Julian smiled still, standing by and fiddling with the hem of his sleeve. It was a new sweater and he was already doing a good job of wearing it out. Another animatronic made a noise and this time he winced at the shrill scream.
“Who does think of these things!” he laughed, and rubbed at his ear.
It took him just a second to collect himself, and he was looking through the costumes again. He didn’t want to give up, he wanted Brooklyn to find the one she’d come here for!
Even if she had already found a cute replacement that she liked.
“Do you like those things, too? The haunted houses and spooky hayrides–the scary stuff? I know a lot of people do, I heard them talking about some at school.”
He liked looking at the Halloween decorations–the bright, cozy lights, the pumpkins, the fall leaves. He was still warming up to the costumes and animatronics, though.

“I’m not sure that I want like…scary stuff? But I don’t mind spooky? If that makes sense. Like…the super scary things, I don’t know. I feel like I’ve seen enough horror in my life. But silly ghosts and pretty witches? Sign me up. If the movie or something is a little creepy, I can handle that…so long as there’s like…a happy ending to it? I saw this one, and like, it was a little creepy? I think it was called something about under the bed? I don’t completely remember but like, I jumped a few times, but the ending was really sweet, and I don’t know…it made the movie okay?”
She hoped it made sense. Brooklyn knew she was being long winded, but. “I don’t want a movie that’s just going to scare me for no reason and then not give me a good resolution…those just. Those are just there for adrenaline junkies who pretend that they like them but…”
Wrinkling her nose at Julian she shrugged. “Do you know anyone who honestly likes being scared?”

Julian nodded along with her, sure that understood what she was talking about, and he smiled to let her know that she’d given a very good description. She liked lighthearted, fun things, with a spooky aesthetic. Like Disney Halloween. He was still sort of learning what that entailed but it wasn’t hard to imagine ‘cute’ but with a festive flair to it.
“Um! I think so. Some of the kids at school,” he explained. He wasn’t sure if they were pretending to like the horror movies, but he wouldn’t disagree that they might have been adrenaline junkies. It wasn’t for him but he wasn’t going to criticize how anyone else enjoyed their life.
“Zac likes horror movies, but I don’t think they really scare him. He had one on the other day and I wasn’t even watching and got spooked. I was only in the living room for a minute and, um–I don’t know what he was watching so this is a bad description, but this scary, um–I don’t know, person?–jumped out of nowhere and I know I froze! It was so surprising, I just forgot how to breathe! My heart was going crazy. But Zac didn’t even flinch. So maybe he’d seen it before? But, well, you know Zac. I don’t know if he actually gets scared.”
Julian laughed, but there was just the slightest color in his cheeks. He knew it was probably embarrassing to get so startled from a movie, but his little smile was still in place. He was okay with laughing at himself.
“I didn’t stay down for very long. Zac doesn’t get a lot of time to relax so I hope he liked the movie.”

Brooklyn nodded and gave a little laugh, shaking her head. “Honestly, I wonder sometimes if Zac feels anything bad. He’s like the master of the poker face.” She hoped that they would be able to go to the zoo again sometime though. She liked Zac. He was strong and always seemed to have it together. It was…inspiring, kind of. And thoughts he would rather die than let him know, she truly did admire his cool.
“I doubt I would have stayed down for long either. I’m glad that you get what I was saying. I hope that we can enjoy some spooky movies later.”
Fun spooky.
“They have candy here too, I think. I’ll grab some of that…do you think Talia would let me stay over tonight?”
They could get started on spooky...and just have some fun. Plus…
It was nice to not be alone. No matter what she said. No matter how brave she acted…well.
It was nice to not be alone.

“I can ask,” Julian said, already pulling out his phone. She had never said no before but he was still afraid that somehow he’d accidentally push his luck or mess something up. It wasn't that he didn’t trust Talia, it was just that he was always afraid of something going wrong, and he didn’t want to hurt or offend her.
But, she liked Brooklyn. She always said she was biased for Lysithea Knights.
Talia would probably be happy to see Brooklyn having fun, and she’d probably want to make sure she was taken care of. There was always extra food and sweets, and it was comfortable and safe.
He texted her quickly but it wasn’t like there was a rush to get an answer; they had plenty to keep them busy here.
Julian was still looking forward to seeing everything else here.
…Well, maybe not the animatronics.
