Where's Blood? Eamane blew an annoying piece of hair out of her eyes as she rummaged around in her purse for the key Blood had given her when she'd moved in. The porch around the elf's feet was littered with pieces of mismatched luggage attesting to the length of time she had been absent. Her moving into the little cabin with Blood and her adopted daughter had been out of convienence, a fixed address and somewhere to keep the things not needed on her travels.
Shayna's head jerked up when she heard a key in the front door's lock. She brushed tears angrily out of her eyes and snapped her dark covered diary closed as she tried to arrange her hair and clothing into some semblance of order. Taking a deep breath the Herald strode into the foyer ready to give her gaurdian a piece of her mind.
Eamane pushed the door open and attempted to gather her all of her bags. Spotting Shayna the elf grinned, "Hello! Want to help me with this stuff...there's presents in here somewhere I'm sure." She didn't notice the crestfallen expression on Shayna's face or the girls wooden motions as she moved to pick up bags. Eamane continued her good natured chatter as she entered the house. "You should have heard these new guys Shay, they were amazing..." Her words trailed off as she stared at the living room uncomprehendingly. The house was a mess! Charred furniture, clothes strewn everywhere and some shards of broken china spoke of some sort of tantrum...or hurricane, the elf couldn't be sure of which. Craning to look over her shoulder at Shayna, "Where's Blood?" Her friend wouldn't have let things get like this!
Shayna kept her eyes locked on the floor as she followed her adoptive aunt trying to hold back tears. She shrugged in response to Eamane's question refusing to meet the elf's eyes.

Moving Day Stage: Teen"Shay?" Eamane poked her head into the small room that the young Herald called her own. She smiled sadly at the jumble of boxes, clothes and general stuff the teen had strewn around her room. Apparently the hurricane had been Shayna after all. "Almost done packing? The truck should be here soon."
Shayna looked over her shoulder at the little elf. She held a rather tattered orange dragon in her hands. "Yeah..." her voice trailed off as she looked around the messy space, "...sort of." SHe sighed and gently placed the stuffed toy in an almost full box.
Eamane nodded, "Alright." She paused, Shayna had already spurned her offers of help. She looked about sort of helplessly trying to come up with an excuse to linger. Her eyes lingered on the plush Shayna had been holding. "That's the one I gave you isn't it?"
Shayna blinked and glanced at the plush again. "Yeah." She didn't say anything else. There wasn't anything to say. She was tired of trying to be happy, putting a cheerful face on for her aunt.

A New HomeStage: Teen
Shayna glanced over the piles of boxes stacked in her new room. Unpacking wasn't exactly a thrilling prospect at that moment. Opening one she rummaged around until she found her diary and sat thumbing through the pages. A whistful smile hovered on her lips as she reached for a pen.
Shayna Dear Diary, It's been a long time since I opened up this book to share with you what's been going on with me. So much has happened since those care free days, of course I didn't know they were care free...that may account for it. Something along the lines of you don't know what you got till it's gone. Great now I'm even talking in music like her. Her you ask? Oh right I didn't tell you yet. My aunt Eamane...she's the one who's ruining my life. Blood went missing a few months ago, she said she'd be back in a few hours, which turned into a few days and then a few weeks. Eamane showed up finally after about 3 weeks. By that time I was about ready to give up. What was the point of staying around when it was obvious Blood had decided she didn't want me anymore. Why else would she have run away? Eamane assured me that Blood would never leave me on purpose, so then why did she make me leave the one home I could ever remember? The place Blood left me, the place she'd come back to if she ever came back for me...
Shayna paused in the act of closing her diary. She had just filled up the last page. It seemed the world was going out of its way to seperate her from her mother; first Aunt 'mane had made her leave the cabin that had been her home for most of her life to move into a small apartment in town and now the diary Blood had given her when she'd been learning to write was full. How symbolic she thought wryly, almost angrily. She sighed and untied the bracelet that was around her wrist and removed the key. She locked the little book for the last time and pushed it away as tears of self pity filled her eyes. Stupid fate, stupid elf, stupid diary, stupid new house, stupid life!
Eamane peeked into Shayna's little room and tapped lightly on the door. She held a wrapped package in her hands.
Shayna swiped a her eyes. The woman had an uncanny sense of timing. She took a deep breath and plastered a fake but bright smile on her face, "Yes?" Her eyes drifted over the package as curiousity welled up. "Finally found my present?" she asked in an overly cheerful voice.
Eamane blinked and looked down at the brown wrapping in her hand, "Oh! Well sorta..." She bit nervously on her bottom lip and held the package out.
Taking the package Shayna ripped the paper off. A red covered journal fell out into her lap. It had her name inscribed in gold across the front and came with a small lock and key. The Herald looked at her new gaurdian and again forced a smile, "Thanks...but I already have one..."
Eamane frowned slightly, "Yes but if you wrote an average of two entries a week and have had the journal for-"
Shayna sighed and cut the elf off, "alright...please don't explain it to me." She looked at the locked book on her desk and the new journal in her lap and shook her head slightly. "Thanks 'mane."
Eamane looked as though she wanted to say something else the obviously grieving teen, but Shayna turned her back cutting off all excuses for conversation. "You're welcome," she murmurred as she silently withdrew.
Shayna pretended not to hear as Eamane left. She placed her new journal beside the old one and opened it to the first page. She stared at the blank sheet for a few minutes and then closed it again. Detaching the new key she gathered both small metal pieces and carefully slid them both onto her braclet. She looked longingly out the window, she needed someone to talk to and with Blood not around there was only one other person in her life she could rely on. Standing she rumaged through still packed boxes and pulled out a light coat. Perhaps Taka would be in the sanctum...

