During the trip, Brian read quite a bit of information on Iron Island. It was quite interesting to find that all of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh's iron supply was provided by Iron Island at one point, at least, until the supply began to dry up. Reading that Roark and Byron, two of the Gym Leaders in Sinnoh, and father and son, if Brian remembered correctly, trained on the island now wasn't all that surprising, especially since Byron was a Steel-type trainer. Ooh, finding out about the local legend sparked an interest in Brian's explorative nature; he'd have to ask around about that, and see if he could possibly find it. Granted, if it wasn't possible to find it, then that was fine, but he couldn't just leave it without trying.

He was so caught up in reading that he didn't immediately notice they'd docked until he smelled earth and dirt, which he knew weren't on the ship. Looking around, he could see the miners getting ready to disembark, and he did the same, closing the information he'd been reading and walking out onto the deck and walking down the ramp to the dock. He was about to walk off to go try and find Riley when Eldritch gave him a warning about the local Pokemon. "Thanks for the heads-up," he said, shaking the man's hand. "I'll make sure not to rile any of them, but just in case, it might be a good idea to have one of my own out." Once he was on the island proper, he let Lu out of her ball, the Lucario immediately picking up on the fact they weren't there for a vacation. "Alright, Lu, let's see if we can find someone who can direct us to Riley," he said.

Brian would no doubt head off in the direction the miners went in, figuring it was a good place to start. That direction would lead him to a small building, modest in size and appearance with numerous mining tools leaning up against the side of the building. Above the door hung a sign which read, 'Aur* Mining C**poration Est. 2*1*'. A few letters and numbers were worn away by time and weather. Looks like this place had seen better days.

The trainer would approach the building behind a miner who held the door open for him as they entered themselves, assuming that Brian intended to go in as well. On the inside Brian would find himself in a small dingy office that looked as clean as they could possibly get it at this point, the walls stained with dirt and soot. He'd note the rows of chairs for sitting which were almost all filled by miners and then the desk at the far side of the office with an elderly woman sitting behind it typing away at an ancient computer. The old lady would look up from the screen as Brian entered and would glance at him from above her glasses. Not recognizing him she would let out a loud throat clearing sound and waved at him to approach.

"Name please." She'd ask Brian as soon as he approached the table, proceeding to type on her keyboard again. Once Brian gave her his name she would ignore anything else he said after that and asked another question. "Prior mining experience?" She thought he was here for a job, he'd need to correct her.

Not finding many people nearby besides miners, Brian decided to follow them and see if anyone could give him directions. One of the miners was kind enough to hold the door for him, and he gave a nod of thanks before walking inside. There wasn't much here, but he could see a layer of dirt and soot covering the walls. There were very few open chairs, and as he looked around, he heard a noise, turning to see an elderly woman sitting behind a desk. She was waving him over, so he obeyed, not able to get a word out before she asked his name. "Brian Adams," he said. He went to ask about Riley, but he was cut off, ignored at the moment. When she asked if he had any prior mining experience, he realized that she thought he was there for a job. "Apologies, my lady, I'm not here for work," he said. "I'm looking for Riley Arlon. I'm supposed to be training under him for the next week."

The woman stopped typing suddenly and raised an eyebrow at Brian as she name dropped her employer, saying nothing as she tried to look behind Brian as if this were some kind of joke but when she realized there was no one or nothing else she sighed and turned her attention back to Brian. "I see. Please have a seat." She said, motioning to the chairs.

Brian would be left to sit with the rest of the miners for a good fifteen minutes or more before something finally happened, the door behind the receptionist opening up and a blue suited black haired man stepped out holding a matching blue hat, too much of a gentleman to wear it indoors. The man would leaning over towards his secretary and the two would whisper before he stood up again and looked towards the gathered men and said. "Brian?" He called out.

Brian could see the woman didn't believe him, but thankfully, she didn't question it. When she told him to have a seat, he obeyed, finding an open seat not too far away. While he waited, he wondered what kind of training he would have to do. He was willing to do whatever was asked of him; he wanted to prove that he was worth training. He didn't know how long he'd sat there when he heard a door open, and he looked up to see a man in a blue suit walk out. He was holding his hat, something Brian found odd but didn't comment on. When the man called his name, he stood and walked forward. "I'm Brian," he said, meeting the man's gaze.

