It was Eles's turn to feel smug, and he cast Hybris a knowing look once that poorly constructed cover started to crack. It was a decidedly satisfying revenge, hearing him belt out such infectious laughter like that. Properly out of his control. Now he knew what it felt like when Eles was sitting on that exam chair, talking to Nurse Orah, and Malory swept them both up in a completely preposterous story.

Slouching against the pillow pile, Eles carded his uninjured hand through the wefts free of his diadem. He drew them out to the tips where his fingers would turn and wrap the strands like silk on a loom.

Don't you think, though? The bunch of bugs you ran away from — you said that was his youma. His pet. You didn't see him anywhere. Still have all your hair, too.

Sounds like he wouldn't let go of whatever you did to him. Wouldn't let you get away with just bugs and a full head of hair. Not when he could — I don't know — scalp you.

When the laughter finally mellowed and softened into a final little huff, Hybris took in the other boy's reasoning and admitted, "Fair enough. And well, he wasn't so mean the next time we met, but everybody was just too busy at the time to be bullying little mirror senshi like me. There was a whole..." he gave a broad, vague gesture. "World eating snake monster from space thing."

With a wan smile and accommodating tilt of the head, Hybris went on, "It was called the Calamitous Hallow, and it almost destroyed the world, except some people stopped it. Though it did kill me before they managed to pull that off." The sigh that followed was extremely put upon, even though it was his own poor impulses and curiosity that were at fault. If he'd stayed put, he likely wouldn't have even gotten his uniform dirty.

"It was interesting, to be unmade so thoroughly, and remade piece by piece. And I got to see something...extraordinary." And here his voice took on a dreamy, besotted air. "I'd be willing to die again if I knew I'd return to it."

It took a bit, for him to return to the matter at hand, and he gave a small shrug. "Maybe he died there too. There were a lot of people dying without a body left behind." Thinking for a second he scowled, "That youma was ******** around with me." And he scowled further as he tried not to smile, a little charmed despite the offense.

Hybris's talk about an apocalyptic event involving a world-eating snake monster was so far beyond Eles's capacity to adequately process that he could only stare distantly at the boy. He was saying words, yes, and he knew the individual meanings of each of the words, but when put together, his mind simply shut down. World-eating snake monster, yes. Almost destroyed the world, okay.

You… Died? So you got reborn, then? If people were constantly recycling, then why the hell was there even a funeral industry? What an absolute scam. Small wonder Malory had no respect for graves.

For the moment, Faustite was all but forgotten. The youma was forgotten. The hand that had carded through Hybris's hair slumped around the boy's shoulders instead. With his injured hand, he signed, What did you see?

Eles was fast losing patience with all this stringing along.

"Not as neat and tidy as you. More of a resurrection, really." And here he turned his head to give the other a little n** at his neck. "Once I was dead, and then I was not."

Hybris had thought and daydreamed quite a bit about what he'd seen, so the words trickled out smoothly, almost like a prayer. "The Dark Star is massive and broken. Crowned with crystal, haloed in pure light and violet power, a great gaping maw awaits within its cracked surface, near obscured by its shifting veil of lightning. It doesn't belong here, and wherever it is, nothing else is allowed to remain."

A sigh, and then, "I think it would consume me, but maybe also crush me down into something beautiful, perfect, and nothing at all."

The n** earned a small gasp, a bloom of gooseflesh, and a fist at the back of Hybris's head that tugged on his hair. Eles still wanted to be able to think thoughts, though he wasn't certain he'd be able to for much longer. Exhaustion had firmly burrowed into him, made its home, and Eles doubted that Hybris could give energy as freely as he could take it. Seemed like some kind of scam, maybe a pyramid scheme. Was the Dark Mirror a multi-level marketing ploy, convincing senshi to get energy for it because it wasn't quite sated? And all they got for it was a s**t house with a s**t floor plan that never settled?

Eles almost felt bad for Hybris. Almost. But he still looked immaculate in that outfit and seemed like he was having fun. Who was using who, then?

What was it like? To die, I mean. Hybris was conscious of it. Wasn't afraid of it. Seemed like he almost liked it. But was that due to the inherent melodrama or the actual quality and state of dying?

He fell still for the description. The boy sounded so taken with it — this desolate, destructive force. Whatever it was, it sounded surreal. It sounded ineffable. It sounded —

an incomprehensible darkness, wreathed in crystal, as if dressed in the universe's capacity of starseeds

His body tensed. I need a pen, he signed urgently.

"I thought I'd hate it," Hybris admitted as Eles continued to slide his ******** up and curious fingers under his surface, letting the few honest parts leak out and breathe for a bit. "I like being a body, you know? But I didn't, and it was too fast to be painful. Too fast to be scared."