After the halloween party Shayna found herself wandering. It wasn't that she was exactly avoiding going home, more that she didn't want the night to end. She hadn't been lying when she told Kemuri that it was the best time she'd had in a long time. And worse she was feeling a bit guilty about the whole matter. How could she be enjoying herself so soon after Bloods disappearance?
She found herself at the rock leading to the sanctum. With a little smile she sank to the ground and lay her head on the stone. She looked up at the stars and began to pick out the patterns of familiar constellations as she attempted to get her mind to behave.
She wasn't to sure how long she had been sitting there when she finally snapped out of her reverie but it definately hadn't achieved anything. She was still certain she had enjoyed herself and equally sure that it was somehow a betrayal of her grief. Shaking her head Shayna rose up and made her way back to her aunt's home.
Eamane was sitting on couch reading a book when Shayna quietly pushed he front door open. The teen blinked, "You're up late." she commented a bit surprised. Her aunt was almost always in bed by 10 'oclock unless she had to be at a concert.
Eamane snapped her book shut in an almost angry gesture. "What were you thinking staying out so late! I was worried sick." Her eyes blazed as she stood up and drew herself up to her full height, a geture that would have been far more impressive on a taller person.
Shayna's brow wrinkled and her eyes narrowed. "What should you care, you aren't my mother!" She felt her temper rising. How dare this woman try and act like she had any authority over her! Eamane was only looking after her because she felt obligated anyways.
The little elf seemed to deflate at Shayna's words and she felt tears well up in her eyes. She brushed them away angrily. "Maybe not," she whispered sinking back down onto the couch, "but that doesn't change the fact that I care. I lost Blood...and I don't want you to disappear too." Tears were streaming down her cheeks freely now and she didn't bother to wipe them away.
Shayna stared at her aunt looking a little confused. She hadn't realized that she wasn't the only one Blood's disappearance had effected. Seeing Eamane so dejected evaporated the Herald's anger almost immediately. She sat at the elf's feet and lay her head on Eamane's knees. "I'm sorry." she whispered. "I wasn't thinking." She paused, "and... I'm sorry... that I've been so... selfish lately." Her words were halting.
Eamane looked down and placed a hand on Shayna's head. "No, I'm sorry. You're getting to be an adult, I guess I still see you as a little girl sometimes." Wiping her eyes she stood and pulled Shay up with her. "Now up to bed with you. You can tell me all about your evening in the morning."
Shayna couldn't help but giggled. She nodded and placed a quick kiss on Eamane's cheek before scampering up the stairs.

