So there’s not pitch darkness?” Kailani mused with interest after listening. Their own home was built into the cliffs with some natural crystals providing light, but she had never seen glowing creatures before! That would be very cool to see. As usual her expression was bright as she thought about the local flora and fauna, her shyness forgotten in the moment especially since she felt more comfortable with her Makuahine than with most. “I’m sure everyone will be happy to see something like that.

Right?” Nanami agreed before finishing the bracelet and holding it out for Kailani. “Do you like it?” It was the one she had twisted together for her daughter, the silver and blue beads matching the white speckled shells and starfish that she had added in. “That just leaves the others for… extra family.” She realized, seeing that Kailani had already finished two more bracelets while Nanami told her about the caves. Even though she had tried to use the bracelets as a distraction before, the very thought of making them just twisted her stomach into more knots now.

The very feeling only grew whenever there was a sudden knock at the door, Nanami frowning as she placed the bracelet down for Kailani. “Let me get that.” She looked over at her daughter before slowly making her way towards the door and opening it, the Kawena on the other side causing a soft gasp to escape her own lips. “Father?” Nanami looked at her Makuakane with complete shock. That was him, right? The scholar was standing before her in his familiar formal attire, dark hair similar to her own with blue streaks tossed over his shoulder in that braid he always wore to keep his hair from bothering him during work. The kind blue eyes as well…Nanami couldn’t say another word as she simply stared.

Kailani beamed at the bracelet, happy to accept it from her Makuahine until the knocking at the door had her tensing. Who was visiting? Was it someone from the inn coming to check in on them? Either way just the thought of interacting with anyone outside of her family had the youngling pulling back, scooting down in her chair as if that would make her invisible. Though when she dared to peek towards the doorway, the Kawena there made her pause. He looked so familiar somehow even if she didn’t know him. Why was that? Oh! The colors, the way his mouth curved upwards into that awkward smile…it reminded her strongly of her Makuahine. The confirmation from Nanami’s greeting towards the stranger made Kailani blink in surprise. This was her grandfather? He was really here?

Shy as she was, all the youngling could do was stare as her mother stood there as well. Then suddenly the Kawena was waving towards her, Kailani’s cheeks darkened with surprise as she ducked her head down again. Eep! He had spotted her! Now what did they do?

I received your letters.” Began Nanami’s father quietly, his expression hard to read as he studied his daughter. Then the stoic expression broke at the sight of the youngling, the Kawena smiling softly as he waved towards the girl before she ducked down. “I didn’t want to wait and decided to check out the area after some meetings with local healers. I was hoping that you would be here.” He admitted, “It’s been…a long time. You look well.

It has. And I’m doing fine as I expressed in my letters. How…about you?” Nanami replied quietly, her voice threatening to break. She may have had her issues with her mother, but her father had only ever been kind to her when he was home and not away for work. “Do…do you want to come in?” She managed after a moment, taking a step back to allow her father inside.

If that’s acceptable. I know it’s a surprise, but I truly wanted to see you. We’re doing fine, no matter what your Makuahine may say.” He admitted before nodding towards the table. “Is that?

Kailani, our youngest.” Nanami expressed with a small smile before addressing her daughter who was failing in her attempt to hide. “This is your Tutu Kane, your grandfather.” She expressed, trying to sound encouraging even as she tried to process her own shock. “Don’t be afraid. Can you come meet him?” She looked around, trying to calm her own heart as she thought about what to do. “The rest of the family is exploring, but they’ll be back by evening. Would you want a cup of tea and then maybe while Kailani takes a nap we can talk?” It seemed that her trip home was not avoidable any longer, Nanami glancing over her father once more with mixed emotions.

Ever so slowly Kailani came around from the table to approach her grandfather. The youngling stood by her mother’s side, gripping at her skirts as she nodded towards the stranger. “He-hello.” She managed quietly, her expression both intrigued and fearful as she studied the Kawena. She knew that they were going to her Makuahine’s home but she hadn’t been prepared for this!

Don’t worry.” The Kawena smiled warmly towards Kailani. “I hope to get to know you better soon, don’t push yourself if you aren’t comfortable.” Even he could recognize how she was shivering there, the girl trying to be brave despite how skittish she felt. “Tea would be lovely. I want to catch up and it may take some time. Are you okay lending your mother to me?

Kailani simply nodded, her gaze curious even though she wasn’t comfortable enough to ask questions. They would come later when she was more familiar with her grandfather, the girl hoping that their vacation would allow her time to learn more about her Kahi grandparents and home. For now though she was more than ready to pick up her belongings, leaving a bracelet for her grandfather behind as she darted into the bedroom for a nap while her Makuahine spent the rest of the afternoon quietly talking with her father.
