Butterfly

She came upon the crude, childlike drawing and looked to the paste in her hands. For once, she cast aside all her inhibitions and ponderings and the thoughts of cruelties she knew existed in the world; she did not even think at all.

Her left pointerfinger moved almost of it's own accord towards the berries and dirt. She scooped at the paste, watching as her finger made an indent in the mush.

A cold breeze rushed by her, the gentle force of it taking her dress and hair slightly towards the deeper end of the cave.

Her finger moved towards a spot a little left of the cave wall. Almost as though this movement was a cue, her thoughts rushed back in a swarm. They fought for top position, fought to be recognized and so carried through into actions.

One little thought shown brighter than the rest, although it needed not to fight for it's position. It was simply there, as it had been all along, amidst the chaos that was her mind. Now covered, now not. Hidden, and revealed.

Her finger touched the uneven wall.

A flurry of movement followed. A line, a curve. Vertical. Horizontal. Straight. An angle. Lines, curves, vertical, lines, a dot, curve, dot, line, horizontal, line, curve, curve, line, verticaldotcurveswirllinecirclelinedot...

Her finger fell to her side. The paste itself had all been transfered to the wall. Her finger was stained red. Her breath came in steady panting gasps. Her mouth opened just a crack, her hair falling over her eyes. She made no move to brush it away, but she looked up... up at her painting. Her drawing. Her creation.

The crude horse now had a companion... a small butterfly, it's wings unfolding and the cacoon in which it had once made it's home laying discarded on it's side.

A second breeze blew... her dress and hair now flittered towards the opening of the cave, towards the light.

A New Light

Adrienne cast a glance over at her shoulder, the painting of the horse and the butterfly barely visible. She looked at it for a long moment, gaining courage from the meaning behind both paintings. She turned forward, and straightened her back, her head raised high. Her feet moved forward, slowly at first but gaining momentum.

Adrienne walked from the darkness of her cave into the light of the sun.

---

She squinted, holding one delicate hand over her sensitive eyes. She blinked rapidly as her pupils adjusted to the barrage of light it had not seen in a long while.

The wind was stronger out here. She blinked once and looked around; the shrubbery looked somewhat less futile as it reached towards the sun, the flowers less gaudy, the trees less desolate. She appriciated the beauty around her as something more than a passing grace, for once in her young life.

A small butterfly fluttered about, landing on a flower or two as it went. It circled Adrienne three times, coming ever closer as it did so, and then started circling higher and higher until it was out of her exceptional sight.

Adrienne watched as it went, her heart soaring with it.

Aww, Nuts!

Adrienne strode through the forest, her footsteps light with the natural grace of her people. Her hand brushed a low-hanging tree branch, the fingers curling slightly to embrace the rough texture. Her eyes held a soft light, one that had never before graced those golden orbs.

A high-pitched squeak came from her left, at about eye level. She paused mid-step, her head turning towards the source of the sound. It was an odd little brown creature, furry and possessing a bushy tail, beady little eyes fixated on her own. One small paw was lifted, and it bounced about as it chattered. Adrienne felt a flicker of recognition...

Scolding.

This thing was scolding her.

A part of her wanted to shrink away, to beg forgiveness with tears shining in her eyes, to let the wind move her white mane and bloodred dress about in a becoming fashon as she pleaded... but the other part, the darker part that had held her captive for so long, wanted to yell right back.

The animal had lept from the tree, and was now inspecting her feet in a frantic fashion. A realization came to her with a shock: underneath her large toe lay a small nut, a brown crown around it's head... the thing was pawing at her toe, trying to uncover the nut.

She removed her foot. The animal reached out and snatched the nut in it's fuzzy paws, holding it to it's chest before clambering up the tree in a sort of hopping gait. Adrienne's foot was still poised, hovering above the air, as she stared at the retreating animal without really seeing it.

Was this how it was going to be? Would she only get in the way of these earthly creatures, her tainted soul reaching out and trying to drag others down to the hopeless pits of despair, no beautiful life able to sustain itself for her presence was what made it wither and die?

The little voice inside her that was growing ever stronger murmured softly... "One nut shall make you flee back into your little hole?"

Adrienne steeled herself and continued walking, moving towards the little home in the center of the forest that she knew held her salvation.
