[ Aerin pov ]

Aerin stood at the gates, playing with the hem of his skirt boredly. He was waiting for a girl, a bit of a tricksy human, at least according to her file. She was going to be a hawk! How awesometastic. His mouse ears twitched, as he kicked his platform boots against the ground.

She'd be here any second! Oh yay~ Must chillax....~

Astrid Cronhielm
Astrid approached the gates slowly, adjusting the heavy bag over her shoulder as she shuffled forward. The train ride had taken way too long, and the bags she was nearly dragging hadn't helped. What was with this place, anyway?

The shoulder bag protested loudly as she dragged it over loose gravel, the fabric sounding dangerous close to ripping open. Straining, she kept her eyes peeled. That building farther in back of the black-barred gates must be the school, anyway. It looked dark and silent from where she was.

"A lady?" she mumbled to herself. Astrid squinted, screwing up her eyes to see better. There seemed to be someone standing at the gates up ahead.

[ astra ]
Aerin's face broke into a wide smile. "Hi there!" He rushed forward, trying valiantly not to slip on the gravel, and lightly picked up her bag. Oh Eris, what did she have in there? Bricks? Monkeys? Talk about heavy!

"You must be Astrid!" he continued smiling, his voice smooth and warm. "I'm Aerin! So awesome to see you here~!"

Astrid Cronhielm
Astrid blinked, staring up at what must be the school's version of a welcoming committee. Glancing at the bag that the person heaved up, Astrid gritted her teeth and tried not to look overly concerned. Was that the bag she'd put Hob in? Or the one on her shoulder?

"Hi," Astrid got out, raising an eyebrow as she looked over 'Aerin.' For the first time in her life, she realized she wasn't completely sure this was a lady. Logic tried to tell her that only a lady would dress like that, but something seemed off.

"Uh, so," Astrid grunted, heaving up her shoulder bag into a better position again. "...I guess this is the right place, right..." Are you a lady?

She held off on saying that aloud for the moment.

[ astra ]
Aerin was slightly taken aback at the wash of emotion from the girl as he took her bag. He wasn't sure what was so important, but he was a little more gentle with it now that he knew something was in it.

"Hiya!" Aerin smiled down at the girl, and nodded. "Yup! The Asylum Academy is right through those gates." Aerin snickered lightly, and realised the emotions that now shifted to questioning, and Aerin guessed it was at least about his clothing, if not something heavier. For the time being, he shrugged, and sent out a feed tendril. "Oh hooray! You have a feed, darling!" he started walking towards the gates, and poked the codebox. "Send your new Feed ID to this box. Zero Zero Nine, hun."

Astrid Cronhielm
Astrid's tongue snuck out the corner of her mouth as she surveyed the box Aerin had pointed out. Temporarily diverting her attention from the bags as well as Aerin's clothes, she paused, and attempted to verify her code with the box. She hadn't had much practice with this kind of thing at home, so she couldn't quite figure out what was supposed to happen.

0-0-9.

[ astra ]
The gates hissed, slowly sliding open. Aerin beamed. "YES! Just like that! You're a quick learner." Aerin hurried inside. "Come on, darling! I'll show you around your new home, and you may even meet your new roommate!" He let out a giggle. He loved showing the students around, when they're still all starry eyed over the size and appearance of the academy.

Astrid Cronhielm
Astrid fairly surprised herself when the gates opened, almost thinking about their opening too much to move. Hastily she realized Aerin was moving in, so she hustled after. Hey, it worked! Wish the doors at home had been more like that...

She felt a little proud at Aerin's praise. She didn't know why -- especially when she didn't even know if Aerin was female yet or not -- but she liked it.

Astrid followed quickly to keep up with Aerin. The building ahead loomed closer, and it definitely looked intimidating. The extra security features on the outside of the gates hadn't been lost on Astrid, either. This was the right place, right? With a name like "Asylum Academy," her parents and her sister weren't trying to put her away or something, right?

"It was just some stupid books," she muttered under her breath, deciding to leave out the bit about Mrs. Finsbrook two houses down and that scrapbook of hers. Or the stuffed owl thing that guy at the end of the street had kept because his stupid grandfather had shot it and had it stuffed. There'd nearly been a riot over that. But really, it STILL wasn't all that much...

