Bat raises an eyebrow as Abasi runs past silently, keeping his own steady pace with an eyebrow raised in curiosity, and a similar look of curiosity that he uses, looking back over his shoulder to the chief on horseback. He's considered, a time or two, importing a horse or buying one here, to speed his travel a bit, but with his attatchments to animals often being stronger than his ties to people, he's not sure he could bear loosing a horse to an snake bite or an animal attack, or take care of one of the comparatively delicate animals out here, so he doesn't.
Everyone else seems dead set on the dogs and the dogs alone, making him wonder if they missed unspoken part of the Cheifs speach, or if he was just imaging it. They, after all, spoke the language better than he did. Wouldn't they be the first to pick up on it?

User Image"Eeets f...for 'dari." Kayin reminded himself as he prowled along the ground, his ears pinned back against his thin stormy mane. It was his turn to feed them, they were always bringing back what they could for him...Utomo always had to hunt twice as hard, as did Hodari. Neither of them were shabby hunters but it did take a lot of energy to bring back a kill enough to feed others. Kayin had only managed a few sucessful kills-mainly mice which was hardly enough to boast about. He moved far too loud for a hunter, breathing too hard in his excitement, russtling the grass far too much, and stepping too hard on the ground- all of which he was completely unaware of.

The cub was skin and bones, his ribs and spine showing clearly through his stormy pelt, his mane was shabby and undergrown for his age. One might be led to believe he had been disowned and horribly lucky to have lived this long. Disowned enough, but he and his brother fended for eachother... though Kayin was deathly dependant on Utomo.

He grunted, sitting himself back on his haunched to get a look around. Still nothing...where had all the foods gone?

Bat whistles his dogs again as they walk, Snick and Snap whirling to come charging back, tounge's lolling...then suddenly stop, almost falling over themselves and growling. Just because they 'can' fight a lion doesn't mean they, or many other creatures, would find it wise to do so, and the sight of Kayin makes them drop to their haunches, growling. Bat himself almost doesn't see the creature until it emerges from the grass, flopping onto boney haunches, and almost imedatiely swings his gun around to bear on the creature, though he doesn't yet fire. Starved looking lions are lions very prone to going man eater, seeking easier prey, and this one, though young, might still take a go at him. At least it looks young enough that there's probably not other lions circling them...or Snick and Snap would have took notice a lot sooner. "Alright you great hairy varmit...I dare ya to try somethin..." He mutters, wishing desperately for a cigarette, though some small part of his brain is itching with an absoloutely mad idea. Completely mad. Rediculous really. But dayymmmm wouldn't it be a good show for business if...nah. Would never work, even if it isn't that far grown.

User ImageCompletely obvivious to the growling dogs or hunter behind him, Kayin simply began grooming at one of his paws. His fur was in terrible shape but it didn't mean he couldn't try. He was still sloppy with grooming himself, his brother and himself had to figure just about everything out for themselves- though Utomo was the one that normally caught on the fastest. He hadn't seen his brother in a few days so his grooming was lacking.

Giving another grump he stood himself up, lifting his head to sniff at the wind- he could smell other creatures, the other humans but they were still far enough away not to worry too much over... still if they came this way he'd be in trouble. "....smrrerrrr fun...eeryyy." He noted to himself as he turned about only to freeze in mid-step, finally taking notice of the three behind him.

His eyes went wide but he didn't move, his paw still held in mid-step. His ears didn't perk up like would be normal for a lion, they had been drooped to either side of his head, he only really used them to express himself. His fur started to rise though, standing on end along his neck and down his spine.

Shyiiiiiiiit. And of course Abasi and the rest of the hunters were broken off and totaly focused on finding wild dogs...Abasi hadn't even so much as bothered to speak to anyone else, let alone take notice if one of the other hunters was staring down a young lion.
"Don't even try it, varmit..." He growls, eyes narrowing as he thumbs the trigger on his riffle. Starved as it is, it could still tear him open in half a second, and would probably gain a taste for such easy meat thereafter, if it hadn't already. He doesn't get the impression that it's seen a gun before, or it might have bolted from the scent of gun oil and powder already, but thats actually a negative on his side, since he has to convince the thing to be afraid of the gun. That or play lion tamer...which works wondefuly in dime store books about Tarzan and Alan Quartermain, but this is real life.
Snick and snap whine peircingly, their ears flat against their skulls, uncertain what to do, weather to fight or run.
"Ol' Bat'll give you a mouthful of shot before you get a moutful of him, thats for damn sure..."
He's not sure what he's thinking when he fumbles in a pocket for one of the peices of smoked meat he slips to Snick and Snap when they've done well, a trick he often uses to reinforce their nearly blind loyalty, and holds it up for inspection between two fingers. "Betcha you'd like this a sight better. Why don't you chaw on this and leave me outa your dinner plans...."

