Actually, I do believe it would be illegal to ban gays from the prom. That's segregation of an extracurricular activity, which falls in with school.
According to the Supreme Court ruling of Plessy v. Ferguson, if there must be segregation, it will be "seperate but equal". Now, granted this was for race (and was overturned by Brown v. Board) . . .
But does this mean anything to anyone here: "No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."?
It should. Why? It's the opening to the fourteenth amendment.
FIGHT IT! The school system has the ability to remove cerain rights for protection purposes, as, during school hours, they are the legal guardians, but this has nothing to do with protection. All this is dealing with is being biggoted. Again, FIGHT IT!
And if they find some loop-hole, just enter the doors seperately, then meet up inside. We do a similar thing here with alcohol (our school dances are breathylized). Now, I don't partake (well, at the dances, that is. And when I do consume it, I moderate myself. No more than one).

Gay couples should be able to go to their normal prom and have fun. They have every right to go there and have fun. The people who have a problem with that shouldn't be going to prom then.

BAD idea. It says that regular prom should be just for straight people, and that all the gays can just be put somewhere else. Or, if it's not taken in that negative form, it makes gay people look like they have to be treated specially - the opposite end of the sexual orientation issue. Some people "support" it so much that they treat people with different sexualities better or just different than straight people. It's just as bad as treating them with violence, or anger.

I say its a good idea, we have them in the area. It is a place for LGBTA people to have fun with prom without feeling threatended

While I would love to go to one of these with every fiber of my being, I'd be very concerned about safety. Gay-bashers would try everything in their power to ruin it (crashing it, protesting outside), and while I appreciate that we can't live a life of fear, it would be a pain in the a** to deal with all of that.

i think if it is getting to that case then it is getting way out of hand at those schools and that the school board should be taking note of that...if they are feeling that bad that they want it sperate thenthey must really feel self consious and im pretty sure that should it go ahead anti-lbgt's would gate crash and make it un safe for them again

That may be how you see it, but let's stop and consider their point of view, to fully understand WHY these clashes are occuring.
First, we'll take another look at the "pro-gay" argument. We, most of us here I assume, did not choose our sexuality. We may have chosen to ACCEPT it or not, but we did not choose IT. Now, because of that, you think that all you're fighting for is to be equal with the OTHER people who didn't choose thier sexuality, but are straight and get all sorts of benefits (legal AND social) because of it.
HOWEVER.
Those on the "anti-gay" side honestly and whole-heartedly believe that you CHOSE to be gay, straight, bi, whatever. The way THEY see things, you people are trying to do somethign that has NEVER before occured in America's history, and what probably shouldn't. They think that you're trying to get yourselves EXTRA or SPECIAL rights based off of a CHOICE you made.
And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is where the problems all occur.
oh dear i ruined the quotes on that... oh well. i agree that that is where the problems can occur. really if you think about it... in the long run why would anyone choose to be something that makes their life [at times] so difficult? with all this discrimination, it's sort of like the conversations i've had about race and mental/physical retardation... these people cannot help the fact that they're simply a different colour, or because they were born or became physically or mentally different from the norm.. we simply cannot help the fact that we are a certain way... but when i've discussed the race issue and said those things i've gotten people to say "wow, i never thought of it that way"... we simply cannot help our differences. A gay-friendly prom, a tolerant prom, yes, when there isn't tolerance in the whole of the student body for the safety and comfort... but not as an exclusion. we want to be tolerated, not excluded. I'd say having a group of LGBTAs go to schools and discuss tolerance and the facts about LGBTs. but... i don't know.

another thing that bothered me about prom: 2 girls from my school a couple years back tried to go to prom as friends (they were straight), and they were denied access, even though they had tickets, because they didn't have male dates. wtf?

Our school didnt try to make a gay prom, but all GSA members were encouraged to go to a gay prom in the city over. Our school has the same policy for gay couples at prom, but it doesnt really matter. Our school either has very few Bisexual/gay/lesbians or (more likely) not that many are coming out

If it comes down to that than thats fine but I think it would be alot better if gays were just allowed at regular prom. If there was to be a gay prom then I think there would be alot of controversy over segregation and stuff even though there already is which I think would be better than just a few straights unhappy that they have to share there prom with the gay people.

I've heard of this. I personally do not like the idea of a "gay prom" as it is discriminating. There should be one prom where everyone is allowed to attend.

There is talk of a summer ball for all the LGBT societies of the universities of London, which is I suppose along the same lines of a gay prom, only based more on the colours ball that the sports societies have. Gay prom sounds fun, but so does normal prom, my university doesn't do a general prom or anything like that, so if this summer ball does happen I would definatly be interested in going.

Well i'm a sophomore so i can't go to my schools prom unless i'm invited. I'm having one of my junior (or senior...we haven't figure this out yet) girlfriends to invite me... and if they don't let us buy tickets oor if they don't let us in the dance (they did that one year to 2 girls who went as friends) then we can call then out for discrimination.

SubHumanRemains In some highschool the students are trying to plan a Gay Prom... and go against the school board who is banning gay couples from going to prom? (correct me if any of this info is wrong... i heard it during dinner smile ) Both my parents and i feel that by trying to separate LGBT teens and people will make people discriminate them even more... and make some LGBT's tihnk that they shouold have special circumstances and such. I think it'd be better to just protest against what the school isn't allwoing, instead of separating LGBT teens even more. anyone? anyone? comments? also if anyone can find an article on it... that'd be cool. hmm thats really odd but thats how some people are they cant just accept that some people are just more happy with same sex ^^