Astrid plucked up her streadily rising courage and blurted out without any warning, "Are you a girl?"

[ astra ]
Aerin grinned. "All doors in the academy will react to the feed and your ID, as well as most appliances, seats, and rooms in general. The very walls of the academy are hotwired into RA, luv! If you have the right permissions, it'll do what you want it to, within reason. If not, they'll just stay closed or inactive."

Overhearing her thoughts a little, Aerin smiles softly. "Don't worry, hon. Professor Zaucken just likes to be safe. His treasured possession, our AI, is locked in here! As for the name...It was the school's name before he took it. We've got no control over it, haha!"

When Astrid's question came, it cut through the air like a knife. Aerin turned to look at her, his wide black eyes blinking. "Nope! All male, my dear." He then just turned back to face ahead, and steps through the large heavy main doors, which had opened due to his verification. "Now, to your dorms!"

Astrid Cronhielm
Astrid listened to the flood of information while following Aerin inside. Astrid hadn't had any idea the feed could do so many things at once; there'd hadn't been much use for it at home, since a lot wasn't done electronically. Her parents hadn't even had feeds, now that she thought about it.

"Hmm," Astrid said aloud, mostly to herself, at the idea of safety being a priority here. She had a fleeting thought : I wonder if it's good enough to stop me?

After all, she'd had little problem with security in the past... But she shrugged, not caring all that much. She had no reason to go out of bounds quite yet.

Then, the answer to her question was made : Aerin...wasn't a girl.

"You're not a girl?" Astrid blinked, looking up at Aerin with something between surprise and fascination. The thought that anyone would want to wear girls' clothes ( hell, Astrid herself didn't ), let alone a guy, was something she found truly interesting. Now there had never been any guy like THAT at home! The thought caused a grin to spread across Atrid's face. "...Cool." Shocking and disturbing people was something Astrid had a soft spot in her heart for. Indeed.

[ astra ]
Aerin cast a sly eye over at Astrid. He let a small smile grace his lips, deciding to let her explore how she pleases.

Aerin laughed out loud at her response. "I've been called a freak, a sister, a darling, a f**, and a whore, but never before cool." He grinned, and stepped through the opening doors of the girl's main commons. "Thanks, sweetie..." He trailed off, and giggled. Cool. He. Was cool! How spiff.

He pointed to the number three. "Your room. Trela, your roommate (she's a nahzeetial and from what I've heard a bit huffy), should already be settled in! Just do the same thing you did with the gates, and you should be good to go, darlin~"

Astrid Cronhielm
Astrid grinned again, listening to Aerin's list of various ways people had referred to him. She herself had quite an extensive one, too. The thought of what various people had resorted to calling her in the past somehow, in a twisted kind of way, amused her. "People have called me all kinds of things before. But for each name they come up with, I can usually think of three for them. So it all evens out in the end." Well, not really. But, they have more, so that's the point.

Astrid merely nodded, feeling cheerful at having given someone that felt more like kin than staff a compliment. After all, opposites don't really attract, she reminded herself. At least with people, they didn't.

Eyeing her dorm room, Astrid smirked a bit about the information concerning her roommate. She said nothing aloud, nor thought much of it -- she'd rather see 'Trela' herself.

That reminded her of the bag Aerin was holding. Taking a quick glance at it, Astrid gave Aerin a look. She hadn't planned on actually asking, but she had decided she liked Aerin. He would probably understand.

"...Uh. I think Hod is in that bag," Astrid said, nodding at it. "Hod's my garter snake." She surprised herself by coming up short of actually asking if having him was allowed...since she knew that asking was more of a pleasantry than mandatory; she planned on keep Hod either way.

[ astra ]
Aerin laughed again. "i've never been very good at calling names. I'm better at pet names...Stri-stri." he giggled.

