“Pia-“

A thick eyebrow slowly raised at the prince, the mans lip curled up. Confirmation. The bloke tilted his head back to share a subtle knowing glance between himself and the thinner man, then looked back to the children with a darker look in his eye. Atropia didn’t notice the quiet change. He carefully outreached his hand towards the princess, moving slow as if she were the squirrel and he was trying to keep her from running away. “They are much friendlier in town, my boy. Let us not disappoint your little sister…” His voice trailed off, fading into a sound that resembled a low rumble in a wild cats’ throat right before it pounces on its prey.

Atropia turned her head and looked back at her brother. Although she didn’t recognize the switch in the strangers’ expression, she did notice it on Alastair. He had the same look in his eyes that he had earlier with the guard. Her eyebrows pushed together in confusion; something must be off. Were these bad men? Now she fully turned her body to look up at Alastair, “What’s wro—” Seeing that the opportunity was starting to get away from him, the large man clasped his giant hand around Pia’s arm, then swiftly pulled her up into the air, a devilish grin planted on his face as he twisted her around to look at her.

Pia wiggled in the air, her arm instantly started to hurt from the sudden tug as she twisted and dangled in front of the large man. She screamed, louder than she had ever screamed in her life, then started kicking, but the length of his arm was too long, and she couldn’t reach him. The slender man approached Alastair now, the corner of his smile reaching the edge of his eyes, “Let’s go to town now, boy.” His stance was wide and so was his arms as he steadily walked closer to the prince.

The large man pulled Atropia into him and held her tight, then placed his hand over her mouth. “Stop screaming you little brat!” He snapped, his large hand covering most of her face. Her eyes welled with tears as she tried to move but couldn’t. What was going to happen? Why did they want them? What about the little squirrels? She tried screaming again but her cries were muffled by the palm covering her mouth.

While his skinnier companion dealt with the prince, the brute started heading toward the town, slowly releasing his grip on Pia’s face, “If you’re a good girl you’ll get treats for the wee squirrels. But you cannot scream anymore, okay? You don’t want anything happening to your brother do you…?” His tone was thick with threat, so Atropia complied, “Now, you’re going to walk next to me, okay? Don't even think about running.” He said lowly before pausing to set her down, Pia’s heart pounded, what would happen if she did run? Was Alastair behind them? Her eyes started to burn as tears began to well once more. Her focus shifted to the giant hand that was being held to her, “Hold my hand,” His voice sounded like a growl, it was low and frightening, so the princess listened, and grabbed his finger. Then they were off again, and Pia was terrified.

Alastair couldn't believe that he had allowed them to get into such a situation. He narrowed his eyes at the men as he realized too late what he'd done by saying his sister's name. ' Oh no. Now they know for sure, what are they thinking!?' he snapped his eyes around to his sister as she turned to look at him, and he widened his eyes as he realized what was going to happen. He reached a handout towards her as she asked him what was wrong. " Pia come he--!" he wasn't fast enough. Suddenly his sister was lifted from the ground, and he glared daggers at the men. " Let her go! You bastards, what do you want!?" he tried so hard to focus on Atropia, her screams making him feel a fear that he never wanted to feel ever again. Even as he stepped forward he was stopped by the other man who began to head towards him. He shifted his legs and glared at him with hate in his eyes as he still refused to back up, that would mean leaving his sister and that wasn't going to happen. Not as long as he could fight it. Even the sounds of her struggle seemed to make him falter and even as the slimmer man grabbed his arm and Alastair prepared to flare up his powers he heard the words that scared him even worse. " Cooperate, and she'll be okay, fight us and who knows, she might get hurt." these scums were threatening his sister! He growled low, not quite relaxing his hand but moving it from the position he'd need to spark up his flames. While he didn't resign in his eyes, his shift in hand position gave the man all the heads up he needed. The threat worked. " Good. Now let's go, and don't even think about trying anything funny!" Alastair didn't need to think twice about going with them to keep his sister safe, the man moved his hand onto his shoulder and his grip was almost painful, no doubt thinking it would keep him from fighting back.

Alastair was relieved when she was set down, but he could hear her crying even if she tried not to. He scowled as he tried to think of what he could do to get them out of this. He didn't even know what they wanted! " What do you want with us?" his voice was low and dangerous; despite the situation they found themselves in. He wasn't going to allow himself to be intimidated by them, not when she was depending on him to make sure they stayed safe. The man who had his hand painfully on his shoulder just laughed, shaking his head. " We're smarter than that to tell you anything, just go. Keep moving and don't try anything funny."

