Rowan nodded, eyes scanning the paper beneath Eles’ pen. The two of them were in agreement there. Hatred at least required energy, required the person to care about something, even if it burned them more deeply than the object of their antipathy.

She opened the door, passing through into the welcome relief of the air-conditioned interior.

The young woman smiled slightly at the mention of the boy he lived with, whatever their relationship was, it clearly meant a lot to him. Whatever wounds Eles carried, she hoped that was “Is that who the gift is going to be for?” It was sweet, she thought, “I understand that, being a full-time artist is definitely not the life for everyone. Though dancing is an art too. One I am very bad at.” A sheepish look crossed her face with the admission. “The frames and knives are this way,” she gestured toward one aisle, “I think the inks are around there somewhere too.”

Rowan’s romantic nature warmed at the young man’s clear feelings for his companion, glad to know that there was something going right in this city. The world could do with more sweet moments, sincere gestures, and from the look on his face his sincerity in the matter seemed to be beyond doubt. She imagined that the object of Eles’ affection would cherish his gift, whatever form it took.

Grabbing her own supplies as they walked through the store, she mused on her own work, the people she’d create for. The people she’d fight for. She hoped that Eles’ boy would do the same for him.

The invitation surprised her, the accompanying barb drawing a soft laugh as she read. Of course, she hadn’t expected anything from the man they’d helped, but the sentiment was funny nonetheless. “That sounds really nice, thank you.” She smiled, maybe she could buy him a pastry or something. It only seemed fair. After all, the unconscious man hadn’t given him any snacks.
