I agree that it could be case by case depending on the situation and costumes probably. But I think most of the time if it fallows the law ( xd no black censors are needed xd ) it should be fine! God if the kids are watching anime to begin with they probably shouldn't be to surprised! No matter where they see the anime if their old enough to realize what their seeing showing on a person they might have already started catching all the sexual comments in the animes (there in all animes, even 'kiddy' animes have them at times!)
Either way I have no problem making it look like I'm only wrapped in ribbons of gauze for a Chi costume! biggrin (Fallowing dress code of course!) xD =^.^= I don't like altering the original designs but with the resources I have on hand I could make do! Depends on the anime I'd say though. Something like Chobits they have tons and tons of costumes for Chi and Freya but for an anime that only has one wardrobe probably try and stay as close to it as possible!

Seriously, I really think it's up to the person. They can modify it if they want because they want to seem like a slut or anything just like the anime person would. And it's good because other people sometimes get digusted by it because we dont need to see anything special. 3nodding So, as long as you know what character their going for, it doesn't really matter!

IO believe it depends on how much you can get away with making. My mom helps me make parts of my costumes and if I showed her an outfit like Kasumi's outfit from Dead or Alive 2, (I did too) she stared at me and said "NO." But she did let me be Tira from Soul Calibur 3, even though I had to alter the top and the shorts she wears...

I don't like to modify. if you don't like the way the outfit is then don't make it. its your choice on weather or not you want to wear it. if you don't then find another costume, if you do then just live with it.

I'd never alter the outfits. I'd just wear a skin-tone suit underneath it.

I am very modest when it comes to my body and have found a general comprimise that works for me. I do wear body suits and bike shirts, but I also do modify some. Lets be realistic here guys, Life is not Anime. Anthy maybe able to keep that table cloth dress on while she waltzes around the room, but youre going to need a lot of sweing for it to survie the con. But that you can do without having it look too diffrent. For me, I do several costumes. One of them is lady subaru from .HAck. She wears a shirt that shows off a lot of belly. For that I wear a body suit, however, I conceeded to reality. The top dosnt stay closed agaisnt my skin when I bend like it does on her, and The bodysuits are lowcut so as not to be obvios with bare shoulders. So I altered the top some to close it a bit.
Personally I think unaltered some costumes, while they can come out well, should not be allowed at Cons. As it was pointed out, there are kids present. Besides the constant stream of Felcia (street fighter) girls, I saw last year a "sexy No Jitsu" at the con. Yes it was done well, and she wore a body suit... but I think its a bit innapropriate. Maybe its just me.
But yes, modify if you need to, but subtly. Especcially if you crossplay. I saw a female wolfwood one time whos chest was hanging out because she opened the shirt too far down.
Reality wears on costiumes. Not only are the charictors drawn, and thus only slip out of their clothing if its intentional, they dint have the wear and tare we do. They dont have bags hanging off heir arms or croos.
And if youre wearing it at the con youve got at least once consession to reality, your badge. If you want perfect realsim, make it perfect and take photos, but for walking around the con, please make sure your costume covers you at all times.
We really dont want a repeat of the Love Hina cosplayers heart

Amai said it best.
I'd alter. I'm not a prude person, but I often get worried about wardrobe malfunctions. Hence, I just placed flesh tone straps on my strapless costumes. I am considering cosplaying as Faye in her opera dress. That dress does show a lot of boobage, and I'd also like to save this dress for other formal occasions as well. Yes, she does have the jacket to cover, but for my comfort, level, I'm gonna just make this dress tasteful to wear at something formal. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind showing some cleavage, but it's another thing when your boobies are hanging out.

it depends on just hot much is being shown. I mean these outfits were not made for a world with wind, gravity and all of that. I mean i think it's fine to chnage it a lil to make sure you don't look silly.
Like say i was doing tifa from ff7, i would wear a white tee that goes all the way down and covers my belly and not show my middle, i doubt any one would really care. well whatever you can do anything you'd like anyway lol!!!

It's up to the one who cosplays, there isn't any 'rules' for cosplay really.. as long as it looks good, I think it's okay ^^

i think it's wrong to modify for modesty. if you don't feel comfortable with how the character is dressed then go as someone else. i have seen too many girls do characters with short skirts (school girl outfits) and have the skirts too long. i mean come on please! how hard is it to wear a short skirt? if i can do it......
but i think it's ok to modify somewhat if you look better personally that way. by all means i will modify my costume if it makes me look cuter or better.
OMI most con or at least the bigger ones are for adults. and if someone does not not their children to be exposed to this then they shouldn't let them go. I am fine with people wearing whatever costume they want to wear...even if they look bad....that was their choice and it doens't offen me or anything. rolleyes i heart crossplay. and i like seeing sexy costumes. and i've seen some trashy SnJs, but WHATEVER.

Personally, my first concern (or at least tied with accuracy) is comfort. Certain things I don't mind showing, while others I do. Plus, there is the issue with certain fitted or restricting garments being difficult to make.
Okay, I have some body image issues. I'm willing to show chest and legs, but not my midriff. Kind of odd, but that's just how I am.

i dont think there is anything wrong with modifying it slightly... like making a skirt a little longer or making a shirt a little less low cut... but when is a dramatic change (as in... knee length sailor moon skirt...) then it doesnt really look right. honestly, if you cant manage to show a certain amount of skin, its probably a good idea to go back and revise your cosplay choices...
i, like someone else in this guild, am going to be cosplaying toshiya from dir en grey in the yokan outfit... which is basicly a long white shirt... well... since im not toshiya and im going to be at a con full of glomping groping maniacs, i have decided that im going to make the shirt a little longer than toshiy'a original one... and probably wear a short pair of shorts underneath.

I find modifying ok, to certain limits. If it's a school girls' skirt, leave it. They're mostly all short, so you're stuck with it because someone will notice. But for a female to where something showing a bit of to much cleaving, give her the benefit of the doubt to bring the shirt up a bit.
One cosplay that was modified but I loved was a female Ace from One Piece. She wore a shirt that matched her skin, and athletics tape for the chest, and she looked wonderful
Remember, in the world of cosplay there seem to be 3 common laws:
1. Get the costume as precise as you can 2. If you can't do number one, or at least try your best, screw it up to all hell. (Look at man-Faye, he got his own show =o ) 3. Have fun. heart

I don't see anything wrong with modifying it for modesty, especially since most anime characters magically don't flash anyone (not including panty shots and such) so fixing it so something doesn't move or something helps the illusion. And I don't think using skin toned material is that big of a deal. It can cover you up, still have the illusion, and hold things together.