The response caused Alastair to growl under his breath, his eyes narrowing up to the man before he flinched at the pain that he felt at the tightening grip on his shoulder causing a popping sound to ring in his ears. He begrudgingly looked forward again, his hand tightening as he looked to his sister who he wanted to reach out towards before he thought twice about it. He opted to instead speak lowly even if it got him scolded by the man holding onto him. " It's fine Pia, you just do as you're told, okay?" eyes flashing a bright green as he glared up at the back of the head of the burly man holding her hand. He should cut off that hand if he had the means but right now, he did not. His hands tightened against his pants as he could hear the beginnings of the town bustle ahead. He knew that he wouldn't have a chance to get them free until they were more in town. However that would be drawing attention to them and honestly his father would be pissed. Although maybe not quite as bad as he was thinking he would be. One could only hope.

“It’s fine Pia, you just do as you’re told, okay?”

Atropia swallowed hard and stared forward, if Alastair was saying it was fine it had to be right? He wouldn’t lie to her. She wanted to turn her head to look back, but as she tried to do so the man who held a death grip her hand tugged her forward, causing her to almost trip over herself. She shivered, maybe Alastair knew them, and that’s why he knew it would be okay. Slowly, she turned her gaze to look at the calloused hand that held hers, then continued to let her eyes wander until she was staring up at the towering brute. His arms were covered in marks, symbols she didn’t recognize cut into him.

He was terrifying to look at.

The mans’ eyes flashed down at her, almost like he could feel her staring at him. This movement made her trip again, but this time she didn’t catch herself and instead fell forward. In this case she was grateful he had been holding her hand because it kept her from falling on her face, the worst thing that happened from her stumbling was scraping her knee. Once again, he grumbled and tugged her up saying something under his breath and pulled her to keep walking. Pia winced in pain her knee was burning. She looked down to see blood start to drip down her leg, which made her stomach twist.

Pia bit her lip to try and stop from crying, but tears trickled down her cheeks. “Sir,” She said in between tiny sobs, “Can we stop? I hurt myself when I tripped…” her voice was shaky, and her heart skipped in fear when he stopped to glare at her. “N-never mind!” His lips turned up into a horrifying smile, curled at the corners, teeth missing, and his eyes were black. Were his eyes always that scary? Squirrels would never like him with eyes like that!

She forced a smile, but her cheeks were red from crying, then with an even smaller voice said, “…I-I’m okay.” Her eyes flicked down to her knee, the blood had seeped into her socks, and it was incredibly uncomfortable. Without saying anything the man shifted his gaze forward and continued marching them toward town. “About a mile to go.” He said with a voice that would haunt her.

When the town came into sight, Pia felt eagerness building up inside of her, maybe here she could scream, and someone would help them. As they crossed the bridge and entered through the stone wall, Atropia looked around. There were townspeople everywhere, and no one looked at them. Not one person turned their head. “Don’t even think about it little Princess.” Like he was reading her mind she held her breath, okay—so she won’t scream then.

Didn’t anyone recognize them? No of course they wouldn’t. Her parents never let them out, her father didn’t want to expose her to the commoners, “for her safety.” This was his fault, she couldn’t help but think. If he had toured the town when she was born like he had done with Alastair maybe they wouldn’t be in this situation. But then again, she looked up at the large man, this man knew who she was and now she was in danger. Pia’s hand felt clammy in his overly warm one as he held it in his fist, tightening his grip as if she was going to dart. Which was honestly a smart move because if she had the chance, she would run as fast as she could. Maybe one of the guards would recognize them and come to help? She looked around again, guards at several entrances but no one had been looking their way—still.

Alastair had to convince himself to be patient, something he had never been good at before. If he acted too soon, he could get her hurt, if he acted too late it wouldn't work. So, he had to get this timing perfect in order to keep his sister out of harm's way. He narrowed his eyes hearing her interaction with the man as he pressed both of his closed fists against his sides. They'd pay for that! As they got closer to the black smith shop that he had gone and visited many times before when he came into town on his own. Surely the townspeople recognized the crown prince and princess, but the men with them were intimidating. Even he was able to recognize and admit that to himself, but that didn't mean that he was going to back down. His green eyes flashed up to the man standing next to him before he smirked. " Hey, catch." just as the man opened his mouth to ask what the boy meant, Alastair reached a handout to the side, catching a spark that he was able to use to start the flames. He had gotten a hold of them, and just recently gotten his second power under control so now would be the time to do it. As the green flames sparked in his palm he shifted his left foot back, so he pushed the man's hands off his shoulders. He had closed his hand and went to hit the man, but he missed although what the man didn't plan for was that Alastair had a plan. He felt the man grab his hand before he flicked a spark down and it caught the hay that was behind him.