Aerin look surprised, but not overly so. So that's why she'd wanted him to be careful. Aerin slowly passed the bag to Astrid, and placed a pale white hand over the bag. "I still sense it, hm. Just a little stressed, no worries." Aerin smiled to himself. "I think you and Trela might get along rather well. If you like more than just garter snakes, since she's a nahzeetial."

Aerin hmmed, and put a finger to his chin. "Do you have any questions on stuff? I can answer a few before I head back to the infirmary, stri-stri~"

Astrid Cronhielm
Surprised, Astrid almost didn't know what to say to being given a 'pet' name. She had never had one, certainly not at home. She'd only ever been just called her name. Astrid. To have Aerin give her a new name that wasn't something intending to insult her was something she hadn't quite experienced before. Yet, she found it funny, and went right with it.

She smiled genuinely. "I had to slip him in there for the train ride. I knew somebody would have a fit" ( probably some fat old rich lady, she thought ) "and might get me kicked off. I found him in a drain pipe at home." She had no idea why she was telling all of this to Aerin, but somehow she just...was. "Old Man Marter wanted to hack him up, but I broke his big toe and got away with Hod." And Dad was so pissed.

Astrid thought she vaguely knew the word 'nahzeetial,' but she wasn't sure. She had heard it before, she knew, but usually it was one of those things adults at home didn't like to talk about. Which Astrid found boring as hell, really.

"I love snakes. Hod's my friend," Astrid added, slowly unzipping the top of the bag to give Hod some fresh air.

The garter snake took his time, not liking the bag, but trusting its darkness moreso than the new light. Slowly he flicked his tongue out, rapidly ( he was probably irritated by the ride ) and poked his head out.

Looking thoughtful as she let Hod inspect her arm, Astrid chewed her lip. "I don't have any important questions, probably. But...my parents and my big sister just kind of sent me here. I guess I'll have to do homework now and all." That sucks. "So we probably find out about when to start school and all of that through some papers or something?"

She blinked, slipping a letter colored like fire out of Hod's bag. Miraculously, it wasn't crumpled at all. "Or is all of that in here?" Astrid asked, tilting her head. Hod had begun to slighter carefully up her arm, inpsecting his new surroundings.

[ astra ]
"aww, a drain pipe? How sad. Snakeys are so cute, and so undervalued, except in nahzeetial culture."

He nodded, and looked sad. "Yea. Snakes get hocked up a lot, it's truuuee suckitude."

Aerin squealed softly when he saw Hod. He slowly reached out a hand, slipping feelings of warmth and comfort through his fingers.

Aerin looked up at Astrid. "Homework won't be around for a while. Classes are still being set up, students are still arriving. You get free time for a long while, and when classes DO roll around, you get to do homework in your head, stri-stri!" Aerin softly tapped a claw against her forehead. "Feeds make everything simpler."

Aerin straightened up, and continued postulating outloud. "There aren't many papers here. You'll get your classes sent to you by feed, and you can get a map from one of the staff, if you get lost or just want to explore, luv."

Astrid Cronhielm
Astrid narrowed her eyes, plainly aware that, at least where she had come from, snakes were much more likely to be stew than to be anything else. It was easy to tell that she didn't very much agree with that point of view.

Astrid was very pleased with both Hod's reaction to Aerin and vice versa. Hod appeared to like Aerin right away ( now that's weird, he's so picky, she thought to herself ), and got to know him by 'smelling' him. Hod looked like he was very interested in the new person.

"Homework in my head?" Astrid echoed, blinking. The thought was so great, she almost thanked Aerin on the spot. Homework in my head. I'll bet I can do just about anything with my head now.

The mention of a map sent a wide grin across her face. Normally, she'd have to figure out the layout on her own when it came to exploring. She'd drawn many makeshift maps herself, although she didn't need them to remember where to go. It was more for fun than anything else. But to be handed a map, that was brilliant. "I'll have to get a map. I want to look around as soon as I unpack all this stuff."

She spared a glance at the bags, being pretty sure she had no more questions; then at Hod, who looked very content and much more cheerful now. He was boldly going where no garter snake had gone before : Aerin's arm. Then, something else caught his eye, and he was off back on Astrid, going up into her hair and fairly curling half of himself on her head. "Hey you," Astrid mumbled, poking his side good-naturedly. "Watch where you're slithering."

