Ihabia You guys seem so much wiser than me. Does that just come with experience, or am I just undereducated about martial arts? Well if you hang around the forum with your thumb up your arse then you're going to go nowhere. Look at me for example, i think one of my earliest MA related posts on Gaia was if I should go take TKD. I think of myself as a martial artist. I dont choose to fight, and I do not brawl. So if I have to pick one of the three.. it'd be a martial artist.

Saajei I think of it this way Martial Artist- A person who studies traditional martial arts such as Kung Fu or Tai Chi more for self development then fighting ability Fighter- A person who does full contact sport events such as Muay Thai, MMA, NHB or Vale Tudo an such. Brawler- A streetfighter who likes to punch like a madman to see his opponent dead or getting there, kinda like "Tank" Abbot he's my definition of brawler. PSh. Inoue Vs Igor, THAT was a brawl. But Tank's style is pitfighting. lol.

Yeah but that is too loose to say. For instance I may end up fighting for someone I barely like, or feel threatened by merely getting dissed.

you know what, like Jass said... I believe these categories are too broad... Brawler is appropriate... but the others are not. Maybe you should think along the lines of something like...
Brawler Strategist stylist Unorthodox
... or something along that nature. I'm sure these are still very limiting... but I think they can be applied to many personalities.

welcoat Mirko_Filipovic PSh. Inoue Vs Igor, THAT was a brawl. But Tank's style is pitfighting. lol. whats a pitfighter? What would actually be classified as NHB, two guys, trained or otherwise, in a pit with no governing rules, rather large underground events. Obviously illegal and frowned upon, though the popularity of the UFC/Pride has rendered such things pointless I would believe.

I read somewhere that "tank" and "pitfighting" was tagged to david abbott just so he would be marketable. i will get that link.. but you can always correct me if i'm wrong..

got it: http://www.mmareview.com/mmareview-profile-tank_abbott.htm
hope that helps.
anyway, my view on the topic.
fighter is someone who engage in fighting. i will not call anyone a fighter if he/she never fought for anything. you may be a fighter without any formal training. or any training for that fact.
martial artist is someone who practice any martial art. even if he does not act like a sane person, i will still consider him if he practices what he trains for.
brawler is someone fighting without much thinking. something like when you see a kid just throwing punches in hopes of hitting something. that usually happens when he is already beaten up good or just has no idea how to fight. in actually figths, i guess this instance is when the fighter is a bit desperate and tries unorthodox ways just to gain advantage over the opponent.. things that will make you say, "he wont win that way"...
