Since this is a christian guild, I thought I might as well strike up some bible talk.

About a week ago I was at a Bible study and someone had mentioned this verse - "On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS." - Revelation 19:16.

This is of course in reference to the return of Jesus during end times, and an interesting point was brought up. The person said it sounded like the Bible was saying that Jesus would come back with a tatoo on his thigh. I don't really know if that's what it means or not. I just thought I'd ask what everyone here thought.

I have no idea what that's about. I'm sure there's some historical significance to it. I find the idea of Jesus being a tattooed Jew....even post resurrection and definately knowing his own divinity, to be an extremely weird idea.

But I have no idea.

I just know that Jews don't get tattoos. It's enough to get you banned from being buried in a Jewish cemetary.

Yeah, that's because Jews still uphold all of the old testament laws.

Well, yeah, but I still don't get what the reference is... I wish I had a biblical smart guy around who could answer this question...

Broken Black Shackles already found it for us on the first page. It's Leviticus 19:28 "You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the LORD."

I meant what the Revelation reference was... There has to be some significance to that, and I don't think it's the Risen Christ sportin' a tatt.

yeah, but it says you shall not make cuts in your flesh for the dead....then it says nor mark yourself with tattoos....it doesn't say for whom. But i had heard somewhere, that the only reasoning for the no tattoos rule was because at that time, that was how pagans and other types of tribes identified with one another..and the jewish people were not to look like these people. But anyway, I don't see what's so wrong with getting a tattoo..especially if it's for Jesus or God. I want a cross on my inner arm with scripture written on it...lol.

Anyway....I suppose we can debate this issue of tattoos if you all want to..but do try to keep it civilized..lol.
What scripture do you want on the cross tattoo? o.0

i dunno...lol. probably John 3:16, but that seems too cliche. Then I thought about Isaiah 53:5...but that also seemed a little cliche. so I haven't really decided yet.
Sounds awesome! Tell me when you decide. xD

I'm actually thinking of getting a cross/sword like tattoo on my back, got the idea from a friend actually. But I think it sounds cool, it would be a big tattoo though, the hilt of the sword would be going up the back of my neck, and the blade would go down my spine, then the sides of the hilt would be on my shoulders. But, it would also look like a cross. It's sort of hard to explain, and I'm probably talking to much, sorry. =x I just like tattoos, though I've never had one yet. ^^;

I meant what the Revelation reference was... There has to be some significance to that, and I don't think it's the Risen Christ sportin' a tatt.

"I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. "He will rule them with an iron scepter." He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:
KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds flying in midair, "Come, gather together for the great supper of God, so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and mighty men, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, small and great." Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to make war against the rider on the horse and his army. But the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who had performed the miraculous signs on his behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped his image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. The rest of them were killed with the sword that came out of the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh."~Revelation 19:11-21

That's the section that it's from. So, as you can see, Jesus comes back with that written on his robe and on his thigh and leads the army of Heaven and defeats the army of the Anti Christ. ((the part that says "He will rule them all with an iron scepter" is in reference to Psalm 2:9))

I have one thing:

A lot of times, tattooing was for the slave trade. Like branding cows. The Nazis did it, just like some African traders and Middle Eastern traders. Maybe Leviticus is saying "don't be a slave"? Well. In a physical way.

I'm surprised no one's come up with the point that just because his name is written there doesn't neccessarily mean it's a tattoo.

I understand what the verse says and it says that it is written on his robe and on his thigh. So how do we know if it is a tatoo or if it is written. But then again how can it be written, it might be a tatoo. Revelations is my favorite book in the Bible.

Well, I'm just saying it could be, like, a birthmark.
I mean, this IS the Lord we talking 'bout here.

How bout this, maybe before he was put on the cross someone carved it into his thigh and it is a scar and the robe reflects what is on the thigh. But we don't know that is right or wrong either. It is just a thought.

Well, again, I feel we're confining the Lord to the rules of Earth.
But, he is above those.
For all we know, it isn't even a physical mark.
Although, I may be going over people's heads with that one.

You are not going over my head I understand what you are saying. It might not even be a physical mark.

very interesting... maybe it means the thigh of his clothing... but then, tattoos werent unheard of in biblical times as far as i know... hmm.

Oh. That's cool. I don't think I've ever read that before. Of course, I don't think I've ever read through the WHOLE of Revelation before, so yeah.
