Betoto plopped down again, elbowing him playfully. “Admit it. You’d be bored without me. Just you and your tragic thoughts and questionable survival skills.” She leaned back on her hands, eyes closing briefly. “Honestly though… I’m glad we traveled. Even if my soul’s 90% sand now.”

Orin huffed. “Fine. You’re entertaining. In the same way a loose roof tile is entertaining during a storm.” But he nudged her shoulder gently. “We’ll visit Tale soon. I’ll bring a fan. And backup sandals.”

She cracked one eye open and smirked. “You’ll need them. And maybe a notebook for all the names you’ll forget.” Then, after a pause, more softly: “Thanks for sticking around. Even when I’m awkward or homesick or ranting about fish stew again.”

“Hey,” Orin said, “it’s only fair. I’m awkward, grumpy, and terrible at expressing sincere feelings, so between the two of us, we’re basically unstoppable.” He stretched his legs and let out a contented sigh. “Besides, someone’s gotta make sure you don’t marry a sea sponge.”

Betoto laughed, full and bright. “As if I could ever settle for someone who doesn’t insult me at least three times a day.” She bumped his knee with hers. “Let’s go find some shade. I’ll try not to trip into another spring.” “Can’t wait,” he muttered, already standing. “Betoto versus the terrain: round fifty-six.”
