Dering’s face was flushed and for a moment it was impossible to tell what emotion he was actually feeling. He had a surprised, worried expression. He was still clutching his lute, but somewhere between swinging it and being lifted, he clutched it tightly to his chest.
A bit scrambled from everything, Dering didn’t jump to celebrate as quickly as Lisse did.
The youma had been so close to the school, was that normal? What if there were more, if other people were in danger, or–
He felt squeamish and like his brain had temporarily shut down. He was a bit paler when he was set back down, and he held the lute like a little shield.
“I didn’t…I didn’t do anything,” he insisted. “That was–that was all you. I think.” Actually, it was a little blurry in his memory right now but Lisse was the more energetic of the two so it made more sense to just trust that he’d done the majority of the work.
He didn’t want Lisse to think he was weird; he desperately wanted his roommate to like him so he summoned a quick smile and forced the knots in his stomach a little deeper.

Lisse hesitated and then let his excitement, his sudden hyper glee, fade slightly. Adrenaline was still coursing through him but he gave Dering a softer smile now. “I think it was both of us, honestly. I’m glad that we weren’t alone in fighting that thing…it was really creepy.”
Hopefully…that would be all right to say, if it wasn’t…well.
“Are you okay? You’re looking a little pale…can…I do anything to help? What do you need?”
He honestly wasn’t sure but…he didn’t want to do the wrong thing and upset Dering…that was the very, very last thing that Lisse ever wanted to do.

Lisse’s drop in enthusiasm registered almost immediately, and Dering forced a quick smile. “I’m okay,” he insisted quickly. “I was just thinking about how that thing could have hurt someone, um. That’s all.”
He rubbed at his arm nervously and shifted positions where he stood as he peered around, as if expecting something else was hiding. “I wonder if you have some sort of sixth sense that told you to go out and patrol. If we weren’t here…”
Maybe someone else would have found it to take care of it before it hurt someone, but…
He shuddered and shook his head. “Sometimes it’s just a lot to think about. Like it’s a little overwhelming. It makes my skin crawl, and it feels like, um. My skin is just stretched too tightly over my bones. Sorry, maybe that sounds weird.” He rubbed at his arm. “It’s a little complicated, I don’t really have the words. But I’m really glad we were here to stop it before anyone got hurt.”

“I mean, maybe! I’m really glad that we were at any rate, and that nobody was hurt.” Lisse hesitated and pointedly did not say the rest of the sentence that he wanted to…that nobody got hurt that they knew of but…oh well. That was simply the pessimist that tried to come out from time to time.
“If it was a sixth sense, I’m glad that we listened to it, even if I don’t think it’s all that…I mean.” He drew in a breath and gave Dering a smile. “I think…we’ve earned dinner, we’ve just killed a whole creature before it could do any harm…I think that definitely deserves a reward for us both…and then maybe we could head back and…”
The Squire gave an exaggerated sigh. “Study some more…ugh.”

Dering blinked at him, maybe perpetually amused at how often he was insisting on feeding him. He wondered if he looked too skinny and that was at least, in some part, responsible for Lisse’s insistence.
“Okay. That sounds like a good plan.” He couldn’t bring himself to protest. He wondered also if Lisse was trying to stretch out how much time he could get out of this break before he went back to studying.
“Food might rejuvenate you. You should get something sweet as a reward,” he suggested. “Since you’re working so hard.” On studying. On fighting evil. On looking after Dering.

Lisse grinned and nodded. “I think I like the way your mind works, Dering. Something sweet would be amazing. I’ll follow your lead when you make such great suggestions all day long!”
He laughed and began walking towards the more populated area of the town, towards a lovely diner that had food, and fantastic desserts.
It was going to be a good night, even with the speedbumps. It was a good night.
