Julian’s eyes flitted up to meet Luke’s eyes for a second and he looked like he might have said something more, but he was distracted by the boisterous laughter coming from the kid only a few feet away.
“I won’t get sick,” he promised. “It isn’t any trouble, um, to want to make you something you like?”
Julian kicked his feet a little under the table and then crossed his ankles. “You’re my friend, I’d like to do things for you. Especially because you’re always doing nice things for me, too.”

“Well good. If you do get sick, you know I’ll bring you lots of soup until you feel better, so there. Don’t force me to learn to make chicken noodle soup!” Luke gave another laugh and shook his head, though seemed pleased. “I would love rice krispy treats from you. I’d love anything from you, honestly.”
He shrugged and tried to will his cheeks not to go as warm as they were trying to go, but…he could just blame it on…the sandwich being spicy? Yeah. That would go over well. “Do you wanna do something after school? Maybe go to the mall or something? Or just to dinner?”
It would be a good excuse to exchange notes.

“Um, I know it’s not very exciting but I’m supposed to stop by the store and pick up a few things for dinner on the way home. Evan needs sauerkraut for dinner, and some vegetables and–well, I have a list. But I’ve gotta get it home so he can finish dinner. But if you come with me, could you help me pick out the things I need to make the Rice Krispy treats for you? If I have enough time I might be able to make them tonight.”
…As long as he didn’t get a lot of homework before the end of the day. He already had a bit from earlier, and he had a few chapters he needed to study, but if he moved things around enough he should have time!
Besides, Luke had offered to bring him chicken noodle soup!
A little smile tugged at the corner of Julian’s lips. “...I don’t think you have to make chicken noodle soup if I do get sick. But I can show you my favorite type, it all comes in a can and ready to go.”

“I’d love to come with you!” Luke grinned and put the rest of his sandwich into his mouth, chewing quickly as he thought over the soup comment and the rice krispy comment. “They’re pretty easy to make, and the recipe is on the cereal box…I’ll take a look at the soup that’s your favorite but…I don’t know. It’s good to learn to cook, right? Plus it makes me more desirable, someone who can make their own soup”
Another fry was put into his mouth and he looked thoughtful. “It would be fun to learn to cook. I know I like food well enough.”

Julian couldn’t help but glance at this array of homemade food and he had to admit that it tasted good on its own, but maybe it tasted better because it was made by someone who poured their heart into it. Evan would have cooked for anyone who was hungry but it was his passion and it showed. It wasn't like the others in the house didn’t cook too. He was certain he could taste how much love and care they poured into it, too.
“Have you thought about taking Home Ec? Oh, although I guess you’d be learning more than just cooking.” That might not be as fun. “Does your mom cook? I like to spend time in the kitchen with whoever’s cooking.”
…But Julian also liked to help, so he’d have been happy even if he’d only been washing dishes.
“Someone’s always making something. But you know Evan’s got his food truck so he’s always doing something with food. Maybe I could ask if he could teach us how to make something?”

“I hadn’t thought about it, no…but it is an idea…and do you really think Evan would want to do that? We haven’t really talked or interacted much, but I would love to learn. Mom cooks a little bit, but nothing super fancy, and not super often either.”
To be fair, he had never shown any interest but…he liked food, so it stood to reason he might like to cook it too.
“Yeah. I’d love to go shopping with you tonight. That sounds like it’ll be great. Maybe I can get something for my mom, just because.”
It wouldn’t hurt.

Ever agreeable, Julian nodded. “That sounds nice.” He didn’t know what Luke might get for his mother, or what he had in mind, but he needed to go to the store and was glad for company.
“I can ask Evan if he’d be willing to have you over for a lesson sometime.” Evan might have been a little skittish sometimes but he thrived in the kitchen, and he always seemed like he was trying to learn a new recipe, too. He really hadn’t minded Julian being around so it was easy to be optimistic.
If it was something Luke was passionate about, Evan probably wanted to encourage that in him.

“I’d like that, thank you.” Luke leaned back in his seat and fell quiet, enjoying simply being. The cafeteria wasn’t the best place to simply be but…it was easy to do so with Julian.
Reaching out he finished the rest of his fries and gave a happy sigh. Lunch would be over soon, and then the rest of the day would come…but they would go shopping and it would be great.
Everything was great.