Eamane was walking. Not anywhere in particular persay, just getting out of the house for a little while. She used her hands to clamp her hat to her head and cursed. "Bloody wind," She decided that the next store she happened upon she was going inside till the air stopped moving completely!
Ooo, books! She could get some christmas shopping done too. She pushed the door open and stepped in out of the wind. Attempting to put her hair back in order she wandered through the shelves.
The bell sounding the opening of the door did nothing to pull her away from her book. She merely kept reading, every now and then slightly moving the jacket to take a sip of tea.
The chilly wind from outside made her shiver slightly, and she tucked her hands into the sleeves of her jacket
Abandoning her post after locking up the register, Jade left the quilt she was wrapped in and started towards a doorway behind the counter that lead to a break room, a mini kitchenet, and a washroom. A short corridor, if one could even call it that, lead out into the back of the bookstore from there as well.
Several minutes later, Jade returned with a tray and two cups on it along with tea, a pint of cream and what looked to be a salt-shaker full of sugar. "Pardon me, I didn't think it would take so long... Help yourself." Eamane looked up at the sound of a strange voice. Still carrying a few books she meant to buy she followed the sound. She poked her head from around one of the bookshelves. Seeing a woman carrying a tray of some sort of steaming drink she stepped out into full view. "hello."
Hearing a familiar voice, she stopped dead on the words in her book, the words starting to jumble and mix in her head. She was frozen. Blood couldn't so much as move a muscle. She knew that voice and she knew exactly who it belonged to. Problem was, she couldn't bear to look at the girl. Maybe she was scared? Or maybe just too nervous.
Either way, she couldn't bring her self to take her eyes off the book. Maybe if she didn't move she wouldn't bring attention to herself. Maybe if she just lowered her face in her jacket more, she wouldn't be recognized. That's what she hoped. She couldn't bear to face what might come.
Oh! Good afternoon. Not that one can tell what time of day it is in this weather." Jade set down the tray on the counter in front of the young woman she'd been speaking with earlier. Looking back to Eamane she offered a smile. "I'll bring another cup then if you'd like some tea as well. It'll warm you up after being out in the cold." Eamane smiled wryly at Jade, "it's an eerie sort of day isn't it?" She stepped forward moving closer to the shop's owner hugging the books to her chest. She set them down beside the tray and nodded, "i would love one." She looked around and noticed the woman trying to hide inside her coat. The little elf squinted. They looked familiar...not really looked as she couldn't actually see their face but the essence. The way they stood or something to that effect.
"Umm, excuse me," She leaned forward and tepped the 'stranger' on the shoulder. The worse that could happen was that she could be totally wrong and make a fool of herself. She did that on a regular basis anyways.
Blood knew she couldn't pull of hiding. She just knew, but it didn't hurt trying. Her pale, red, pupiless eyes shifted slowly from the book up to the face that she knew. She didn't want to move her face out from the jacket, but she couldn't just ignore her. After all, that'd just be rude. "Yes?" Blood spoke very softly, hoping her voice wouldn't be so recognized right away.
Using her own glass instead, Jade began pouring the tea and offering a cup to each of them. "Something the matter?" The woman asked of Blood, uncertain of what had her so upset.
Eamane blinked. Definately familiar. She frowned and thought hard for a moment. An idea came to her and her eyes widened and got a fearful glint to them. No, nuh uh, couldn't be. She blinked and tried to duck under Blood's book to see her face. "Blood?" She whispered.
Uhh... I should..." Blood's heart was starting to race from being nervous. She stood up and ducked her way around 'mane. Clumsy as she is, all she ended up doing was tripping on her own feet and fell to the floor. She chuckled nervously to herself before standing herself up.
Surprised, Jade looked from Eamane to Blood. "What's the matter? What's going on?" She questioned of them both. "You seem very jumpy all of a sudden..." Jade commented to Blood.
Eamane watched the woman as if in a trance. "Blood..." She whispered again stepping closer. Suddenly coming out of it, she felt her temper rise. "Where the hell have you been?!!?!" All the emotions she'd kept hidden for so long came bubbling up. She wanted to cry and yell at the same time.
"Uhh.. .uhhh..... Well." Blood let out another nervous chuckle and backed away from Eamane, whose temper was starting to scare her. Blood didn't even know what she could possibly say to her at that moment. "Ea... I... Just calm down." She stood at her full height now. Dressed all in black as she was, she seemed to almost tower over the elf. Her face now held above the jacket neck, her face fully seen.
"Please don't fight in here!" Jade cried at once, thinking this was going to go foul soon. "I'd hate to tell you both to take it outside in this kind of weather, so please calm down and speak rationally to each other..."
Eamane barely registered Jade's words but when they did manage to leak into her brain she took a deep breath. She continued to clench and unclench her fists though. The elf took a step back not wanting to create a scene. "I'm sorry." She told Jade. "I shall try."
Turning back to Blood and trying to keep a murderous glint out of her eyes she spoke in a deceptively mild tone. "alright then...where have you been? Shayna-" Eamane's eyes went wide again. Shayna...what would she tell Shayna? Oh this was not good.
"I've been.... around...." Blood paused for a moment. "... How is she?" She knew 'mane would have some time trying to tell Shayna about this. Blood wanted to see her, but she was scared too. The teen wouldn't take it so well, she though. She hadn't seen the girl in.... god knows how long. It's been a while since she disappeared without a word.
Eamane sighed and her anger seemed to evaporate at quickly as it had risen. She was bad at holding grudges longer than a few minutes. She was suddenly tired and leaned against the table where the tea was still sitting. "Around." She repeated in a resigned voice and shook her head. "She's doing better," she told Blood in response to her question, "but only recently. I found her alone at the house when I got back from a tour. It's a bit of a mess and we didn't get a chance to clean up before we moved." She felt herself get teary eyed again. "Why did you leave?"
"I.... I dunno. I just had to. It was strange." She sighed, relieved that Eamane wasn't going to try to rip her face off. "God. I wanted to come back so bad. I want to see her. You have no idea how bad I miss her." Bloods sad eyes looked even sadder yet as she thought about it.
Eamane nodded. She hadn't really been angry, well maybe a little, but it was more that she had been hurt by her friends disappearance. She nodded and pursed her lips. "I'm sure she wants to see you too. I can't promise she wont try and hit though." she added almost as an after thought. "That is if I can figure out how to explain this at all." the look in Blood's eyes almost broke her heart and resolved her determination to make sure she saw Shayna.
Blood laughed at this. "I wouldn't expect anything different from her. In fact. I look forward to the bruising." Blood smiled at Eamane, glad that her girl was in good hands. If there was anyone in the world, Eamane was the only one she'd be able to trust to take care of Shayna. And at lease Shayna already knew Eamane. It would have been heartbreaking if the girl ended up in a home where she knew no one. It'd be hard for a teenager to adapt to that.
Eamane had to laugh to as she pulled a pen and paper out of her bag. "Alright. I'll give you the address to the house. I should probably tell Shayna you're coming before you just show up at the door step. Flamable things you understand." She grinned and wrote her address on the scrap and handed to Blood. "You're welcome to stay with us as long as you want to as well. I don't think you're going to like what you see if you haven't been home yet." She blushed
Blood was almost scared to take the address from Eamane. She wasn't sure if she'd be able to make it to the house without chickening out and running off again. She knew it'd be a stupid idea to do it, but she couldn't help but have the idea run through a tiny corner of her mind. "Thanks 'mane." Blood smiled to her friend and let out a small laugh. She forgot how tiny the elf seemed. Especially when Blood herself was wearing massive boots.
If she did run off before talking to Shay, Eamane might have to track her down and drag her back again. Her friend was important to her but so was Shay's fragile emotional state. If she told the herald her mother was coming to visit she had better well visit! She smiled up at her friend and nodded. "ok, tomorrow then?" she asked.
"Absolutely. I'll be there. I promise." Blood smiled and looked at her watch. "I must run too. I've got some things to take care of around town." She hugged her tiny friend, slipped on her gloves, and headed to the door area to put her book back where she had found it.