[ astra ]
Aerin smiled secretively, and pinged Astrid with his feed, with a small yet neat map of the grounds, and everything in it. Aerin thought it was immesurably cute that Hod liked to stay in Astrid's hair.

"Medusa, are we?" he laughed, and then pointed to her dorm with his thumb. "Stri-stri, if you need anything, just send out a general beacon to me or to RA. RA can change anything in your room. You could make it look like you're actually in space, if you so pleased. You can rearrange, destroy, manipulate, burn or whatever to anything in your half of the room. There's not much RA can't willingly repair."

Aerin blinked, and then blushed profusely. "I'm so sorry sweetie, but I've gotta dash! Clerise needs me!" Aerin then, in his three inch heels and micro miniskirt with pinstripe stockings underneath, dashed off to his infirmary...

Astrid Cronhielm
Astrid watched him dash off, slowly relishing the new version of the map she'd just been sent. And the rules! She could hardly believe everything Aerin had just said to her before hurrying off down the hall. She could make her room like like space? She could burn things?

Throwing her hands up into the air and letting them drop to her sides, she shook her head, a look of pure, wild disbelief on her face. The expression twisted into a grin as she lugged her bags to the door, letting Hod use her head as a lookout.

...This was going to be so beyond cool.

[PRP - Trela & Astrid meeting]

Astrid lay in her bed, an old pair of headphones she'd taken with her from home slung loosely around her neck. Hard metal music was pouring out of them, which she moved her head to while mouthing the lyrics. In her lap was her journal; she was writing in it, completely absorbed in what she was doing. "There's a pain within ... that I can't define ... there's an empty space ... where your love used to shine --"

Will you revive from the chaos in my mind --

Awkward meeting .. very awkward.

Trela slithered into her room after having an extremely awkward meeting with a wolf-boy. She noticed the faint sound of music and looked up. Her roommate was finally here! Sweet. Half red-tailed hawk? She thought that's what RA said.

Trela knew she wouldn't be able to hear her, so she slithered to her bed and plopped down, giving a little wave.
PostPosted: Sat Apr 29, 2006 2:38 pm

Astrid looked up abruptly from her journal, and her mouth nearly fell open. What had very suddenly sat down on the end of her bed and was waving at her was, unmistakably, a person crossed with a snake. Right there. On the edge of her bed.

No...way...

Astrid sat up quickly, the headphones coming off from her around her neck as she pulled them over her head. Hod, her garter snake, who appeared to have been laying comfortably against the warmth Astrid generated, stuck his head irritably out of her shirt and slithered a bit up and around her neck.

Astrid just stared. She remember the headphones in her hand, still pumping out music, and flipped a switch on one the side to bring it to a very low volume. But she couldn't look away from the snake...person.

"Whoa," she breathed, clearly impressed. She had only heard about these in passing before, and her parents didn't like to talk about them... "You're...you're a snake person." She couldn't remember the official name.

Astrid stuck out her hand, her eyes still wide with a mixture of disbelief and awe. "Awesome," was all she could add, sounding like she wasn't completely there at the moment. A grin spread slowly across her face.

Trela laughed and smirked, 'Actually, I'm a Nahzeetial, but snake-person .. it's something I hear all the time.' Another laugh, and her gaze fell onto Hod, 'Oh wow. He's gorgeous! What's his name?'

It was then, she realized she totally just changed the subject, 'Opps! Sorry, haha. My name is Trela Keres. RA told me you were an altered-human?'
PostPosted: Sat Apr 29, 2006 3:12 pm

Nahzeetial! That was what they were called. Astrid remembered it now, from books in her parents' bookstore and hushed conversations over the table late at night. Nahzeetial. Snake people...

Blinking, then breaking into a smile again, Astrid slipped Hod out from her shirt and held him in front of Trela. "Sorry about the name-thing," she said respectfully. "I forgot the official word for it. And this is Hod, I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you changed the subject to him at all." Hod flicked out his black tongue, straightening up into the air to look Trela over. Astrid's thoughts flickered, and she hoped he wouldn't get defensive with her...

