Not sure how I'll feel about it after repeat viewing, but I really liked it on first viewing. Strong performances by the supporting cast, and a nice twist about Prince Albert and what's-his-name's father having planned out a trap for the werewolf. I was a bit surprised the Queen actually killed the head monk so easily... I somehow expected that she'd been replaced or possessed by him off-camera, but I guess not. Once Her Majesty pulled out the diamond, I think it was pretty obvious that the Doctor was going to use the telescope as a weapon, though perhaps that might be because I watched Horror of Fang Rock recently.
I love the rapport between the 10th Doctor and Rose; I think they play off each other better than the 9th Doctor did (oh, is that the sound of outraged Eccleston fans I hear?).
Didn't mind that the events led to the formation of Torchwood, but that speech by the Queen was just cringe-worthy. Too long! I felt it would have been better to just have the Queen allude to it with a brief sentence about putting the place to good use, pan up to the Torchwood sign, and be done with it. Though, since she did say all that crap, I wonder if the idea that the Doctor is a bad alien is actually written into the Torchwood charter. You'd think she'd have more gratitude after he saved her life and all.
And the 10th Doctor saves the day for the 3rd time in a row! Looks like RTD may have heard those people that complained about how everybody but the Doctor seemed to come up with the solution in many of last year's stories.

First off, hi everyone! I'm new to the guild and have been looking ferverishly for a group where I could discuss my obsession. whee Very glad to be here and get to know you all. heart
Anyways, fantasssssstic episode. Kept my heart racing the entire time. I could blab on and on but I'll just highlight a few of my favourite bits that I jotted down while viewing:
1. Reference to the Doctor's love for The Muppet Movie. Just made me giggle hysterically that did. whee
2. The whole "We are not amused" bit. Incredibly silly yet incredibly amusing (pun completely intended).
3. The wolf saying "You have the wolf about you" to Rose. Verrrrrrry cool throwback.
4. Everything about the library scene. Their greatest arsenal is books! And I absolutely adore when Tennant puts on those glasses. Sooooooo sexy. whee
And now to just mention the one thing that made me laugh my a** off 'cause it was so awful: The Torchwood speech. Oh my dear god. We get the POINT Mr. Davies! Honestly, that was much too over-the-top and blatant. I just laughed hysterically throughout the entire speech. xd
All around great episode. Interesting story with spot-on acting. I'm with you Hairy Priest, I lovvvvvvve how Ten & Rose play off each other. I like Nine & Rose too but the connection between these two is just fantastic. <3
OH and next week preview looks SPECTACULAR. Ten as a teacher + Anthony Stewart Head + Mickey + RETURN OF SARAH JANE AND K-9!!!!!!!!
So damn excited. whee heart

Kelyn First off, hi everyone! I'm new to the guild and have been looking ferverishly for a group where I could discuss my obsession. whee Very glad to be here and get to know you all. heart Welcome aboard! Kelyn 1. Reference to the Doctor's love for The Muppet Movie. Just made me giggle hysterically that did. whee I must've missed that. Oh, no... now I have to rewatch it again!!! gonk Kelyn 4. Everything about the library scene. Their greatest arsenal is books! And I absolutely adore when Tennant puts on those glasses. Sooooooo sexy. whee Tennant says in the commentary for this episode that he wanted the Doctor to wear the glasses all the time, but the idea was shot down by higher-ups. Hmm... what'dya think, ladies? Sexier with or without? Well, it seems that a few of us thought the Torchwood speech was a bit much, but upon reconsideration, I wonder if there's more to it than just a shameless plug for the Captain Jack spin-off series. Queen Vic seemed to imply that the institute may be antagonistic to the Doctor (an evil version of UNIT, as someone else put it). Couple that with the Doc trying to bring down Harriet Jones's government, and that's two very powerful British women that the Doctor seems to have irritated. How much longer before Torchwood decides to aim its sights on him? ((Oh, I added a poll to the thread. Have fun voting!))

