“It’s alright; I prefer that you don’t know me. It makes trying to impress you a lot easier.” Nyko couldn’t help, but to grin. If it were anyone who knew him from a past life he might have to put on airs of wealth, and those who knew him in Belrea already had an idea of an overconfident vocalist. This girl, though? She was just some slip of a thing in a new country trying to make a name for herself. It was like a twisted version of himself and he respected her all the more for it.
“Do you like music, Mina?’

“Of course, I’d find it strange if someone said they didn’t.” She offered a smile. “The music I’ve heard in Matori is different than what I’m used to, but I thought I was really calming. I haven’t heard anything in Oba, though, and I’m not sure what your style is.” While she wasn’t familiar enough with that the types were called Mina knew enough to figure out they had different tones, pitches, meanings, etc. Some vocalists came with a group, but when she’d been hired on she had been told it was just by Nicosia himself.

What is my style? Nyko had never really given much thought to that before. He’d grown up seeing solo vocalists as sort of haunting singers who poured their heart out onto the stage, but the ones he’d seen in Belrea were different. They danced with backup vocalists and the entire set was a grand performance. “I don’t like to sing about sad things. There’s enough of that in the world so a lot of my music is meant for dancing. I like to think that if people come to see me they need a release and if I can help I will.”

“So what you’re saying is that I’ll have to try really hard not to dance while I’m working.” She let out a little laugh. “That’s a beautiful sentiment, though. I only enjoy sad songs if they’re romantic; like someone who lost a lover or had their love leave them for another. Sometimes you just need to feel those emotions, but not at a wedding. I hope everything goes well and the couple can live a long, full life.” After all, that’s why she was being hired, right? Not only to ensure Nicosia’s safety but to make sure the wedding was a happy one.

It was almost sad that he couldn’t tell her the truth. There was no way he could be sure that Mina wouldn’t out them to Dazhiq so most of the details were hidden, but watching her sit there, believing they were going to see two happy people into a wonderful life was painful. Welcome to Oba. Would she even want to work with nobles again after this? Or would it taint her and curb that sweetheart of hers?
“We can certainly hope so.” Nyko reached for a little bell at the edge of his desk and gave it a ring. “Effi will see to it that you have all the information you need and the premium we talked about. I look forward to working with you, Mino’aka.”

“Thank you for the opportunity.”
As Mina made her exit she tried not to look behind her and break any illusion of dignity but she had to. She gave Nyko a tiny little wave, especially now that she was being given a plethora of information by his assistant and struggling to keep up. This was going to the event of a lifetime and it could potentially made her future all at once! She was so excited that it was going to take everything in her not to write to Oly immediately, but she had to stay cool. After. I’ll write him after.
