Marius was clever enough to understand why Celyn had trailed off, and though it sent a spike of pain just behind his eye to think of it, he shrugged. “Well the last Knight didn’t have Sailor Alastor. It won’t be like that.”

Had Percy already met Devyn the last time this had happened? Had it made a difference? Marius knew very little about what they’d already been through together. He’d ask later, when they both got back. Alive and well.

Lukas began hastily penning more, nodding quickly at Madison’s insistence.

Marius sat down shortly after Celyn suggested he was tired, and even if he had suspicions that Celyn was trying to play him, he really didn’t mind conserving his energy. He was making little impact on the map but looked at what Celyn was able to produce, visibly astounded at the combination of Lucien’s technology and Celyn’s recollection.

“If someone were walking, how long do you think it would take for them to get to the vault?” he asked. He didn’t think he’d ever been. Maybe heard of it in passing, but not even with such clarity that he could recall helpful information. Marius glanced at Madison again and briefly wondered what it might take to get him to sit down and breathe for a moment. Before he gave himself a heart attack.

Maybe he could ask Lukas to just send Atrius down here to calm him down.

Celyn was pleased that Marius sat down, and was quick to join him.

“Maybe about ten minutes walking. Well, unless you use a passage that starts just about here, and then comes out on the other side. You wouldn’t have to take as long, but it’s really dark if the walls don’t light up. There’s a breeze that puts out any fires and anything powered by other means gets shorted out by Jupiter’s magnetic field. Or something like that. It might just be magic,” he mumbled, wiggling a little as he considered how few people he knew who could actually use the tunnels because they were always so dark and the lights glowed for very few.

He watched curiously as Dr. Eld continued to pace, and then, after scaring a few people away from a table, ended up dumping everything from his bag onto it, and then started repacking it.

“Is he always like that?” he leaned to Marius, wincing a little when Dr. Eld snapped at someone for looking at him and told them what they could do to themselves instead. “It seems exhausting.”

“Indeed,” Lucien sighed and spared a glance at Lukas, because he would likely know the best way to sedate the doctor without them all getting yelled at for it. He certainly wasn’t going to stick his paw into a bear trap.

“The walls light up for Devyn, so that won’t be an issue,” he shared, only because it seemed like important information in the decision of what parts of the map to draw. Normally he wouldn’t share personal things like that. But he knew for a fact, from Devyn’s mouth, that the lights of Sessrumnir had led him and Percy to safety before.

If the walls had been kind to Marius, he knew they’d probably do anything to guide Devyn. They were probably only so agreeable to him before because whatever magic coursed through the Wonder knew where he was going–and who he was going to get.

“Will he need a map?” he asked, finally looking up from Celyn’s work to watch Madison. He felt guilty; he wished he could offer him more comfort. “If Sessrumnir could guide him, I mean…No offense, but Devyn isn’t…”

Well, there was no sugar-coating it. “He’s not very good with directions.”

He could look at a map and plan a shortcut, but for all the trips he saved time, there were others where he gave himself a lot of trouble.

And if he was already upset and worried about Percy…

Well, it could go either way. He might be focused enough not to fall for any distractions, or he might not be thinking clearly and might make it worse. Another outburst from Madison made Marius look up to make sure that he was okay, but he didn’t look okay. He was far more volatile than normal. It did seem exhausting, though. He was tired just watching him.

“...Dr. Eld is just worried. He cares a lot but he doesn’t like people to know so he tries to push them away. I’ll go over and check on him in a minute,” he said, and shifted like he was already itching to head over. “Are you sure you don’t want to get your hand looked at? I won’t let him be too scary.”

The corner of Lucien’s mouth twitched, a hint of amusement in his eyes, although it didn’t last with how dire the situation was. But it was clear that Marius had indeed spent time around Devyn to know his weaknesses.

“No, perhaps not. However, I do not expect the halls of Sessrumnir to hold any fondness for myself, as we are not fully acquainted. I have traveled there in the past, but the frequent humidity does horrible things to my fur.”

He leaned closer to the map to see what the boys were working on, making a mental note of everything.