Green flames shot up and he took the panic that ensued to actually land the hit on the man, and he collapsed. Now the townspeople definitely knew who he was. It was no secret that he had caused the nursery to catch on fire and was the reason why they couldn't use it anymore. As the man collasped he turned to the other one, moving closer, quickly and his eyes began to glow. " Pia, hold your breath." he said quickly before he spun on his right foot, his left making an impact with the man's stomach. That caused him to let go of his sister's hand and Alastair expected her to either go behind him or run off. Either way she would be out of harm's way. He knew better than to assume though with his little sister being quick to surprise him so as the man collapsed down coughing out from the air leaving his lungs despite him being just a child, he had aimed for a weak point.

In one smooth movement he gently and firmly wrapped his hand around her wrist, pulling her towards him as he wrapped his arm around her, breathing out as a green tint came out with his breath. The man seemed to know what it did, but his poison was still pretty concentrated because he hadn't practiced enough to balance it out yet. The man had still breathed in enough as he began to cough and his face went pale as Alastair stepped back, his bright green, glowing eyes were locked on his. " You...brat!" he reached his hand out and the prince closed one eye as he collapsed forward, landing hard on the ground. He knew that things were over and done with, their father would know they had been in town, but he wasn't about to let her get hurt. With a huff he looked down at her and his eyes slowly returned to normal. " You're okay, right? He didn't hurt you?" he hadn't seen anything, but he also didn't want to take a chance on his sister being hurt. " We should get out of here, I think I just gave us away so we'll have to move fast, hop on." he released her hand and turned, moving his hands out behind him and motioned for her to climb on his back.

The further they got into town, the more helpless Atropia started to feel. Was she going to die? Her knee stung, and no one was there to make it better. Just the terrifying man tugging her along down the path. As they passed the forge, Atropia made eye contact with the blacksmith, his wide eyes tracked them carefully, but he didn’t move. Her lower lip trembled, did no one care?

“Hey, catch.”

Atropia turned just as Alastair’s hand exploded into flames, her heart pounded, he was going to save them, he really did have super powers! Pia felt the large man stop moving as he turned and looked at her brother, his gaze darkening in anger. Pia could feel the fear leave her body as flames engulfed the hay behind them, her eyes shifted up to the man as Alastair spoke to her, and right before she took a big breath, she grinned, “You really messed up, sir.” Then her cheeks puffed out and she started to hold her breath, moving just as her brother attacked him, freeing her in the process. When he fell to the ground choking on the toxins, Atropia raised her foot behind her, then with as much force as she possibly could, swung it in front of her kicking the man in his side.

When he didn’t react to her kick, Atropia exhaled and furrowed her brows in anger, then lifted her foot back to kick him again, but her brother had other ideas and instead pulled her back to him. She struggled for a moment but the sound of the scary mans voice made her stop and stare as he coughed and struggled to breathe through the poisonous air. She winced as he fell to the ground, “Did you kill him?” Her voice was a mix of excitement and surprise. If he had killed him, they’d be safe but, wouldn’t that mean he would get in trouble? Or maybe he would be okay because he was protecting them.

Atropia watched as his eyes faded back to their normal color, and instead glowed with concern, “Yeah I think I’m okay…” She looked down at her knee, the blood had dried up for the most part, but it still stung. “…Thanks to you!” Pia directed her attention back to her brother and beamed at him, it was clear to her now that no matter what, as long as she was around Alastair, nothing could ever hurt her. She hugged onto his arms, squeezing her eyes shut, it didn’t even occur to her that she had inhaled the toxic air. Thankfully, she wasn’t affected by it like normal people were. It only burned her lungs a little, and shouldn't last.

Alastair presented his back to her, and she smiled as she climbed onto him and wrapped her arms around his neck, “Giddy up, Alastair!” Her heels tapped into his sides softly like she was riding a horse. The events that occurred didn’t settle into her, not yet at least, she didn’t think of the consequences of their presence in the town, or that Alastair might have killed someone. No, she was just glad they were on their way home now, safe and away from the scary men.

“Why did they take us?” She mumbled after a few minutes, keeping a firm grip on the front of his shirt. It was in the back of her mind, never did she think she would get kidnapped, she thought that only happened in the books that she read. She didn’t realize that it could be real—that bad people existed in this world. “…Also,” Pia blinked a few times, realizing she had never actually seen Alastair make fire with his hands before, “How did you do that?” She waved her hands in front of his face before latching onto him again, “With your hands?”