...but he didn't. He slowly stopped his swaying and became merely interested, probably sensing this other being had something akin to him, and wasn't currently a threat. Astrid held him out farther to Trela so she might take a look at him.

"My name's Astrid Cronhielm; I just got here." At hearing Trela's question, a faint smirk worked at the corner of her mouth. "Yeah, I'm an altered human." She glanced down at the feathers lining the back of her arms. She couldn't quite see her tail from there, but she was sure Trela could. As an explanation, Astrid added, "With a hawk."

Feeling quite cheerful at the meeting, Astrid made the assumption that Trela was probably going to be with her roommate. The coolness of this thought could not be expressed. I love snakes, she thought happily. What a stroke of luck she might room with a Nahzeetial. She might even learn more about them now.

Forget what her parents thought. Snakes ranked high in Astrid's book.

Trela's tongue flickered as Hod swayed. Hurting the snake was her last intention. Infact, she loved them .. being one herself, as well. Her gaze remained locked with Hod; when he stopped swaying, her tongue flickered in relief. When Astrid held him out, she smirked, gazing over his sleek body.

Listening intently to Astrid; nodding and glancing up every so often. She smirked, 'Well, I've always had a fasination with hawks. They are a snakes enemy - most of the time - but the elder was friends with a hawk .. He was the most beautiful bird I've ever laid eyes on.'

Trela laughed, and looked up, 'I take it you like snakes? Considering you own one.'
PostPosted: Sat Apr 29, 2006 3:59 pm

Astrid couldn't help the smirk that flitted across her face at the mention of hawks usually being at odds with snakes. She knew it was true, but somehow she'd always been so drawn to them, probably because of how they looked and moved -- besides the fact that a few of the people in town had the unfortunate knack for likening her to one. They just couldn't take a joke.

The mention of an 'elder' into the conversation sparked an interest in Astrid, mirrored by her eyes. "I like hawks a lot too. My father is a fan of birds, I guess. My sister is altered with a bird, like I am. Not the same kind though. I think my mother might try and get one, even though she's grown-up." I wonder what it's like to live in Trela's house. Astrid's gaze moved to Hod, and she drew him back to her and let him slip up under her shirt sleeve and poke around.

"I've liked hawks since I was little, but I like to think that I may be the only one that would rather make friends with Hod than eat him." A look of disgust crossed her face. Old Man Marter really had been about to cleave off Hod's head with a big kitchen knife. The thought angered her. If Hod hadn't been so small, she would have hoped he'd bite the guy. Except Hod has no poison to share with him...

Smiling, Astrid stroked Hod under the chin and regarded Trela again. "So I take it you're my roommate? At home, people don't really talk about Nahzeetial. I think they're afraid of them, or just don't like them. It's really boring, because I can never find anything out." She crossed her legs comfortably. "What's it like where you're from?"

'Altered with birds, eh?' Trela wondered what it would be like to be "altered" with another being .. though technically .. she was a snake-girl. So, that maybe made her an altered human? Mrrf.

Sounded like Astrid had it somewhat hard at her home ... well, maybe it only sounded that way to Trela because apparently her parents didn't like Nahzeetial ... she wondered what would happen if they found out Astrid was roomed with one.

At the mention of her home, she was both happy and saddened, but the emotion never sprung onto her face, 'Well .. I lived in the mountains; The Keres Tribe is a mountain colony. I spent most of my time with my sister and guardian, because Nahzeetial parents often make the kids fend for themselves. No matter; our entire tribe was a family. We were like any normal Nahzeetial colony .. except we were spiritual; or at least, the elders were. It saddens me ... my elder, he passed away just a few days before I left for the academy. The last memory I have of my tribe is during the burning.' And a weird dream., she thought, 'But, no matter! Tell me about your home!'
PostPosted: Sat Apr 29, 2006 4:42 pm

Astrid was somewhat taken aback at Trela's words. "...my elder, he passed away just a few days before I left for the academy. The last memory I have of my tribe is during the burning."