“We will not let Devyn go by himself, although I am sure he believes he is enough. I am hoping to use this map to coordinate with Valhalla, once we make contact. If we make contact, although I would not be surprised if Percy’s brother makes it there before we do, due to proximity. To attack Sessrumnir, especially during Percy’s tenure, is truly a death sentence.”

Maybe that wouldn’t bring any comfort to the boys, but he had confidence that if Percy was still alive, that those involved in this attack would be made to thoroughly regret their decisions. How long they would live to regret, was another thing entirely.

Celyn glanced down at his wrist, although he was tempted to hide it. It wasn’t so bad, but if Marius was going to be with him, well… it would be nice if it stopped aching. Not that he knew what could help, but…

“Okay,” he agreed, because if Marius thought Dr. Eld could help, then he would try to not be scared. Not that he was going to get up and go by himself, but if Marius was going to lead the way, he would hide behind him.

Lucien made sense, except for the part where he mentioned fur, but Marius wasn’t focused on that. He was slightly wary when Lucien said others were going to go with Devyn. It was easy to adopt Percy’s faith that Devyn could just fix everything by showing up, but he was equally concerned that too many people would just slow Devyn down.

He already knew he wasn’t going, nor Celyn. Even if he wanted to be there to help, he knew there was nothing he could do right now.

“Will that be okay?” he asked Lucien as he offered a hand to help Celyn up. They already had a fairly detailed map, it would be enough to examine and hopefully keep the Mauvian busy for a few minutes. “If we go see Dr. Eld for just a moment. We can come back and work on this more, but I don’t want Celyn to work untreated.”

…And, honestly, Marius wanted to go check on Madison, too.

“You’re worried we will slow Devyn down,” Lucien guessed, but it really wasn’t difficult when Marius looked the way he did. Besides, they knew what Devyn was capable of doing. Slowing him down would be a detriment to all.

“Think of it as… cleaning up,” he hummed thoughtfully, not sure he needed to explain to Marius and Celyn that anyone Devyn might not have had time to finish off may cause them problems if they were to escape. Perhaps some would be kept alive for interrogation.

“Devyn’s focus will be on getting to Percy. We will handle anything else to keep him from getting side tracked with… other tasks. Go, have Dr. Eld check on you. Calming him down would be good as he will be coming with us.”

And that was likely why he was so on edge, although Lucien didn’t think he needed to say it out loud.

Marius gave him a look, obviously surprised that Lucien had already recruited Dr. Eld. He’d missed that in their exchange, but it made sense. Madison could play a tough game but he probably wanted to make sure Devyn was safe just as much as everyone else.

And he’d worked so hard on keeping Percy alive, he wouldn’t let all that go to waste.

Marius smiled politely and thanked Lucien before he led Celyn to Madison.

“Hey,” he greeted. “...Dr. Eld, can we borrow you for a minute? Just to look at his hands. Please. And I can run and get you more supplies afterwards. And anything else you need.”

He didn’t ask if he was okay, that would have been too obvious–especially with an audience. So instead, Marius just gave Madison his most pathetic, pleading look in a quiet reminder to be nice to Celyn–and himself.

Madison was muttering to himself as he reorganized his bag. He was making a couple notes, and then shuffling through various bags and containers he kept stashed away, deciding that he wanted them in another spot in his bag, so he moved them again.

He didn’t exactly jump when Marius spoke to him, but his reactive glare was quickly softened by Marius’ sad look.

“Oh, stop that!” Madison barked, but his voice was clearly weakened already by the expression Marius used on him, and he didn’t sound as forceful as he normally would have. He clearly didn’t intend on sending Marius away, but he also didn’t want to get flustered over those sad eyes.

He let out a frustrated sigh, and then when he realized Marius would probably scold him for scaring his little Sessrumniran friend.

“Oh, stop that,” he repeated, a bit softer this time and sighed again, in obvious distress but softer still. “Give me your hands. How did you manage to grab him so harshly, that’s not like you. Oh, unless you can’t run either -- I’m just saying that Percy sucks at running so maybe it’s a culture thing, how should I know?” he huffed before they could even speak.

Celyn was already terrified. They were barked at but then the doctor seemed to settle down a bit. Cautiously he held out his hands and winced as Madison turned them this way and that to inspect them, and tried not to pull his hands away when they were being prodded.

