Arawn scoffed, but took his hand away from Laon’s eyes so he could reach out for Remarque’s hand. The scrunched up expression on his face at the ridiculousness of Remarque’s offer faded a bit as he continued.
They helped save Earth.
It seemed like it had all been a dream. Like everything was going to work out in the end, no matter what.
But they had worked hard to prepare. They helped collect energy. Others helped with the shields. They saw the ballista with their own eyes. Saw what it did to hold the serpent in place while they tried to imprison it once more.
“It’s never going to stop, is it?” he asked with a quiet frown. “If one thing attacked Earth, then something else will. What if we’re not prepared, next time?”

Remarque saw something click into place on Arawn’s face, or maybe he just got tired of scowling like that. A somber air descended over them. Remarque let it linger, but only briefly.
“There’s a lot of things we don’t know. This is the first time something like this has attacked Earth. So I don’t know what that means for us, but I think this was the best trial run we could have hoped for. We won,” he shrugged. “We learned. We took a crash course and came out on top.”
Did it mean that they’d have the same luck in the future? No, but now they had a direction to work towards.
“Why don’t you let me worry about those things tonight? You two just worry about each other. As long as you’re taking care of each other, everything’s going to be fine.”
Remarque didn’t know that for sure but he sounded confident about it.
Laon swallowed the lump in his throat but he nodded. There was very little he could actually do right now but he didn’t need his eyesight to take care of Arawn. It would have helped! But he was going to pull his own weight. Arawn already had so much to juggle, he didn’t need to try and balance Laon, too.
Laon let himself be carried but he was not committed to helplessness. Selfishly, he was glad to be in Arawn’s arms. He was just also determined not to be a burden.

Arawn frowned, but his shoulders sagged a bit with acceptance. Maybe Remarque was right. They just needed to figure things out as they were thrown at them.
“Okay,” he agreed, noting how Laon nodded. He knew Laon was probably struggling about not being able to do much at that moment. There was a strange tickle in the back of his brain that suggested maybe Laon didn’t trust he’d be able to do much to help, anyway.
“Remarque,” he said after a moment, but shuffled his feet awkwardly. He couldn’t bring himself to look the man in the eye for a few long moments but when he finally did, he nodded.
“Thank you. I mean it.” He was still working at the whole trusting thing, but so far… Remarque had shown them that there were people who could take care of them and not expect anything in return.
