I'm Entering for the...Spellcaster!

The Story: A shadowed figure sat at the end of the inn dining room. It was a curious and cautious set of foals who wandered into the inn and over to his table.

"They say that you know the history?" Said the first of the young foals.

Nesterin chuckled to himself and told the young ones to go and get something to drink for this would be a long story. He waited for them to come back eagerly.

He got comfortable and settled his wings around himself.

"It was a dark and ominous evening.... or thats the story you expected us to tell.....

This is a more.... Sparkly story. Welcome to the tale of our spellcaster. He had set forth to bring joy and color into the world. He would bring sunshine and rainbows and happiness wherever he went. This is his story.....

In a world of constant darkness there was a time it was said of color and vibrancy. This is the history in which Nesterin Sylbanise had studied. He was one who wanted to know the history behind everything. He wanted to use his powers to bring light and color back to the world. He knew he was colorful. Full of rainbows and sparkles and everything shiny. He just couldn't see it, but thats getting ahead of ourselves.

Long Ago. In a time not many remember, It was said that a powerful sorcerer had corrupted the land and stolen all of the color and light for himself. That he left everyone else in darkness and shadows." Nesterin continued telling the story of the old sorcerer. He could see that the young ones were already excited. "It was this same sorcerer who ruled over the land. Anytime there was color or brightness in the world he would capture it and take it to his castle. He filled his own happiness off the bright light and sparkles of others. He drained them of their colors and sparkles. This was how he lived for centuries. Draining the land and the people in it of all the color and sparkles. This once bountiful beautiful land... now shriveled and dead." He shuddered for a moment remembering. He could see the shocked faces of the young ones and he chuckled a bit.

"Now then. This had gone on for far to long. There was one who was born of color and light. He sparkled and left sparkles wherever he went. Bringing laughter and color to those around him. He had studied the old ways and he knew about the the old sorcerer but by this time.... he had assumed it was simply just a story. An old legend to scare young ones." He laughed as he saw their faces go angry. "Yes yes it does happen occassionally.... but I digress...." he said with a laugh. The young ones settled back down. "Our Sparkly Hero grew to have two friends whom he loved beyond everything else. He was always the cheerful upbeat and bright one of the group. These three friends were the three amigos. They did everything together. That was until his friends got trapped by the sorcerer.... he would come to find out.... that the sorcerer was indeed real. That he still hunted everything, and was the reason the world was bleak. Our Spellcaster hearing that his friends were captured set off on the arduous journey to find his friends and fend off the evils of the sorcerer.

It was a long journey and as he went he would do his best to spread the sparkles and cheer he was known for. As he finally got to the castle of the sorcerer he knew he needed to proceed with caution. It would do his friends zero good to rush in headlong and get all of them trapped. Instead he made a plan based off the old legends and stories. He used the knowledge he had in order to save his friends.

He approached the castle and let his brightness and sparkles shine for all to see within the castle. This had the old sorcerer drooling for the power that would come from this young stallion. He told his guards to let the spellcaster inside the castle. This would be where he would drain him and take his powers for his own.

Nesterin on the other hand was prepared for this. He would make the deal to save his friends. He would stay with the sorcerer until he could find a way to truly defeat him. He knew that he would endure. He had to. He needed his friends to be free and happy.

Nesterin stormed into the throne room of the old sorcerer and demanded the freedom of his friends. He told the old sorcerer that he would do whatever the sorcerer wanted if he just freed his friends. The sorcerer laughed knowing full well that he could recapture the others later but knew that capturing this one while he could was the better part he agreed.

Nesterin nodded to his friends and told them to go. He told them he would see them again and not to worry for him. The old Sorcerer laughed at him and forced the friends outside the castle walls.