"...The burning?" she echoed, thinking that it sounded ominous in her mind. A thought sprung up -- that maybe some slightly fanatic person had gone to the Nahzeetial and tried to wipe them out. The idea smoldered in the back of her head. She barely knew Trela, but she didn't care -- have an allegiance to Hod for so long, the thought made her more than angry.

"Did someone try to burn your town?" Her voice was level, and she was clearly trying to keep it that way. An image of Old Man Marter, his face grizzly and unkept with the dark stubble of beard, flashed into her mind. He heaved his huge butcher knife over his head. She darted between his legs, grabbing Hod from the puddle under the drain pipe. Whirling up, she brought her boot heel crashing down on the man's foot. Hearing him howl in pain accompanied by a sickening crack, she recalled realizing she had put on her father's boots, lined with steel in the heel. Slipping in the shallow water, her pants slick with mud, she ran, cradling the animal to her chest, who was hissing and spitting, yet didn't bite her. Hod. She'd name him Hod.

Snapping back to reality, Astrid shook her hair into her face. "Sorry," she muttered without a second thought. "I got distracted."

She was going to tell Trela about her own house, but wanted to affirm that the "burning" hadn't been someone like Old Man Marter out from a night of drinking with a torch in his fist.

Trela shook her head, 'No no!' A smirk danced upon her face. If someone had tried to burn her village down, they would have been killed; Nahzeetial can be very aggressive.

'The burning is like a ritual. The Nahzeetial burn the dead; the elders are respected for their knowledge, not their bodies.' Trela paused, remembering the elder's hawk. Absent-mindedly she mumbled (loud enough to comprehend), 'The burnings aren't as sad as one would think .. and .. within my tribe, all the elders have a familiar .. my elder's was a hawk; as I stated before. Once the elder passes, the hawk will leave until the burning. Once the burning commenses, the familiar will return and throw themselves in the fire ..'

Looking up, she realized how harsh that must sound, 'But the familiar does it on their own will. An elder is connected with the familiar on a spiritual level. Once the elder passes, the familiar loses a part of itself .. so they sacrafic themselves and the elder and familiar are connected once again .. instead in the spirit realm.'

Clearly from what Trela has stated, it seems her tribe is very spiritual. In fact they were .., 'I think my tribe might be one of the only spiritual Nahzeetial tribes to tell you the truth.' A grin; she was proud of her background.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 30, 2006 10:36 am

Astrid was silent, taking in Trela's explanation of the burning. It all seemed very...what was the word? It had a kind of fairy-tale like quality to it; as if it were an old story from ages past that had been retold again, only to become stronger. Yet it still had that 'ancient' feel to it. How many other Nahzeetial had told this explanation before Trela had? But they probably wouldn't have told it to a human...

She shifted a bit on the bed, thinking about it. "I understand what you mean," she said, as far as the description of the familiar returning to the person they had been bonded to. It did sound harsh, but in some way she understood this. "Sometimes I think of Hod as a familar." Astrid chanced a look at him. It was almost comical, because he had been looking at Trela, but with Astrid's quick glance, he turned his head and look at her instead. 'Yes?' he seemed to be saying, although Astrid knew that was more her mind pretending for him. She smiled.

"I know he isn't really, but we're still friends, anyway." She propped her head up on her hand, studying Trela. She wondered what it was like to have a snake's body like that; to get to slither everywhere, like Hod. Astrid thought she might miss her legs, but, that's because that's all I know. To Trela, she would probably miss her snake self.

"It's weird, but really cool, to hear about another place like yours. I imagined places like that a lot, but at home, everyone in the village lives in a house, and we're all humans. Although some people are altered of course, but, nobody thinks that is strange." Astrid sighed, thinking of the times she'd nicked books from her parents' shelves so she could read about far-away creatures like Trela. "I wish your kind would live in my village. It's so boring otherwise."

Trela grinned, 'Hod appears as a familiar to you .. as for myself; I've got no one. Usually the elders in my tribe will find their familiar while on a quest. I was hoping one day maybe that would be me.' Truth was, Trela's parents and sister were hunters .. her guardian was training to be an elder.

"I wish your kind would live in my village. It's so boring otherwise."

