While Cassidy waited for Elliot and Atticus, he was at least in good company with Lucien. He’d heard that cats had a sixth sense for some things, like weather, or danger, or when someone wasn’t feeling good. And here was Lucien, giving him a perfect little massage.
He breathed a soft sigh of relief and tilted his head back. He was going to give him so many scratches. Just, in a minute. His little paws felt too good right now.
The fact that the two weren’t chatting with him right now meant they were talking about something else together, probably. Quietly, because he couldn’t hear. Cassidy just smiled and sank into the couch with another contented sigh.
Elliot was enthusiastically cleaning, eager to remove the mess and the stress. He crouched down briefly so he could kiss Atticus’ cheek. “I know what you mean,” he reassured. “Let’s play it by ear just a little bit. It’s a lot to take in when you’re not actually part of the war, I don’t want to stress him out. But I do want to ask your parents when they get back, before we say too much of anything.” And Lucien, who had already gone out of his way to give them an out to avoid talking about any of it. “I don’t think we’ll have to be secretive forever. I don’t want him to get recruited by the Negaverse or wind up in trouble. But let’s just take today easy and figure out a plan tonight, does that sound okay?”

Atticus, who was busy starting to get overwhelmed with the thoughts of what could happen if Cassidy knew, or didn’t know, or found out they didn’t tell him anything--
But the kiss to his cheek was quick to snap him out of the whirlwind. It reminded him to breathe, and he looked graciously up at Elliot before quickly scooping up more popcorn.
“Okay, yeah, that’s a good idea. They’ll definitely know what to do,” he nodded, thankful that they had such experienced people to talk to when it came to stuff like this. He was grateful that they trusted him with those secrets. Although he supposed that was a little different since he’d already seen things he probably shouldn’t have.
But if Cassidy--
No, he would think about that later. He quickly scooped up what he could of the popcorn and threw it into the trash. If he wasn’t in a rush to get back to Cassidy, he might have tried to add it to the compost bin in the backyard that would help out with the garden.
With the brooms and dustpan put away, Atticus quickly washed his hands, making room for Elliot next to him at the sink, and then leaned up to press a quick but affectionate kiss on his lips.
“Think we should take the food with us?” he wondered, already deciding to at least take the things that should be refrigerated, like the little meats and cheese for crackers. They could set it on the coffee table instead.

“Yeah, why not?” Elliot smiled. “Why don’t you take Cassidy his plate and I’ll bring the rest in? You already worked so hard to make it, you deserve a few minutes off your feet, anyway. Besides, someone has to keep an eye on Lucien,” he laughed.
He could see both Lucien and Cassidy now but he had faith that Lucien had everything under control.
While he still had Atticus, he took his hand gently.
“It’ll be okay,” he promised. “No matter what happens. Just have fun for now. I still want to see if we can find a way to take him to the Springs, or if there’s anything magical we can do to help. He seems like he’s doing okay, but I can see you worrying.”
Elliot smiled once more, and looked at Atticus softly. Atticus had shed so many tears for Cassidy already, he knew how important this was to him.
“It’ll all work out. We’ll keep him safe. And hopefully not interested in aliens.”

Atticus took hold of Elliot’s hand in return and nodded to his promise that it’ll be okay. They would figure something out, and he would do his best not to worry so much. He couldn’t help it! His friend had been in a horrible car accident!
Of course, he also couldn’t help but laugh at Elliot’s comment about aliens. He was so sweet and always knew how to cheer him up.
“We will,” he agreed with another nod and smile.
Then Atticus leaned close for another kiss, squeezed Elliot’s hand, and then turned to gather up Cassidy’s plate so that Elliot could bring in the rest.
Lucien had made himself quite comfortable across Cassidy’s chest. He was big enough that he could plant his back paws on Cassidy’s thigh to sit, while still stretched up and over his shoulder, where he shifted enough to melt against him, still kneading biscuits wherever he could reach.
His ears suddenly twitched as something alerted him to the backdoor, and he stood, using Cassidy’s shoulder, and the back of the couch, as a perch.
It seemed as though they had another visitor. Absently, Lucien’s tail swished, enough to practically drown Cassidy with a facefull of fur. But that was just a gesture of protection, not hindrance! At least in his mind. Probably not Cassidy’s.