Alastair knew that even if people cared that they had to gauge on if they stood a chance. If he didn't have his powers he certainly wouldn't have had a chance and he knew it. Despite all of his trainings and teachings he was still a boy compared to the men. Even if these men in particular were classless thugs who made a big mistake. As he took them down, he tried to keep it quick for his sister's sake and not wanting to get her hurt. Even as he saw her kicking the man he was surprised but really shouldn't have been. She always moved to her own drum and that was something he respected. " No, he's just paralyzed." Alastair explained before he felt her wrap her arms around him. He wanted to get her out of there especially as the fire was beginning to spread and he knew that he would be pegged for the person who did it. He didn't know of anyone else that could produce fire that created a poisonous smoke. Her arms around him gave him a feeling of warmth in his chest that fighting just didn't do for him, he didn't ever feel this with anyone else and he wanted to keep it that way. He was an independent prince after all! He had to be able to control himself and feeling like he would do anything for someone.... well, that was a feeling he wasn't used to. So, he was content with only having one sibling that he would go so far for. He gave her a hug back and sighed, his powers had dimmed now that he wasn't actively using them. He wanted to get her out of there, and yesterday. So, as he motioned for her to climb onto his back and she made her comment he felt eyes moving over onto him. Oh, yeah, this was going to bite him in the a**.

Atropia's trust in him made him feel better, although he could see the glares that he was getting already for burning up the hay. He wrapped his arms around her legs and tucked her close against his back before he laughed under his breath at her heels digging into his sides although it didn't really bother him. " Of course, Pia." he murmured before he stood up and began to walk away from the town. He chose not to look back as he tried to get as much distance before word got back to his father about what happened. Not only would he be in trouble for dragging Atropia into this, but even more so for using his powers especially when it caused so much conflict that could look bad for his father. Sure, he didn't really care much about how the crown looked but he knew that he probably should at this point. He was always told that he was the king in training no matter how much he disliked the idea. A few minutes passed by before she asked the very question he was worried to answer.

“Why did they take us?”

Alastair exhaled, his arms tightening slightly around her legs in almost an instinctive, protective gesture. " Because we're royalty, I don't know exactly what they wanted, but I wasn't about to find out." he turned his head slightly to look back to her and smiled slightly, not wanting to scare her. " There's a reason we have to sneak out when we do this, father would like to keep us inside to prevent such things from happening." for all the bad his father did, that was one thing he appreciated. Looking ahead again he breathed out and his expression steeled slightly. He didn't know what they wanted, and as much as he did want to torture it out of them, he wasn't about to put Pia through that. Not when she was so scared already. Her hands waving in front of his face had him blinking, thoughts fading as he was pulled back to the present. " Huh? Oh, yeah, you remember the fire when you were younger that burned down part of the castle? That was me." he knew he'd probably get grief for not telling her sooner, that was alright though. " I was told to not say anything until I got it under control, which I have for the most part." that was also what made his actions back there that much more recognizable. His father would hear that and know exactly who was involved.

As they walked through the woods he began to head back to the castle, enough adventuring for one day. When his little sister becomes a target that's when he calls it. He glanced back to her and grinned though. " Now that you know, I can show you what else I can do. I'm getting a hold on it and it's fun. Just have to be careful with breathing in the smoke, apparently that can paralyze people." he personally found it very entertaining, but he had that darker side to him that he knew his sister didn't have. Not right now. Not ever if he could help it.

Royalty. It always came down to that. Why couldn’t they just be treated like normal people. Atropia tightened her grip around her brothers shoulders, clasping her hands together at the top of his chest. A low sigh rumbled through her body in frustration the more her brother continued talking. It wasn’t him who was annoying her; it was everything. Their status. The reasons why their father kept her locked up as much as possible out of the public eye. She knew it was to keep her safe—especially after what just happened—but it still didn’t make her feel better about it. How was she supposed to experience life if it was only behind the palace walls?

Their father was going to lose his mind when he found out about this little adventure.

“Yes…” Pia’s eyes widened as Alastair casually answered her questions, “…That was you?! She leaned back as far as she could while still clutching onto his shoulders to keep from flying backwards at the shocking new revelation. You burnt all of that down?!” At this point she really didn’t care how loud she was because according to her brother, the two bad men were paralyzed, which she was pretty sure meant they couldn’t move anymore. But she would have to look up that word later.

Back to the more important matter at hand, which was the fact she just learned her brother burnt down a massive part of the castle! Clearly, he had it under control now, from what she could see. He dealt with the two bad men without destroying the town so that was good. But on the other hand that did mean their father was absolutely going to hear about their getaway. Pia relaxed once more against Alastairs back, lazily keeping her arms in front of his chest fully relying on him supporting her from her legs. She hadn’t realized until this moment how exhausted she was.