"Ah! Hello, mister Adams. Your leader, a mister Sub, told me to be expecting you. I hope you found the island just fine." Riley said, extending his right hand for Brian to take and shake. Once their handshake ended the man would turn towards his office and gesture for him to head towards the open door and go into his office. "Right this way, if you don't mind. We have a few things to talk about." Once Brian entered the office Riley would follow after and shut the door.

Inside Brian would the office small but very nicely furnished with hand carved wooden chairs and a beautiful wooden desk. Among the oddities on the shelves were little iron statues of various Pokemon, particularly of the Pokemon Lucario, as well as beautiful blue gemstones. The most noteworthy piece in this room was the massive painting on the wall behind the now seated Riley, a painting of a man that looked very similar to Riley but in much older clothes standing alongside a Lucario. The picture looked old but man was that person a spitting image of Riley.

"Please, have a seat." Riley offered Brian to sit.

Brian shook the offered hand with a smile. "I did, thank ye," he said. He followed as Riley headed back to his office, and he could see various knickknacks lining the shelves. The metal statues caught his eye, the craftsmanship different from anything he'd seen before. The gemstones were interesting, as well, but what really caught his attention was the portrait of a man that looked almost exactly like Riley. Brian felt like he'd seen this man, or at least a painting similar to this one before, though where, he couldn't remember. Riley's voice brought him out of his thoughts, and he took the offered chair. "Thank ye for agreeing to see me," he said. "Ye mentioned we have some things to discuss?" Better to cut right to the chase than beat around the bush.

"Yes, we do." Riley said with a nod as he rested his hands on the desk in front of him. "Tell me, why does learning to harness your latent Fighting Channeling abilities appeal to you? For what purpose do you seek out this power?" He asked Brian, a stern look on his face. "And another question, if you would permit me, are you aware of anyone else in your family possessing the gift? And to add onto that question where are you native to? Is that also where your family originates?"

Brian listened as Riley asked him why he wanted to harness his latent Channeling abilities. The first thing that came to mind was Lily, but he knew that wouldn't be a good enough answer. Then his parents came to mind, followed by his Pokemon. "I want to be able to protect those that can't protect themselves," he answered finally. It was the most honest answer the he could say at the moment, and he was hoping it would be enough to sway Riley. Hearing the next few questions, however, had him pausing again. The first was a question he didn't have an answer to, but the last two? He could answer those.

"I'm unaware if anyone in my family having the gift," he answered. "Of course, I've not really looked into my family history, so there might be some in the past that have had it. As for where I'm native to, it's Littleroot Town in Hoenn, where my parents currently reside. They moved there from somewhere in northern Kanto, if I remember correctly."

"Good answer." Riley said with a smile, wasting no further time as he got up and put his hat on. "That's all I needed. We can go onto the next step. Please, follow me." The man said as he walked around the desk and to the door, opening it up and stepping through. He would greet his receptionist and inform her that he would be heading to the mines and if needed to contact him on his Poketch. With that done he continued for the front door of the office, giving the waiting miners a wave before he exited, expecting Brian to follow.

As they made their way to the mines Riley would speak further to Brian. "Tell me, what Fighting Pokemon do you currently possess? In total." He asked, kicking a rock at one point as they journey down the beaten dirt path. There was little to see here on this island, what with almost all the vegetation gone, just the ocean around them and the pile of rocks they stood on.

In a short amount of time they would make it to the mines, a big open cave now standing in front of them with miners and machinery coming in and all. Brian could spot from the outside the string of lights on the inside that illuminated said mines. This is where they would be training? With what? All this activity certainly scared away all the wild Pokemon, right? "Tell me, Brian, you're not afraid of the dark or small spaces, are you?"

Brian was relived when Riley accepted his answer. He got up and followed the man out of the office, wondering just where in the mines they were going. The trip was uneventful, save for Riley asking about his Pokemon. "Currently, Lu, my Lucario, is my only Fighting-type," he said. "I have three that will become Fighting-types once they evolve, however." Reaching the cave that began the mines, he could see lights stretching inside, and he had to wonder just what Riley had in mind. "No, I have no issues with either of those," he said, turning to RIley in response to the other man's questions. Were they training in the mines, then? That seemed to be the case, since they were here.

"I see, well it's going to be dark and cramped at points in the mine so I thought it might be prudent to ask before we entered. But since you have no issue...let's get to it." Riley said as he entered the mines through the cave entrance.