“It’s my fault. I wasn’t wearing shoes to run in and. Well, I’m not good with running, either. Marius saved me so it’s really okay.” He was grateful to Marius! He didn’t want him to feel bad. “It’s my fault for being there in the first place. I should have hidden with the others but I heard someone say Percy was going back to his room and I wanted to make sure he had tea or a snack or something since he forgets to eat sometimes.”

Marius had enough on his mind that he didn’t allow himself to be truly pleased at securing a more favorable response from Madison, but he smiled a bit anyway. “I was hurrying. I forgot how strong I was,” Marius explained, but he knew Madison was already well aware of his physical limitations.

He was getting stronger. But he’d also been desperate to get Celyn somewhere safe, and to get help as quickly as possible.

If he was going to leave Percy, he was going to make sure it was worth it. Poor Celyn’s wrist had just taken the brunt of the damage. Madison must have had a lot of faith in Marius’ abilities if he thought he could run well.

It was a work in progress. He was building up his muscles, but his lungs were the biggest thing slowing him down.

“You don’t have to feel bad about any of it,” he insisted to Celyn. “Nobody was expecting this today.” Maybe Sessrumnir would benefit from having some mandatory physical education programs. Maybe Celyn would have been better off if he’d hidden with the rest of them, but for as long as he was here, Marius knew he was safe. “I’m glad you were looking after Percy. I wouldn’t have known about those shortcuts if you hadn’t been there to show me.”

It wasn’t so much Madison’s faith in Marius’s abilities, but more like the lack of faith in Celyn’s. Marius was doing so much better than he had been previously. It was only a matter of time until he was well enough to be considered normal. He would likely never have perfect health, but he would be able to live a long, relatively comfortable life, as long as he didn’t run himself into the ground, or get himself killed.

Madison pulled out some ointment and quickly brushed it over Celyn’s palm before moving to his wrist. He tested it out again with his fingers -- light touches! He wanted to make sure nothing felt like it was out of place or swelling, but it was probably just bruised. He placed a loose wrap around Celyn’s wrist.

“You’ll need to be careful with moving it for a while. It shouldn’t stop you from doing normal activities, but no lifting anything heavy with that hand,” Madison huffed, and then eyed Marius again as if trying to make sure there was nothing else that was ailing him.

Celyn mumbled a polite and quiet thanks when Dr. Eld finished up with his wrist and hand. The ointment he’d put on his palm was cool and soothed the burn, and the light wrap he placed over his wrist also felt like it was cooling. Maybe to help with any swelling and bruising.

“There aren’t too many things for kids to do there when there’s no classes to take,” he shrugged because it was embarrassing and he hoped it wasn’t that big of a deal. “But as long as I stayed inside and away from the springs, I didn’t get in trouble.”

“I suppose it’s probably hard to go outside and play when you’ve got to deal with weather like that all the time.” Marius shrugged, a bit sympathetic. It wasn’t like it was easy to play outside in Villefort but that was for a very different reason. “I’m surprised that Sessrumnir isn’t more accommodating.”

But then, he didn't have to be there when he was a child. He’d shown up ready to learn, eager to consume whatever knowledge he could get his hands on in hopes that he could use it to benefit Villefort. And Alastor in general, but he’d been told to aim small to keep himself grounded.

Marius always had big dreams, though. And the conviction to pursue them. Lofty aspirations were just in his nature, especially now that he’d been told he was supposed to live and see them through.

“I suppose they think running from class to class must be exercise enough.” He was teasing, obviously, but he looked at Madison with gratitude and fondness. “Thank you, Madison. We’re really lucky to have you looking after us. I really appreciate you being here.”

Because, even if neither of them would say it, much less in front of someone else, Marius’ nerves were still very frayed from everything. Truthfully, he hadn’t even given himself the opportunity to let anything come undone and process the reality of the situation.

He’d deal with the emotional backlash of all of this later, but for now it was just much easier to be focused on Percy and Devyn and Celyn–and what they could do for all of them.