" Now that you know, I can show you what else I can do. I'm getting a hold on it and it's fun. Just have to be careful with breathing in the smoke, apparently that can paralyze people."

Her eyes caught a glimpse of him looking back at her with a big smile, which she mirrored back. Her eyebrows arched as excitement flooded her expression, “Really?!” Pia couldn’t believe it, there was more that he could do? Her smile turned into a toothy grin; he really was like one of those heros she read about in her many books. There was a part of her that wondered if she would ever have abilities like him. Then they could be a duo! Her hands gripped his shirt as she rested her head against the back of his shoulder, “I’ll be careful, it didn’t seem like it hurt me back there though.” She chewed on the inside of her cheek, watching the trees as they passed by, deep in thought. Was it because they were related that it didn’t paralyze her?

With a sudden jolt, Atropia jumped; did she just fall asleep? She blinked slowly, trying to clear her eyes to see where she was—still holding onto Alastair and… oh no, very close to home. That just meant they were about to face their father. Pia tightened her arms, “Do you think father will be mad at us…?” She wasn’t sure how long she was out for, maybe a couple minutes, maybe more. But now they were rapidly approaching, and she felt a knot in her stomach that she really didn’t like, and it wasn’t hunger pains. Atropia didn’t typically get in trouble for these things, but she also didn’t get caught. Half of the time if she did it was servants, and she could charm her way out of it. Maybe if she batted her eyelashes hard enough, she’d be so cute she’d get away with it and then father couldn’t be mad. But then what about Alastair? She couldn’t have him take all the blame. Pia took a deep breath, holding it momentarily before blowing out. Decision made, she would say it was all her fault. Then he couldn’t get in trouble! It would be impossible! Right?

Alastair closed one of his eyes at her exclamation, one thing he wasn't quite used to was her volume control, or lack thereof. He was glad when he felt her hands still holding on though, because the last thing he wanted was her to get hurt after he just caused a scene. He knew that she was a little more sheltered about the risks of royalty and what some people were willing to do to get back at those who were considered at such a level. He wasn't pleased by the way some of the townspeople acted, but then again, he was more outgoing than most of those he knew. A low laugh left him as he continued to walk, his arms tightening ever so slightly around her legs as she leaned back as an extra precaution. " That was me, although I didn't mean to do it." he still remembered the power when it manifested, it was actually terrifying because he didn't know what was going on or why he was not burning. Thankfully he didn't actually kill anyone with that, but he knew there were a few people who got pretty bad burns because of it. While he did feel bad, his father never asked for him to apologize, just to get a handle on it and some training in to make sure he didn't accidentally burn down the castle. Which honestly was fair. He was glad that she didn't mind the realization of what he actually was capable of but because she was his sister he would never let anything happen to her. The only time she'd likely see his powers would be in defense of himself or her, and he was okay with that.

He hummed in thought as he felt her lean more on him and kept walking, although he didn't notice when she began to stare off into space. Why didn't it bother her as much? A quick glance back to her made a slight smile form on his face. No matter what his punishment was for going out he wasn't going to let her get in trouble for it. He could play guilty if needed, although part of him actually was guilty of getting her into trouble. Next time he saw those men he would have to teach them a further lesson when he didn't have his sister to keep safe.

Her sudden jolt jumped him slightly and he exhaled before she had to ask the question he was dreading. He looked ahead to keep her from seeing his expression shift to a darker one. Was he worried about how their father would react? Yeah, he was. But there was no way he was letting her take the fall for any of it. " Probably." the first part of his answer was clipped and short, before he shook his head. " More so with me, I'm sure he knows I sneak out but the fact that I went out with you and we got into trouble it will be worse. But don't worry, Pia. I can handle it." he was less concerned about what they did while they were out because to some degree, he knew that their father could just pay off whoever got upset about the fire. And to be fair, they were being kidnapped. " It'll be alright, I might get scolded, but they were doing something wrong too." as he pointed this out, they made it to the edge of the courtyard they had originally jumped over the wall.

He peeked over it before glancing back to her again. " Hold on tight." once he felt her arms and legs tighten, he grabbed the stone, pulling himself up so he was sitting on the broken part of the stone. Almost immediately they were spotted, and he looked over at the servant who ran off. No doubt to tell their father. He frowned but figured as much and shifted his other leg over before dropping down to the ground and again looping his arms under her legs. " We're definitely busted, but it's alright. We had fun, right?" despite the anxiety he got from the situations they found themselves in and the fact that he was likely about to receive a pretty harsh punishment he did have fun.