On the inside Brian would immediately see piles of steel beams, metal drums, and the results of mining, the entire 'room' square and clearly carved out. Looking ahead Brian could see two paths to take in the form of opposite staircases, both going down with one of the left and one on the right. Riley would turn to Brian and gesture towards them. "Pick one, Brian." He said, putting his arms behind his back. "But before you do, release your Lucario for me. I want you both to decide which way to go, together."

"I've been in cramped spaces before, but probably nothing like what's in here," Brian said. He followed Riley into the mines, noting the steel beams and other mining items laying off to one side. It was obvious this room had been carved from the rock. Two different staircases on opposite sides of the room caught his attention, making him wonder what lay along each path. Hmm, he would have to try and explore them both at some point, but right now, Riley was instructing him to choose a single path. Which one to choose, then? Riley's next statement got a nod from him, and he pulled Lu's ball from his belt and tossed it into the air, releasing the Lucario from inside.

She blinked in the dim light, turning to Brian as if asking what he needed her for before she spotted Riley. "This is Riley," he said, and the man in blue received a respectful nod from Lu. "He's our teacher for now. What path do ye want us to take?" He indicated the two stairways with a nod, and Lu looked at each of them. Neither gave any indication of what kind of challenges they held, but that was part of the fun of it, right? There wasn't anything spectacular about either staircase, but Lu knew that Brian had already chosen a path. He was just waiting to see if she would choose the same one. She pointed at the path on the right with a slight growl, and Brian gave a smile. "Lu has always been able to tell what I'm thinking," he said, nodding at Riley. "We'll take the path on the right."
PostPosted: Sun May 11, 2025 3:07 pm

Riley smile as Brian makes his decision, giving a little nod as he began to walk forward and towards the right. "Good choice. The left side is a dead end after all." He said, revealing that this was some kind of test. But for what Brian had no way of knowing. Regardless the man would make his way for the right most stairs and began to descend into the dimly light floor below.

At the bottom of the staircase Brian and Riley would find himself in a dim branching hallway carved out in the earth, more construction material lying around but the bulbs lighting their path slightly dimmer. "Again, we have a decision to make, mister Brian. And again I want you to make a decision alongside your Pokemon but this time I want you two to say nothing to each other. Close your eyes and try and paint a mental picture of the environment we are currently in. Tell me if you sense anything in either direction." Riley instructed them. "Once you make a decision I want you, Brian, to lead the way."

The two pathways before them were one going straight ahead and the other south. How they were suppose to sense anything wasn't clear, with what senses were they suppose to do this? Regardless they had to decide, together.

If they went straight they would come up to a dead any, where they were clearly mining and finding nothing...besides a very angry Onix that they thought was just a pile of rocks. They'd need to fight. (1)

If they went south the path would end up turning east and then coming up to a small set of stairs, this clearly being the intended path. Why not just tell him which way to go? (2)

(Generate a number 1-2 to decide which path they decide to take. The result effects the future story.)

Hearing that the left path was a dead end made Brian glance at the other stairway in curiosity. He and Lu followed as Riley headed for the right staircase and began to descend. Once at the bottom, Brian could dimly make out another branching pathway. Hmm, which way to go now? The two exchanged a glance when Riley said they were to once again choose a path together, but to say nothing to the other. Each could see the trust in the other's eyes, each knowing they had each other's backs. Closing his eyes, Brian attempted to do what Riley had instructed, trying to paint a mental picture of where they were. At first, he wasn't able to feel anything besides the damp air inside the mines, but there was something there, just out of reach. What was that? There was a faint rumble, one that he couldn't exactly hear, but one he could faintly feel. Cutting out sight allowed him to feel more, hear more, than he would normally be able to.

Lu, however, had only a little issue. She'd never done anything like this before, but this was an innate ability, right? Surely this was something she should be good at. Closing her eyes, the Lucario calmed her breathing, allowing the noises of the cave to reach her ears. There were the normal sounds of cave Pokemon and miners that she could hear, but there was something else, something that shouldn't be there. She could feel a hint of anger coming from directly ahead of them, and as she listened, the faint roar of an Onix reached her ears. Her eyes snapped open at the same time Brian's did, and as one, both pointed to the southern path. "There's something in the tunnel ahead," Brian said, looking at Riley. "I can't hear anything, but I can feel a very faint rumble coming from ahead of us."