Not knowing what was going to happen next Our Hero set forth to out shining the old sorcerer. He was all sorts of rainbow colors and sparkles. He was glowing and leaving little sparkles everywhere he moved or stepped. He almost seemed to light up the room with his determination. This old sorcerer had to be stopped and our Spellcaster was the one to do it. He stepped forward to the old Sorcerer. "YOU WILL NOT HARM ANYONE OR ANYTHING EVER AGAIN." He poured all of his colors all of his light and all of his sparkle into the spell he was trying to weave around the old sorcerer. He figured if he could just push all of his magic into the sorcerer then he could free the land of the evil that kept it dead and bleak. He figured it had to be like a balloon. If you filled it too much it would pop. So he just kept concentrating. As he willed more and more the color started draining out of him. The life and the sparkle of him started to leave him. It all went to the old sorcerer. Our Hero had so much light inside him that it did indeed all seep into the old sorcerer! He exploded in a bright explosion of sparkle and color. This left the land and everyone in it back in a bountiful colorful land. This had brought the balance back. It had drained Nesterin but it was worth it. The last thing he had seen before he passed out was the big bright light of the old Sorcerer exploding." The young ones gasped and one of them seemed to have tears in their eyes for our hero. It warmed the old ones bones to see and he smiled. "It'll be ok in the end.... its ok." He said to the young one. They nodded and one begged him to continue the story.

"It cant end there!!! He cant be gone!!!!" The young one exclaimed.

Our storyteller laughed. "Oh hes not gone young one. Not by any means. He's all around us." Chuckling he continued. "Nesterin was found by his friends who hadn't gone far but were trying to devise a way to rescue their friend for they wouldnt allow for one of them to be trapped forever. As they saw the explosion and all of the sparkles and light that was back in the world they had rushed back into the castle of the old sorcerer. They found no traces of the sorcerer but there in the throne room on the floor they found a black and bleak body on the ground. They walked closer to see who it might be and realized it was their friend. They ran to him. He was unconscious, he had expended all of his energy and needed to sleep. They could see he was changed but at the moment the only thing they wanted to be sure of was that he would be ok. They hadn't noticed the differences on their own bodies yet." He giggled remembering it. "It took a while for Nesterin to wake. His friends dutifully stayed by his side. They had realized when looking at each other that they were no longer the bleak and dreary versions of themselves. They were now Bright and Colorful! As Nesterin started to wake they rushed to his side. One on each side. They supported him and cared for him as he woke. When his eyes finally opened and his friends were there in front of him. In their own vibrant colors. He was amazed. He was so happy for his friends. They had their sparkle back! He knew something was missing from himself as he just couldn't be that same happy go lucky stallion he was before. It was then that his friends grew quiet. They told him that his sacrifice would never be forgotten. That his brightness and sparkle was what was lighting up the world..." he paused for a moment.

"What.... what's wrong.....?" Came the small voice of the young one who had been close to crying.

Our storyteller smiled at the young one. "Our hero had realized that he had vanquished the old sorcerer but at the cost of his own light and his own sparkle. He could be so happy for his friends and the world but it did leave him a little hollow.... he lost his way for a long while.... it was those same friends...." he looked up behind the young ones to see two others just leaning against the wall of the inn. Legs crossed with a raised eyebrow. He had no idea when they had gotten there. "It was those same friends who banded with him to help defeat anyone who may try and take the light or the sparkle from the land again. They formed the Protectors of Sparkle!!" He said while shaking his front hooves trying to be silly. His friends burst out laughing and walked towards the table with the young ones.

"Thats not exactly how I remember it....." the mare chuckled.

"Yeah I remember more swordfighting and battles and bloodshed!!" Said the other buff stallion.

The young ones looked up at the other two brightly colored friends and gasped as they looked back and forth.

"Now now.... it is just a story after all....." Nesterin said as he smiled and winked at the young ones. "But I think your parents might be missing you three.... you should probably run along now.... we wouldnt want them to worry...." he said chuckling.

They made their goodbyes and shuffled out of the Inn.

"You left out some things...." Said his female companion.