The rapid signing had Hybris turning to get a good look, to pick out any signs of another attack, but this was different. And as he plucked a pen out of subspace, Hybris felt a sudden and intense relief. How long had he been talking about himself?

Too long by far.

With a flourish, he handed the pen to Eles, curious to see what happened next.

Ever a showoff. Eles couldn't help his smile; delight never yielded to his want to be annoyed at such trifles. It didn't make any sense. Why would he want to appear stern and serious, anyway? Eles had no particular impetus toward seeming severe. Strange that it so tried to make itself a baseline for him.

Eles tried not to think about how the pen simply appeared; he didn't need the distraction. He had an image in mind, and after reaching across Hybris to grab the nearest book (despite that there were clearly books closer to Eles than that), he opened it to its dedication page without so much as a glance at the cover. If he had, perhaps he would have noticed how well it unintentionally suited their conversation. However, the page had enough space for what he needed, so he rolled the paperback cover and copyright page over to press against the back of the book. Bending his knees, his thighs became a makeshift easel.

Eles spaced only a moment to decide on its composition. His hand perched near the back of the pen as if intending to use his elbow as the nidus for the initial sketch. Then, heedless of the existing text, he began with the first strokes of an image.

Perhaps it looked like someone's impression of Hybris's description at first. Something large and implicitly round in the center of the page, some vague squiggles to denote the location of some crystals. A second, smaller circle as a placeholder for the maw. But as that image resolved, particularly as Eles's hand shifted closer and closer to the tip of the pen and his hatching grew tighter or looser for its various shades, the picture no longer looked like an interpretation. The Dark Star, there, perceived as well as the human mind could comprehend it.

So Eles handed the pen — and the book — back to Hybris. Then —

"Where black stars hang in the heavens; where the shadows of men's thoughts lengthen in the afternoon."

The book was As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner.

Hybris never minded graffiti in books, they were an addition rather than a defacement in his consideration. And Eles's choice was so very appropriate. Craning his neck to watch, it quickly became clear that he'd been inspired by the description of the Dark Star. Skillful, he noted as the it took on something that was almost a direct glimpse into what he'd witnessed.

No, not almost.

"You were there," Hybris breathed out as the details and the...feeling, oppressive, consuming and grand emerged. Which meant he'd died there. Opening up his mouth to voice his guess, Hybris paused.

Do you ever see me without him?

"You were there," he repeated, and that you couldn't possibly be the boy in front of him. But magic was real, now wasn't it?

Eles's response, signed with his damaged hand, was noncommittal. I guess so.

He knew what it looked like, but couldn't say why. Or how. Or who he might've been, if anyone at all. Maybe, for one night only, the whole world dreamed of the same place. A portent to all.

Are you sure no one else saw it? Just the people who were there? Had he looked for chat rooms discussing such an anomaly, art of it, any discourse about it? Hybris seemed so taken with it, so certain it was real. Was it? Or were they both trying to convince themselves it was?

Letting out a breath he hadn't known he'd been holding, Hybris patted his chest. When had his heartrate picked up so much? That's right, there were quite a few people there. Hundreds.

"We were in a special, temporary arena out in space. Yes, literally out in space," before Eles could ask. "And while we...they were fighting the Hallow, it rent dimensional tears in its wake. I don't think anything could even reach the Dark Star without something like that carving a path." He shook is head, "You were there. So! You were a senshi, or a knight, or an agent of chaos...or a cat." And a smile finally crossed his features that had been increasingly pensive. "You had power."

Eles could have been part of any faction, save the Mirror, who lost no one but himself. "It's a lead?" He looked at the other boy with a certain hope. You don't have to be Faustite, who could be anywhere and anybody else.

Eles lofted his brows at the boy. He was quite passionate, quite convinced, about this one. That no one else could have been there, that it wasn't possible, that Eles shouldn't know what the Dark Star looked like unless he was part of the hundreds fighting in a realm beyond human understanding. Eles wanted to find a way to disagree, but his want was exactly that and nothing more. He had no evidence to argue against it.

And the idea of being magical in some manner, of having power — while unnerving, he didn't altogether dislike it. If cats were magical creatures, he wouldn't have minded being one. Those wretched bastards got away with murder. Frequently.

There has to be some way to test that, he signed. You said starseeds were like a constant, right? Is there some way to check mine?

With everything else strange and improbable that Eles had met while falling down the rabbit hole of a new existence, it shouldn't have been too much a surprise when Hybris sighed, "We're going to have to find a talking cat."
