Err, yeah. Doesn't he have to be Japanese? What with being born and raised in Ryuukyuu and all? sweatdrop I mean, he's tan, but that just seems natural for him...if he was Latino, by the way, how do you suspect he'd be able to learn Japanese, when he's not even literate? ninja Sounds fishy to meh.
Then again...*shrugs*...we don't know squat about his parents. They could be from anywhere. That's more of a plausible question than I thought...I bet the prison was full of all kinds of folks.

Mugen is japanese, but he's dirty all the time, and he's lived his life in the sun giving him a darker color!

It doesn't really matter to me, although I'm sure you're not the only one who's had that thought wander into their mind, especially because of the hip-hop influence. XD
Most likely he is just "tan." Samurai Champloo is based in a specific point in time--Edo period Japan. I don't think Mugen would be a black or white character; I think he's Japanese, like most of the other characters. If he were black or white, he'd have slightly different "adventures," don't you think?? Being black or white, he'd stick out for more reasons than simply because of his clothing. wink

Last time I checked labeling is (i.e.) "emo, punk, prep, etc."

It's ganguro when you go tanning a lot and have dark skin, but I'm not sure if that only applies to girls.
