked - "you chauvinistic - "

She counted to ten. It didn't help much. "Ed," Burgundia drawled, as if 'Ed' was a bad word. "For one thing, my God is not a man. For the other, my God isn't the God who would help me assassinate somebody, for She isn't here; that's something I do my own self. Please call me - 'c**t' before you call me 'love', on account of me rather bein' the former than the latter. Also, may I remind you I'm not anatomically correct, so that just puzzles me rather than pisses me off, you festerin' sack of s**t."

(White lie. She'd blanched, and how.)

"And actually, we're kinda well-known in my family for planning."

The look on Autry's face was one of pure satisfaction: a cat with a mouse trapped under its claws. It had taken him a few more tries than usual, but he had what he wanted. He was controlling the situation. "Coulda fooled me, Dee," he said, a chuckle threatening to emerge. Thankfully it never did. (The mere possibility was enough.)

Autry's face went suddenly contemplative. "You still haven't made it clear how you think you're going to be able to, A, kill M, and B, protect your precious... what were those names you gave to Silva? Ruby, Marne, and little Galatea, right?"
PostPosted: Tue Apr 25, 2006 9:11 pm

"Galatea's under the protection of Captain Rabik," Burgundia said calmly, though her knuckles were threatening to go white again. "And as for the other two, you'll never meet 'em; thank God. And of course I haven't made it clear; why would I tell you?"

"Because," said Autry, turning the word into a whine. Because he wanted a promotion, that's why, but the reason he gave Burgundia was: "If you don't tell me I'll have to bring you in for conspiracy, and now that we're such good friends I don't want to have to do that. And you don't want me to have to do that, do you?"

He made sure there was enough of a hint of danger to keep her on edge. Far be it for him to pull Burgundia back from whatever brink of sanity she was tottering on, not while it could be used to his advantage.

"You can't even prove we had this god-damned conversation," the adult feien said. Nonetheless, she had nearly broken out in a sweat: flight or fight instinct, reminding herself over and over that they were going to her bond. Autry could tell her nervousness; her accent got even worse. "Why, bring me in all you want; damned if you can do anything, on account of Rose havin' diplomatic immunity."

Autry reached up by his ear. "Auditory broadcast," he said, and suddenly there was a burst of static in the air. "Playback from twenty seconds ago."

"--versation. Why, bring me in all you want; damned if you can do anything, on account of Rose havin' diplo--"

"Cut signal." The silence was abrupt and profound. Autry lowered his hand. "Of course, no one besides you and me needs to hear that..."

At this, Burgundia wholly lost it. She flew around to Autry's face, and slapped him as hard as she possibly could across the cheek; about an inch of ice frosted up over his cheekbone, which would have been more alarming if he hadn't been a fully-grown human. She also kneed him as hard as she possibly could in the nose, and then scrabbled for his eyes, shrieking obscenities.

Autry waved his hands around his face, swatting at Dee. "Wha-- hey-- stop-- shoo!" He managed to catch Burgundia with one of his waves and knock her away.

The action sent Burgundia spinning through the air, tumbling over and over herself; she looked entirely shaken and possibly jarred in a number of places, considering limp fingers and toes and a hanging wrist, but with another shrill bleat that contained overuse of the word '********' she charged back again.

Without any time to plan or react, Autry just did the first thing in his training: raised his shield. (Luckily for Burgundia, Security officers were always taught to defend and secure first. Had Autry been in any other combat division, he probably would have drawn a weapon instead.) The familiar cushion of air surrounded him as the invisible barrier came up, creating an energy dead-zone a few inches from his skin.