User ImageKayin stiffened, watching the man's mouth move, he did it with other creatures, watching intently as they spoke to get what they were saying... but this creature's mouth moved funny, nothing he was saying made any sense. Kayin slowly lowered himself to his belly, starringup at the man with wide-eyes in some false hope that the grass would hide him, of course that was unlikely with his stormy coat against the golden grass but it was better than nothing. He could try to fight- but those dogs were bigger than him. He slowly looked between both of them. They talked funny too... he couldn't understnad what they were doing either... they were with this funny peach...ostrich thing. His eyes looked back up to the human. Maybe they were friendly? Maybe he wanted to give him the stick.

"Mmm...I...I nn...caan eets stick." He stumbled with his words, to the human it would be perhaps the strangest sound from a lion he'd ever heard, a slurred assortment of chirps and groans, "Utomo s...se....seed it...maaar sik."

He tossed the Jerky on the ground in front of the crouching lion, still clutching the gun defensively, as he slinks back a step or two. He can't just stand here all day, the hunt is going to move off without him, but if he fires off a bullet without good reason, he'll spook any game withthin ear shot. Damn...and he's given his knife to Asad...
Maybe it's sick, it certainly doesn't sound quite right...or look right for that matter....

User ImageThe cub jumped as the jerky was tossed to the ground, crouching down to the ground once more as he eyed the thing that had been thrown at him, then up to the creature that had thrown it. He was backing off... maybe it was an offering. It still looked like a stick... a weird one but it smelled different.

The cub slowly prowled forward, reaching forward to swat the thing with his paw, finding no reaction he leaned over it, sniffing at it curiously. Another glance was given to the human and his dogs before he bent down to nibble at it. This stuff... it was glorious! The creature was feeding him! Why he didn't really even care, it was good food... it was food period. Once it was gone Kayin sniffed at the ground for more, his posture was much more relaxed though he seemed disappointed that that's all there was of the good stick stuff.

He looked up to the human, his ears perking up slightly as he walked towards him, maybe he had more.

What a nightmare, he can't think of a time he's wanted more to roll and light a cigarette than right now, not much bigger than a dog, or maybe smaller than some dogs. Smaller than Snick and Snap, but it's still a lion, which has their respect and his....still....it looked a lot less like it was going to attack. Frowning, he reached into his pocket again for another peice of dried meat, tossing it on the ground again.
"Huh...you like that, Varmit?" He says slowly, facinated. He wasn't sure what was going through his head, he wasn't no lion tamer and this wasn't no circus, but the thing was starving, and he had to guess there were some traits about hungry animals that just held over all around. " 'S the mater with you anyway? Your mum gone get dead?" He notes, with a curious frown.

User ImageKayin brightened as another piece was thrown to the ground. This time he pounced on it playfully, his tail snapping around in the air as he slowly lifted a paw to peek at the piece of meat. He liked this stuff... maybe it grew somewhere, then he could bring it back and feed the others. It didn't run away either. He laid himself down to eat the strip of meat, holding it inbetween his paws as he gnawed at it, watching the human talk to him.

He paused, looking up brightly with as much of a smile as he could manage, "Fank Yuuu!" He had nearly forgotten his manners! Whatever this thing was trying to say didn't look mean, he wasn't bearing his teeth or snorting.
PostPosted: Mon May 01, 2006 3:10 pm

Bat let out a slow breath, clicking the saftey on his rifle back of slowly. The 'smile' doesn't quite register as such, since a lion and a man smile differently, but he recognizes the forward curl of whiskers from contented barncats. Food may have been exactly what was needed here, and he starts to step carefully around the creature to rejoin the hunt, much to the releif of Snick and Snap, who swish their tails and wag cautiously. This is perhaps a bit out of character for your standard cowboy and gunslinger, but he learned a long time ago that shooting every single potential threat on the Savana would be more bullets than he could afford.

User Image
The cub watched the human walk around him, slowly padding after him, his ears still perked forward and his tail still swishing contently behind him. He was a good-thing, he didn't want to hurt him, he shared his food even! If all the ostrich-things were like this then they weren't so bad after all. Maybe he could bring it back and it could feed Utomo too! The idea excited the cub but how would he tell the human?

He jumped at the man's leg, catching his pantleg in his mouth and gave a playful tug back.
PostPosted: Mon May 01, 2006 4:22 pm

Bat gives a startled yelp at the sudden teeth in his pant leg, stamping his other boot to try and startle the creature into detatching, grateful as he is that it's not his -leg- it has...
"Hey! Git!" He protests. "Gitoff, varmit! I aint playin!"

User ImageKayin didn't hear the loud protests to his little game, he did see the foot stomp but figured he'd put the man of balance. He glanced playfully up to the human, still with the pantleg tight in his mouth and his paws planted to either side of the man's foot.
