Not Faustite?

He had the temper like Faustite. He had the face like Faustite. However, he was missing some other important Faustite features, so she stopped hitting him for the time being, despite Faustite being near the top of the list of people she would theoretically be down to murder.

"Okay, Not-Faustite," she said instead, tilting her head. "That means you're beating him up for fun? That's uh. That's not better. You understand how that's not better, right?"

She was already going through possibilities in her head. Was he trying to run some kind of scam? Had he lost his memories? That was definitely super common. Had they glamoured some unsuspecting Captain to look like Faustite?

The Negaverse had done weirder stuff before.

Anyway.

She whirled on her toes towards the mirror senshi, leveling her butterfly staff towards his face this time. "That means you must be the one draining them, huh?" 'Cause, they were definitely looking pretty drained.

"But I can maybe not fight you about it if you can tell me what's going on with him."

As usual, her curiosity was winning out over everything else. Something was happening here. She could just tell.

Happily listening to Captain Cadmium getting lectured and bopped by a fairy girl, Hybris froze when she whirled on him. Hand up, he smiled at her offer, and promptly began, "Well, did you see him jump right into a wall earlier? Well that happened! He gets too into things sometimes and ends up a little clumsy, which is actually incredibly endearing."

Giving a little, you know how it is, nod, he went on, "Usually he's very cool and sassy, so the gap, I swear sometimes it's so hard not to kiss him. Isn't that terrible?" Holding up a finger, he waggled it at her, "But he only likes boys, so don't fall in love, okay?"

Then he gave a happy little hum, "Besides, we're getting married."

"Excuse you," he huffed back, still rubbing his shoulder. Why the ******** did she hit so hard? "He tried to headlock me first, that's basically an invitation for me to break his nose." And he thought he sounded a little whiny, like he'd been listening to too many of Malory's complaints of late instead of simply shutting the boy up and putting that mouth to more useful work.

Mostly he thought knights were mediocre and ineffectual at best, because no knight he had ever met had gotten violent with him, nor did they do much more than scowl in his general vicinity or gently encourage him to Be Less Bad. But this knight was demonstrably worse than all the rest, not only for hitting him, but also for the implication of fighting his Extremely Decorative Fiance if the boy didn't surrender information to her.

Which he was, of course, doing. And Cadmium stared at him from over the knight's shoulder as the boy offered up a few little anecdotes at his expense. And that might've worked, if they gave it time, and Hybris meted out a few kernels of truth to mollify her, but he didn't want to think about parsing truth from white lie in whatever past she thought belonged to him.

So while Hybris ran his mouth, putting on his inoffensive display, the blonde Captain crept closer to the turned back of the knight. Then, deciding it was better if they could outrun her and forego the story for another time, he summoned forth his knife to slash at one of the moon butterfly girl's legs.

She was pretty sure the mirror dude was trying to distract her with gossip instead of telling her about any serious business. Luckily, there was a lesson that Nectaris had learned a long time ago.

Gossip was always serious business.

Like, kissing boys, for example? That was a classic Faustite move. Well, she assumed it was. He loved marrying boys. She knew that for sure. She remembered talking to Fulgurite and Albite about how many rings he'd been collecting, and she didn't think he left the kissing part out of that equation.

She didn't really understand it. Nectaris was a Certified Boy Kisser, and she didn't see the appeal of that dude, like, at all.

Still, she put the fiance tidbit in with whatever other evidence she had about what was going on, and nodded at the dark haired boy. She didn't put the staff down, but she did smile. "Aww, congratulations," she said. "How long have you known each other?"

She would've been ready to have an actual conversation, except for the fact that she saw Possibly-Faustite moving out of the corner of her eye. Like, trying to backstab her.

Does it count as backstabbing if it's stabbing in the leg? part of her brain asked. You don't backstab people in the leg, a smaller, mostly-buried part of her brain tried to tell her.If you have a clear shot like that, go for something more important. Although, it had surprised her enough that she didn't dodge properly, and she hissed as she felt the warmth trickling down her thigh, so she guessed it had done something.