Yessss the Muppet Movie reference was right at the beginning when the Doctor was saying all the things he liked about 1979...before they step out and discover they travelled 100 years too early. whee
Ooooh I haven't done my commentary watch through yet but I plan to tomorrow. Dammmmmn I wish he wore those glasses all the time. SO HAWT! *faints* xd heart
Hmmm, interesting thoughts on the Torchwood speech. I still think it was more over-the-top than it needed to be, but it's true that maybe there is greater meaning. It'd be interesting to see Torchwood be the "evil UNIT"...hmmm...I guess we'll just have to wait and see! whee
*goes and votes* xd

I need to watch it again to think about it properly. My sister spent half the episode telling me she hated me. I had called her down, but she hadn't heard, and now she's blaming me for not putting it on record. @ @
So, yeah, I loved all the jokes that people have mentioned, especially the little banter Rose and the Doctor run throughout. The way those two interract is great. xD
I wasn't so sure about the monks. In the adverts it looked like they were doing martial arts. Must have been a bit I missed, but really. x__x
Did I mention the wolf was great? "Beautiful!"
And ye-ah, it was pretty obvious the Doctor was going to use the diamond in the telescope, at least. It's like in Dalek with the water sprinklers.
...Mistletoe. <3
It's one of my favourite plants. Asterix and Obelix and a ward against epileptic attack. Never heard of it in werewolf legends? Has anyone else? Or is it, as it was mentioned, just something the monky-monky-monks co-ordinated?
And, sorry, OMGTHEGLASSES! <333
Had that reaction to the last episode too. I love reading glasses. x3;;
The next episode looks great. :3
I mean, it's got... Tony Head - is it? - in it! Woo~!
And hey there, Kelyn. ^ ^~

Or is it, as it was mentioned, just something the monky-monky-monks co-ordinated? Mistletoe, and not a hint of snogging. What's the world coming to? Never heard of it associated with werewolves or monks before, either. They do talk about it a bit in the commentary, though, including it's purported medicinal properties. One thing that was pointed out was that mistletoe isn't common in Scotland, so having so much of it in the house would be rather unusual (which may have helped clue the Doctor into its significance). I just realized: what happened to the rest of the monks outside the house? Did they just run away when the wolf died (how would they know?), or when Victoria was successfully infected (again, how would they know?), or did the guards shoot them all dead off-camera after they woke up from being drugged? And why were they keeping the werewolf in a cage? I thought they worshipped the wolf or something. The Royal Family is a bunch of werewolves. Hmm... it explains so much, doesn't it?

Heheh I noticed that little continuity slip too...plus the fact that The Host (where have I seen him before? I swear I recognised the actor) sacrificed himself to 'buy them time' though the wolf seemed to pretty much just go through both him and then the door in under five seconds O.o And I think the mistletoe thing might have been inspired by the species of plant Aconitum, which is the more traditional 'wolfbane' herb...though it does look a lil' like misteltoe. I guess they just wanted to put their own spin on it. But the doctor and Rose's chemistry? Seriously? Really starting to irritate me, actually. They're like a pair of giggling schoolgirls. I hope Mickey bitches them out next week. Plus she made him gamble D: Bad Rose, stop corrupting the incorruptible.

Vanille Chocolat And, sorry, OMGTHEGLASSES! <333 Yay I'm not the only one! whee heart
And yeahhhhh the whole lack of monks at the end IS extremely bizarre. Regardless of what answers we come up with to possibly explain that, I feel like it must have been an oversight on the part of Davies. Maybe they originally had a scene that explained what happened with the monks but they had to cut it due to time limitations? Odd though because it really does leave weird loose ends.
Haha, and Jettrick, I personally love the Ten/Rose chemistry but nonetheless I also hope for Mickey bitching them out. Ooooooooh how I love Mickey. <33

(Yeah, I watch that.) If you mean sir Robert, well then he did buy them time, but Captain Reynolds sacrificd himself to buy them time and he held the werewolf off, but in the time they spent chatting about it and the time Rose stood just stupidly staring, they could have all got into the room and barricaded the doors. So yeah Rose is a stupid cow... but I just think that anyway rolleyes

Why didn't I think of that? @.@ We~ell, it was mentioned that the monks could be using the mistletoe as a way of controlling the werewolf. Now, I'm more familiar with the JK Rowling werewolves - 'causethey'retheonlyonesI'veeverreadabout - but, since it comes from another planet, it could be that it's dangerous all the time? Worshipped, but handled with care, 'cause it might turn round and bite. :3 As for the monks... there wasn't enough time in the episode for them as well as everything else? xD They could have cut down the queen's speech. >: Buuut ah well~ @Jettick - has some pretty interesting stuff. Thanks for pointing it out. I didn't know the other name... xD ...I think it would have made better sense to use wolfsbane, actually. o O Hum. But monks. Monks are kind of like druids. They all wear robes...

all in all a good episode but it didn't seem like a doctor who episode what with the slow motion fights, monks with guns and evil queens. Plus I think there where to many refrences to torchwood. But it was still very scary and very good.