“It was!” Celyn quickly defended, but then realized his voice was maybe too loud (despite still being quiet) and lowered it further. “I mean… they have nurseries for parents with kids, and there were a lot of activities for kids to do when I was little. My grandfather was always busy, though. And my parents were always out on their research expeditions. So I had to entertain myself a lot of the time. Oh, but that was mostly before Percy was a Knight,” he added, not wanting Marius to think that he was trying to say anything bad about Percy. He wasn’t! He was just a kid with a lot of energy and wanted to explore and didn’t have anyone to safely do it with.

Madison just rolled his eyes. He had better things to do than listen to this kid talk about his sad life in a perfect little Wonder with its books and lack of war and famine and whatever else could go wrong.

He shrugged at Marius and then waved his hand to dismiss whatever sentiments Marius was voicing.

“Yeah, yeah. Just stop getting hurt,” he huffed and crossed his arms over his chest. “You haven’t heard anything from Atrius or Virgil yet, have you?” Madison then barked across the lobby at Lukas. He was clearly agitated and standing around was doing nothing to help him.

Lukas looked up, slightly alarmed because–no, he hadn’t heard anything from either of them, yet, but he fussed with the papers on his desk like it might make him look busier. He didn’t need to look busy, he was already clearly swamped.

Marius patted Celyn’s arm reassuringly.

“Sorry, I don’t know a lot about Sessrumnir yet. I’m still learning,” he said, in something of an apology. His attention shifted to Madison, though, who was clearly still very stressed and not taking this well. “Madison,” Marius sighed. “It’s been like ten minutes. What are you hoping to hear from them?”

Did he want them there? Did he need someone to ease his nerves, too? Or did he just want to know that they were prepared for Devyn’s arrival?

Marius couldn’t promise that he wasn’t going to get hurt, but he was going to do his best before poor Madison did actually give himself a heart attack. How was his hair not grey with all of this worrying? It must be exhausting.

Celyn also looked at Dr. Eld in alarm when he yelled across the lobby for Lukas, who seemed to always be working so hard, even in the short time since Celyn had met him. He could understand being stressed, but Dr. Eld seemed to be stressing himself out more than necessary.

“Um… I think we should go back and keep working on that map,” Celyn quietly suggested, if only to give Dr. Eld more space. Who was now hissing curses under his breath and looked like he was going to start pacing around again.

“I need more supplies,” he announced and turned to storm off towards one of the nearby hallways, once again making people quickly move out of his way.

“He may always seem volatile like that, but don’t let him fool you. Dr. Eld is a skilled tactician and brilliant field medic,” Lucien offered the two a small smile as he approached after Dr. Eld stormed off.

“Once there’s something to focus on, everything clicks into place. I know you’ve had some experience with him, Marius. There’s a reason why he’s still the most trusted doctor around. Certainly the only one allowed at the Hall and preferred in Arista. Even if people are put off by his usually poor attitude, I don’t think they would trust anyone else with their health.”

Marius sighed heavily and looked over his shoulder as Madison disappeared. “I know. He just makes things so hard for himself.” He doubted Celyn would stick around enough to get to know Madison, and even if he did, he wasn’t sure Madison would lower his walls any time soon.

“But I guess it’s gotten him this far.” He sighed heavily and narrowed his eyes to cut out some of the light. His vision was still a little blurry around the edges, as much from a headache now as it was from just moving around and trying to take in everything at once.

Madison was probably going to get supplies, but he was also probably going to find some quiet, solitary place to let out his frustrations so he could come back a little more level headed.

Marius sank back down into his seat. He picked the pen up again and tried to help, but the more he put into things, the less he had to offer. “He’s worried about me giving him a heart attack but he’s going to give himself one. And who is going to take care of him? No doctor will meet his standards.” Marius didn’t have any proper training; the best he had was shadowing under anyone healthy enough to provide care for the others in Villefort. He’d soaked up everything he could and did his best, but what he could provide for the people of Villefort was miniscule when compared to what Madison could do.

He spent his time now between Sessrumnir, the Hall, and Arista, and while he was often with Atrius to study, he got to spend a bit of time with Madison, too. Maybe he could convince Madison to teach him what he knew so he could try to take care of Madison when he needed a break.