"Okay then," she said, without so much of the usual bubbliness. "By that logic, I guess that means you're asking for this!"

She brought the staff around as she whirled in a two handed swing, going for the ribs.

There was a certain attentiveness in the fairy knight's expression and posture that had Hybris thinking she was the exact right person to get out of fighting against via juicy chatter. "Oh we met at the start of the..."

And then there was Destiny City's Stabbiest Fiancé, being a sneaky guy. Tsk. Well, he wasn't going to deny his boy a fight. It was enrichment. And, to be overly honest, particularly attractive.

While she busied herself with...oh! Did she get him in the ribs? Well, that was also a little satisfying, now wasn't it? He'd definitely be kneading some biscuits there later. For now, Hybris made his way over to the girl, threw his capelet over her, then passed a hand over his face. A perfect copy of the goth teen stood there, then laid down in front of her, further blocking the view and almost fully taking her place as the victim.

After a few moments, the teen boy stumbled close, finally recovering enough from that hit to realize that he should probably get out of there, and maybe also get his girl out of there as well. Seeing his wavering figure through fluttering eyelashes and sleep heavy eyes, 'the girl' groaned in weariness and confusion.

"Baby, what's going on?"

Something shimmered through him, and then he was falling. "Baby?!" She screamed. "What...what happened?" Then the sobs began.

He'd cut her, and Cadmium thought that should be deep enough that she couldn't follow them very quickly. Not so much that she would lay there and die, in case she had a horde of friends that wanted to back her butterfly a** up and avenge her, but enough that she couldn't catch up to them. That was all they needed to go find themselves a mirror —

And as he drew back and dismissed his knife, as he started to run toward his boy, his entire center of gravity shifted to the left against his will, his bones shifted uneasily under his skin, and his feet struggled to find purchase at the right angle. He hit the floor with the shock of it numbing his palms under the gloves, and his next breath came with such a sudden and poignant sharp in his right side that he stammered out a staccato groan. Rolled by a ******** butterfly princess. He murmured his expletives to himself as he dragged his body upright once more, stumbling under the pain of what must have been a bone bruise, or a crack, or a break. He couldn't know for certain.

"Whatever," he wheezed at her. "Won't be catching up now."

It would've been the perfect time to run. Adrenaline would see him through another minute or two, long enough for him and his boy to tuck around a corner and disappear. Enough to find a mirror. Enough to play victims if they needed, and beg for help about this big bad butterfly moon b***h that tried to beat him to death.

But when he turned around, searching for his beautiful boy in all his violet whimsy, he saw nothing. Cadmium thought he felt him — like a shelter, like a cool veil draped about him — but the only figures were the boy, the girl, and the butterfly b***h. That ******** menace of a boy must have ditched. Must've left his aura to linger, or what Cadmium felt was his own wishful thinking.

Orange eyes never left her. Silently he extended a hand out, palm up as if to halt her by will alone, as he limped backward with a few poorly concealed winces. "Couple months," he answered, "or a lifetime."

Maybe this was the part that made her a bad soldier. He held a hand out to stop her, and she stopped.

If it was Faustite, she should have kept going. She had the advantage. He was the worst. He needed to die. Pretty much everyone agreed with that, including Nectaris.

She hesitated.

It wasn't 'cause she was feeling merciful, exactly. It wasn't like the instincts were kicking in where she wanted to save him. She didn't.

It was half curiosity that got her, and half, like, not wanting to act too decisively in a situation where she didn't have all the information. 'Cause, like, either something had happened with Faustite's youma, or the Negaverse had figured out how to swap people's faces, and both of those were like, weird and new situations.

Wait. The mirror senshi. Where did he go? Nikki whipped her head around suddenly, 'cause mystery situation or not, she was still outnumbered and she didn't feel like getting backstabbed again. Her leg was starting to throb. She could run, but not easily.

So, she lowered her moon staff. She tapped it on the ground, and the image of the full moon appeared softly glowing at her feet.

"Okay, we'll try this again," she said. "Drop your tricks and leave these guys alone, 'kay?"

