The answer to your question isn't written in any dictionary - one reason that using dictionary definitions has some serious drawbacks in everyday conversation since rarely do people define words exactly as the dictionary does in their own minds. Some people would certainly label those who make accidental violations of their word as hypocrits. Because, as outside observers, we cannot know if it was a deliberate violation or an accidental one. We can't get inside their heads and know if they malevolently planned to decieve us. Humans are very poor lie detectors, and science can't directly measure many forms of deception.

That is true, but can't one tell if some one is not telling the truth by making assumtions. I'm not saying all the time but people can put 2 and 2 together and see the obvious right?

We all have to sides to our life, or two parts any way. There's what we show on the outside and what's really going on inside of us. On the outside we put up fronts that mask who we truely are and over time we're able to learn to cover up any serious problems that we're trying to overcome on the inside. By this front we are able to cover up what we don't want to be seen and fool other people into believing our failisees, they want to believe what's on the outside to be the truth. By putting up these fronts we are being hypocrites to ourselves, and since most people do this then that leaves it that most people are hypocrites for not being true to themselves.

Not every one does this you know.... At least I don't. I may change depending on my enviroment but I keep the basic things that make me me.

And as for masking your feelings. Some times it is best to do this.

I did not mean to put it that absolutely everyone does this, for I don't always but sometimes yes. I meant it more as a generality and that a lot of people do.

Care to explain this statement of yours with a little more detail?

I often seen the word "hypocrisy" thrown around to insult people or tarnish their credibility. I bet we've all been called hypocrites at one point or another. Whether or not it is warranted or not isn't important. Lately whenever I see this word thrown around, my first reaction is "who cares?"

To be a hypocrite is a key part of being human. If you're not a hypocrite, you're not human, for we are all hypocrites at one point or another (though some more often than others). Why is hypocricy such an integral part of human nature? Why do we so often preach what we do not practise ourselves? Why do you call ourselves things that our actions clearly state that we are not? And why is "hypocrite" thrown around as an insult when we are all clearly hypocrites?

It is used a lot to discredit people, but I see it more often being used to incorrectly discredit their arguments.

It's a pet hate of mine. People calling other people hypocrites when they've just got inconsistent or logically incompatable ideas.

A hypocrite has double-standards. It's not the same, but too few people see this.