"Yeah.... I did.... but its ok. They will figure it out one day... and it will be an even better story then..." Nesterin said with a laugh.

"What will we do with you?!" Said the Buff Male.

"Continue adventuring with me?" He said laughing.

The friends all broke into laughter and vowed once again to stay together. ❤️

The Story:

Like a fairytale, a tapestry depicts a story, yet each thread can have its own narrative. The stories of Beauty and the Beast have many origins. Ancient tales were passed down orally from generation to generation. In the Soq lands, a fairytale exists of a beauty and the beast. Most bards claim the beauty was pale, yet others claim the beauty was golden. Few storytellers mention that there was a story before the fairy tale. A precursor tale that is largely ignored or unknown.

♦♢

This story starts not with a rose but with a crow…Under the cold grip of winter, a lone familiar crow flies through the night sky above the eerie forest. The stars shine dazzlingly, finally free from the competition of illuminating moonlight. The new moon hangs overhead, barely illuminating the forest floor below. The phase of the moon and the winter weather conditions make traveling through the forest dangerous.

A young pregnant mare, her eyes white with terror, dashes through the dark forest. She stumbles on the damp, slippery forest floor, her hooves align at the last minute to prevent her from falling. The pregnant mare glances behind her as her pursuer rapidly gains ground. The mare's flank bleeds, showing the bite her pursuer had inflicted on her earlier.

A solitary silhouette against the new moon watches as events unfold. The crow tracks the pair below while its wings beat steadily in the chilly night sky before it effortlessly flies away from the confrontation on invisible wind currents. Flying into the forest, the crow circles his soq companion. He vocally caws as he lands on the stallion's shoulders. After years of companionship, the crow’s dangerous nails only slightly p***k the stallion's shoulders. Nuzzling against the stallion's cloak, the crow retells the events that were currently transpiring in the woods.

The stallion's pink eyes flashed in anger. Named Nuit Gardien but referred to by forest inhabitants as the Spellcaster, the stallion acted as the guardian of the forest. The pregnant mare pursuer was known to Nuit as a repeat offender. The offender, a territorial bunny-eared mare, adored causing terror to the forest inhabitants. None in the mare's herd rebuked the territorial mare for her behavior. Nuit contemplated the situation, deciding to gift the bunny-eared soq her deepest desire. As an Angenicorn, Nuit’s power lay in creating illusions. He would create an illusion over the mare's visage. If the territorial mare desired to inspire fear, she would inspire fear in all soqs. Her wish would be double-sided since fear would alienate her from her companions. Yet if the mare showed kindness to others, he would break the illusion.

Nuit closed his eyes, and the rose pattern on his coat started glowing. The glowing markings were visual proof that he was using his Angenicorn powers. He sent three separate waves of illusions into the forest. The first illusion is to stop the bunny mare from pursuing the pregnant mare. The second illusion would appear as a gathering of fireflies that would guide the pregnant mare to a herd of nearby healers and midwives soq. Finally, the third and most powerful illusion would stick to the bunny mare. Nuit wistfully smiled as he felt the illusion of terror successfully envelop the territorial mare. Today, he was giving the mare her deepest wish. In the future, will the mare wish become a gift or twist into a curse? Nuit felt his body suddenly drop and consciousness fade due to overusing his power. His familiar crow stood guard over the sleeping stallion.

Famous is the enchanting tale of Beauty and the Beast. Only a few soq whisper of the Spellcaster or the crow, yet their actions are the precursor to the well-known story.

[I recommend the early French film La Belle et la Bête (1946) for those who enjoy the story of Beauty and the Beast. Also, it is interesting and sad to read up on the real case of Petrus Gonsalvus.]

Jeez you all made it so hard to choose, so much so that I had to enlist judging help. I'd have loved to have extra prizes to dish out for each category. Thank you all for entering. heart Here's the winners, assuming that the winners list is all up to date as of my double checking before posting.