Magic - Nectaris channels her magic by touching her staff to the ground. An image of a glowing full moon forms on the ground beneath her, 15 feet in diameter, and the area is filled with moonlight. Order characters only feel the moonlight as a slight hopeful omen, but to Chaos characters, the light gives the sensation of painful second degree burns across their entire body. This stops immediately if they go out of range of the spell, and the pain is purely illusory. This magic never leaves lasting damage. Nectaris can channel for 45 seconds.

Teary eyes met Cadmium's and...oh. Oh yes. His boy was looking at a total stranger that he already had a vaguely bad impression of, not the fiancée who he had a very specific bad impression of. Hybris couldn't wait to make fun of him for it after they got away from the fairy knight. Who also glanced over but was also too occupied to focus on the helpless and hapless civilians.

Opening her mouth to call out even louder, she choked for a second as the ground began to glow gently, and her body began to burn fiercely. Hybris had forgotten that while knights and senshi didn't have magic that lopped off limbs, they certainly did frequently have torture at their fingertips. His eyes fluttered close for a moment, and tried to focus on his ribs and the phantom of pain, sweet with worry and care, they still held. He passed another hand over his face to refresh the illusion.

One gasping breath, then another, tear spilling out so much more sincerely now, the "teen girl" yelled out, voice carrying clearly over the area, "Help him! He's not breathing! Please!"

The Captain coughed up a grunt that deteriorated into a strained groan between the effigy of the moon and the ribs that girl just cracked. Felt as though his skin grew too tight, raw and rashed, blistered. He backed away farther, dipping away from the curvature of the moon that lay on the ground. If she wanted those couple of no-name shitheads, they were all hers; getting ******** up about it wasn't worth much without his boy as an audience. Getting ******** up about it wasn't worth anything at all if his boy withheld all doting sympathy for it ******** sake," Cadmium hissed to himself. "You want those useless ********? They're all yours." They weren't worth the effort. And as far as he could tell? Hybris was likely long gone. Likely reclined in his bed with a glass of wine in hand.

Deciding he was quite done with this Knight, Cadmium turned back and started for a quieter, emptier cross-street, even if he limped with every other step. Even if that teenaged b***h yelled about how her boyfriend stopped breathing. He thought it fortuitous; these virtue-signaling Knights were far more likely to go saving the worthless and innocent over pursuing him.

Cadmium would be long gone by the time that Knight found help for him. Long gone and traded out for Eles, who would be halfway to an urgent care, he was sure.

Well, the magic was working. The Captain was running off, and Nectaris, for better or worse, decided not to change him. She went to go check on the civilians, instead.

Not breathing was bad. Not breathing meant dead, probably, and that always sucked, and it was also kinda weird 'cause she didn't think he'd gotten hit that hard, and she hadn't seen a starseed or anything. She could get an ambulance and everything, though, at least make sure the girl didn't have to deal with it on her own.

"Okay, okay," she said, jogging over. She wasn't the best at the whole soothing thing, but she was trying, and she hated when this happened.

Oh, but he was breathing. She saw that hint of chest movement and suddenly it felt like she could breathe again, too. "He's alive," she said. "It's okay. I mean, he got hit pretty hard, but we'll get the doctors and everything," she turned over her shoulder to look at the girl.

Wait.

Two girls?

Her eyes narrowed. "Okay," she said. "You got me. Now go away."

So he'd been left. Which was, of course, the plan. Distract the fairy knight so his boy can ******** off. Without a backwards glance. Or looking around at all. Hm! Interesting!

Once the Knight's attention was firmly on the situation at hand, his little trick quickly fell apart and he didn't bother trying to pick up its pieces. Hands out in an okay I give up gesture, the goth girl stood up with a grateful smile. "Sorry about the knife, he's a bit of a menace, isn't he?" As if the captain was the one who also drained the civilians into unconsciousness as well.

Slowly moving in the direction Cadmium has limped off in, Hybris passed a hand over the his goth girl face and Nectaris would find herself facing a perfect copy of herself. Giving her a little finger wave, Nectaris heard herself happily chirrup, "I'm going to go mess with him a bit, thanks for understanding!"

And then she turned and began trotting off.