As soon as Eamane left the book store she returned to a dazed state. In the heat of the moment it seemed perfectly rational to have Blood come and visit Shayna but now the task of talking to her niece was a daunting one. "I don't know if I can do this." she muttered under her breath as she hurried home.
"Shay?" The little elf pushed the door open and hurriedly hid the packages she had bought on her outing. "Are you around?...we need...to...talk" She wandered into the living room to find her young charge watching a movie.
"Sure 'mane." The herald reached over and using the remote turned the tv off. Curling her legs underneath her body and leaving room for her aunt on the couch she looked up at Eamane expectantly. "Whatcha wanna talk about." Her voice was bright and cheerful, apparently she had decided to stop moping.
Eamane settled herself awkwardly on the sofa and cleared her throat a couple of times. "So..ah...I ah was at the bookstore today buying christmas presents." Oh good opener. She mental mocked herself.
"OO, whatcha buy me?" Shayna asked with an expectant grin on her face. "You found my list then i guess" She hadn't made it hard for her aunt, leaving the sheet of paper on top of her desk.
"I can't tell you" she scolded, "besides that just the begining of the story." She shifted positions, pulling her knees up to her chest and resting her chin on them. "This isn't an easy story to tell Shay...I'm not even to sure it's a happy story." She paused and stared at the cushion directly at her feet. "Anyways, I was browsing the shelves when I heard the owner of the shop speaking to someone. I went to investigate and it turned out to be an old friend."
Shayna laughed and stuck her tongue out "Fine, I'll listen." She got prgressively quieter as Eamane continued her story, both wanting to know what happened and dreading it at the same time. "Old friend?" She asked a bit confused
Eamane nodded, "It was Blood Shay, and she's coming over to visit tomorrow. Ok good night, I'm going to bed" She got up and ran out of the room.
Shay sat dumbfounded for a few seconds. It seemed like some sort of cruel joke, but who would be that malicious? Then the only other possible option was that Eamane was telling the truth. These thoughts rushed through her mind in a matter of seconds and then suprisingly she began to cry. This meant that Blood was alive...alive and well and obviously not looking for her. Eamane had probably guilted her into visiting too.
Eamane hadn't really gone to bed of course. She was leaning against the wall just outside of the living room. She expected an outburst of some sort and was on hand with a fire extinguisher and everything. But when she heard Shayna's first broken sob she dropped the large device and crept back into the room. "Shay...I'm sorry. I wasn't to sure whether or not to tell you until she asked if she could see you. She seemed so sad I couldn't say no." She wrapped her arms around the teen and pulled her close.
Shayna resisted for a moment and then collapsed against her aunt. After her first storm of weeping was over she raised her head and wiped her eyes off with the back of her hand. "She wanted to see me? You didn't make her?"
"No, of course not. You can ask her anything you want to in the morning. But until then it's definately bed time. Come on I'll tuck you in" She pulled the taller girl to her feet and started to walk towards the stairs.
"Thanks 'mane" Shayna whispered after her aunt had pulled the covers up and kissed her forehead. Her voice was already drowsy having tired herself out by crying.
Eamane smiled and nodded "No problem kid." She smoothed back the herald's hair and got up to leave. On her way out she spotted the much bedraggled orange dragon sitting on the desk chair. She picked it up and giving it one hug placed it beside Shayna on the bed. "good night" she whispered and then withdrew from the girls room.

