“They’re called youma. They… steal energy. And souls,” he said, although he sounded as though he knew he wasn’t making the most sense. He lifted his hand to his chest and sighed.
“It’s called a starseed, I guess. Your consciousness. Or something,” he said, but still didn’t seem satisfied with his explanation.
“There are worse things than youma. People that control the youma. They feel… bad. They have weapons and can teleport. I don’t know why they want to hurt us but apparently they hate knights, like us. And there are others. Senshi… uh… maybe we should get some hot chocolate or something and talk about this somewhere else,” he made a face as a rat scurried along the wall.
“Oh… Reims,” he introduced, keeping his voice low. “Of Ganymede.”

Dawn’s eyes widened as Riker briefly explained. She got the impression there was a lot more to it than that, but he seemed hesitant to talk too much about it out in the open. Dawn couldn’t say she blamed him. It all sounded so serious, and she’d had no idea!
Still, she couldn’t suppress the little smile that quirked her mouth.
“Well, it’s nice to meet Reims, too,” she whispered.
She seemed to perk up at his suggestion, looking around once more before gently nudging him back out of the alley. The streets were still dark, and mostly empty, almost quiet in this part of the city except for the distant sound of traffic and the occasional bark of a dog.
“Did you want to come to my house?” she asked. “I’m pretty sure we have some hot chocolate, and we can grab something to eat on the way. You can tell me all about everything. I think Mom’ll be out late at some event tonight, but she won’t mind if you’re there. I’ll just tell her I was helping you study and we decided to watch a movie or something.”

Riker stared at her and her cute little smile. His ears burned and he reached up to pat at his hair, hoping it was enough to cover how silly his ears probably looked.
He appreciated that she knew that this was a secret. And he would tell her how important it was to keep it secret from others. He knew he was still pretty new with all of this, but he wanted her to know everything he could tell her. Just in case.
“Oh… uh…” It wasn’t the first time he’d been over to her house, but usually her mom was home. That was fine though. They were just friends. Although he couldn’t ignore the way his heart fluttered stupidly at her offer.
“Okay,” he agreed. Even though the fair didn’t turn out as good as he would have liked, at least he found someone else to share his secret with. And a friend to talk to.
“Thanks, Dawn.”
