DEATH TO THIS BOOK!!!
I read this book in the seventh grade. My English teacher (who'm i still have as a senior) is obsessed with similes and metaphors and symbolism. she kept staying stuff like "Pink symbolizes good, and this character blushed, so his face was pink for just this one moment, so he was a good person for just that one moment." JUST SHOOT ME BEFORE MAKING ME RE-READ THAT BOOK!!!

You see most the books that were required reading for class, like "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Of Mice and Men" would have been much better had we not had to over analize it so much. Some analization I could have handled but not three months worth.

I absolutely loved Lord of the Flies. I'm not ultra-deep in symbolism, but I was astounded by the symbolism in this book. After I read it, I read some thesis paper that promoted the opinion that Simon symbolized Jesus or a prophet in some way. I never really understood that....I see him as philosophical and perhaps spiritual, but I don't see the prophet connection....
I personally enjoyed the classroom discussion on this book, because it gave me a lot more insight on the book. I'm not very strong on biblical allusions, but someone pointed out the allusion to the Garden of Eden: the boys at first considered the island to be a paradise, and later, became frightened of a shadowy monster that the littluns described as a snake. I thought that was pretty interesting.

sisko66002 Only part of it. I hated this book and barely forced myself to read it because it was for school. I will never reread this book.

Great book, truly thought out and wonderfully executed. The whole book is a microcosm of the world we live in, it's complete commentary on Golding's time. But whether or not you like it doesn't make it bad, theres a reason why it's considered so great, Golding won the Noble Prize for Literature, so let's say he is certainly an author worth reading. Maybe after a few years you'll like it more, ended up happening to a few people I know who also had to read it. Similarly I'm certain now being where I am reading anything from I had to read in high school would now seem completely different.
But I do suggest reading it and seeing it for what it is. Another thing to remember is, suck it up and read it anyway. I'll sound like an old man, but college taught me, there's a reason things are assigned and that if you don't want to do it, tough luck....
The film adaptation I saw was really bad, I remember the rock literally bouncing off Piggy's head and Rambo being mentioned...

I personally liked this book. I had to read it twice though because I forgot what happened and needed to read it for class. gonk Just the same, I thought it was a great book, however as I just finished a report on it I'm not really in the mood to discuss it anymore at the moment so I'll leave it at that.

...birds creep over tin roofs, like criminals with tap shoes... I Hear ThunderI read it for school ages ago (english), and didnt understand what was so great about it, watched the movie, and then i read it in Swedish a few years later, and still didn't understand what the fuzz was about :b
But i admit, its a good book, and i can understand it must be fascinating reading it when you are toying with the idea of being stranded on a desert island. I think i will read this one to my kids one day, when pirates, treasures and adventures on islands are on their mind X3 Hope i don't scare the poor thing to badly XD
But Theres No Rain ...stain the glass with windows, extortionate and cold stare...