Looking at the small crumpled up paper in her hand, Blood checked three times to make sure she had the right place. Showing up at random in the attire she wore sometimes scared people. She was tall and seemed to look threatening to people who didn't know her. Blood didn't mind though. They didn't bother her, so she could usually just mind her own business.
Despite how nervous she was, Blood was in a pretty uppy mood. She figured she mine as well make the best of her day. She wasn't sure how Shayna would react, so she had best go in with a smile on her face and her pride down her throat.
Walking up to the door, Blood hesitated before ringing the bell. She knew she'd have to face this eventually. And now was a better time then ever...

After waking up Shayna had poured her thoughts into her diary and the more she wrote the angrier she became. The woman had left her by herself in a house outside of town. What if something had happened to her? Who knows what may have happened if Eamane hadn't come home. She could have died. And now she found out the Blood was alive and doing well enough to go shopping, but apparently not well enough to try and find her own daughter. Maybe Shayna didn't want to see her anyways!
That thought vanished as soon as the door bell rang. The teen sprang up frm her desk and practically flew to throw open the door. "Blood!" She stood awkwardly after her outburst.

The door bursting open make Blood jump a little. The sight of fiery red hair, made thoughts rush back all at once. She stood there for a moment. An awkward silence between them crept up. Her eyes started to water and she dove into a hug with the teen. She didn't care whether or not she hugged her back. She just needed to hold her. "Shayna..." She whispered softly in the girls ear.

Shayna resisted the hug for a moment not wanting to let herself feel again, not wanting to be drawn in and then thrown away again. But it was so comforting! Her resolve melted and she felt her defenses crumbling as she wrapped her arms around her mother. SHe had promised herself she wouldn't cry but a tear or two leaked out and streamed down her face.
Eamane hadn't been nearly as quick as Shayna to get to the door and she stood at one side, leaning against the doorway of her office just watching. She felt a a warm fuzzy feeling in her heart.

[ sorry this took so long 'mane. Being sick took away my computer time x__x ]
Blood grabbed Shayna lightly right below her shoulders, and pulled her back. She just need a nice good look. The girl hadn't changed much since she had left. Blood wanted to say so much at once, yet the ability to form and sort of a word escaped her. She took a deep breath hoping it would straighten her out a little and without thinking a sentence just shot out of her. "How are you?"

Shayna lifted her hand and swipped quickly at her eyes before looking at Blood again. She wanted so much to ask her what had happened, why she'd left but for some reason she couldn't find the words, she couldn't even find the motivation to lash out as Eamane had predicted. The herald slumped a little, looking defeated.
At Blood's question she shrugged, "I'm fine..." She paused and spark of her old firey temper gleamed in her eyes. "What about you, what was so important that you had to run off without telling me. Not even so much as a note or a phone call or...or..well anything!" She was practically shouting as she clenched her hands into fists.
Eamane began to relax. Things seemed to be going much better than expect. At least until the Herald began to speak. So much for the optimism.