Trela shifted awkwardly, 'Erm .. one of the Nahzeetial's food sources are normal humans.' Her gaze fell onto the ground, then back to Astrid's, 'But, I've never eaten one. It's most the adults in my tribe that eat humans .. and even then they've only eaten them about twice a year. Even then, humans rarely stumble around our tribe .. if they do, they're almost dead .. considering our tribe lives so far away from any human village.' She smirked; but then realized the harsh sounding statements she had made, 'Nahzeetial are very misunderstood .. I'm sorry; it's in our nature ... some people are frightened by this ..' She coughed, 'That was the reason I wasn't looking forward to coming here too much .. I knew it'd be hard to make friends .. especially if there is an Aanida in the academy.'

Nahzeetial hated Aanida ... it was in their blood.

Trela hoped she wouldn't make the connection between herself and Astrid tense, or awkward. Trela respected Astrid ...

Astrid stared, then gave a bit of a low whistle. She had no idea how everyone back home had so convienently forgotten to add that information, but the fact that they were probably afraid had something to do with. This was a new developement...

"Hmm," Astrid said, rubbing her hand on the bottom of her chin. It was clear now why people at home had avoided talking about anything but humans. They must be afraid of the Nahzeetial, any whatever other species were out there, too. But they didn't always talk as if they were afraid...more like they hated them.

That made sense too, didn't it. Generally when people were afraid, they hated what made them afraid. Like Hod. That's right, just like Hod...except Hod doesn't really hurt THEM, just their chickens and all...

"I didn't know," Astrid said. She met Trela's eyes. "A lot of the people at home wouldn't even talk about other species. But I guess I know why now. They were probably afraid."

Somehow, sitting not far from Trela, she couldn't share the sentiment. She just didn't feel that at any moment, Trela would lunge at her and try to rip off her head from her shoulders.

A memory came to her. She'd found Hod out back, mysteriously gone from her room that morning. And she caught him red-handed, or, red-mouthed as it were; he had found the bird nest in the oak tree in the backyard. Astrid had been watching them for some time; her father being a bird lover, of course she could identify them. Cooper's hawk, as far as she could tell. Right nasty tempers they had; but she loved watching the female and male Coop prepare to raise the young there.

Hod had eaten one of the young. Whether he found it dead or had actually gone for it, she had no idea. Her father was livid about it, but she couldn't bring herself to hold feelings against Hod. It was only his nature, and this was how he survived. It was a shame, but there was nothing that could be done, even if she HADN'T felt badly for the parents. She knew she should be happy Hod was even alive -- if the female Coop had caught him in the act like Astrid had, no doubt she would have killed him on the spot...

Astrid shook her head. She sighed. "Well, I don't feel threatened by you. I don't know if Nahzeetial can even choose one human over another not to eat. But," she winked, smirking. "I know a few people at home I wouldn't mind seeing eaten."

Old Man Marter, she mutter disgustedly in her mind. Ohhh what she would give to see Trela rear up in his face and smirk at him. The man would probably wet his pants from being so afraid.

Astrid cleared her throat a bit and held out a hand grasping Trela's from nearby. She shook her hand slowly, and grinned. "From a hawk to a snake, and a human to a Nahzeetial, maybe we can manage a bit of a pact not to eat each other, eh?" Because we both know if the other tried it, we'd have something up our sleeves to thwart her plan.

Even besides that, Astrid liked Trela a whole lot. As allies, they would be stronger together...

Trela smiled; for some reason, she was really happy and grateful that Astrid didn't think of her differently. She felt she needed to clear something up, 'Oh, no need to worry about my Nahzeetial nature taking over or anything. Nahzeetial only eat normal humans. Altered humans and other species are our allies; most of the time. Except Aanida. They are the arch-enemies of the Nahzeetial.'

She grinned and laughed at the idea of a pact, 'Of course, but I think the pact will end up turning into a team, don't you think?' Trela winked and smirked; she felt that herself and Astrid could become an duo to reckon with.

Trela glanced at Hod, her tongue flickered, 'And he can be the sidekick.' She laughed.
