"So-" Kahukura took a seat across from him and shifted her legs to the side to get comfortable. While some establishments had made accommodations for Aishans and their hybrid kin not everyone had. What few tables would have been tall enough for her to sit with ease had been taken up by the time they made their way around, but as it was Kura was able to get situated with little effort.
"-are you here with someone?" It didn't seem likely that Nok had come all this way on his own. Even when Miio, their server, had come round to drop off some water and get their orders Kura couldn't help wondering why the Yaeli was even here. She didn't want to ask - didn't want to involve herself, more like - but it just...didn't seem right.

Despite a little language barrier, Nok figured he had made his point. Literally. He just pointed at a random item on the menu and prayed for the best. He didn't care what it was that he ate, really. What was important was just eating. He was inspecting the strange fruit slice that was floating in the water intently now. Was this normal here? He was debating reaching in to pluck it out when his hand stopped short and his expression darkened. The mug was pushed back slightly, and a long moment of slow breathing passed. "No," he finally stated. "Didn't mean to be here. Got nabbed by them.. Dretch." He practically spat the name. Curse those monsters... "Stuck alone now. Don't know where home is."

Kahukura's blood ran cold. She lowered her glass, lips still moist from the drink she'd managed to take before he spoke and wrapped her unnerved fingers around the cup. "The Dretch?" She asked incredulously. It was perhaps the loudest she'd gotten in a while, which barely brought her out of the near constant murmur she spoke in. "They're just stories to scare children...Or they were supposed to be."
Her grandmother had used them more than once to force her into training. Threats about horrid, awful beasts that could use their magic to take her away pushed the young hybrid into learning the Elarian basics, but those threats had faded as she got older. After that it had been more about the 'disappointment' she'd become by leaning more into her earthling roots.
But they were real. All of those stories...they were real?! "How did you....How did you get away?"

Nok's gaze flicked up from his mug and did his best to judge what he was seeing. Among his various emotions, there was relief in seeing that Kura seemed to hold no love for the Dretch. "Not just stories. Real and big and.. cold." His gaze started to go distant, but he shook his head roughly to remain in the present. He wasn't there anymore, and that was all that mattered. "Was me and others. We fought and found way out." He bared his teeth slightly with grime victory. "They surprise hunters, and we surprise them that time."

All too quickly the idea of traveling abroad didn't seem like such a grand idea. If such things existed in Jauhar then maybe she should just leave. This place had been strangely mystical before, and now...now she beginning to think that it's alluring glow was just a mask for some darker infection.
I'm glad he got out. She may not have been close with the yaeli, but getting caught like that...No one should have to live through it. "...You said you didn't know how far away from home you were?" Kahukura turned in her chair to pull a well traveled leather satchel into her lap and dig through it's contents. After a few moments she produced a map and unrolled it onto the table. "This is where we are now." She pointed to Jauhar on the map, "-and this is Yael." Then she slowly drug her finger across the parchment to the little isle off the main land.

Nok quirked a brow as Kura dug around in her bag. That looked like a good, sturdy pack, and he was content enough to study it until the map was pulled out. He leaned forward to peer at the map. He'd.. never seen a map like this one before! His eyes followed her fingers, but he couldn't comprehend what he was looking at. At least, not until Yael came up. That tiny shape was the whole of Yael?! He reached out almost hesitantly to compare the drawing of his home to his hand, and used that to measure between the two points. His face went a little pale. "I.. go so far." Before he could fall into a further melancholy, his eyes snapped up to meet Kura's intently. She had gotten here, but not the same way he had! "How do you get here? How long is your trip? Is it easier than looks?"

"You did." Kahukura leaned back with a furrow of brows. There were so many questions she knew she'd never get answers too and yet they still hung in her mind. Why take Nok? What connection did he have with the dretch? Was it because he'd been in the wilderness and easier to prey on? If that were the case why hadn't she been taken or was she next-?
Something in his look caused her spine to stiffen. Almost like a child who'd been caught with their mind wandering. "Uhm, I uh - " She pointed back at the map, but this time to Matori. "I took a ship from Yael to here and then I walked." The hybrid answered lamely. "It took a while to get here and it's easy enough, if you stay on the main road. You just have to watch out for bandits, smugglers, beasts, fast talkers..." Everyone, really. "You could get there faster with coin. You'll definitely have to have something to book passage back to Yael."

Of course his eyes followed every movement of Kahukura's fingers. So she hadn't even come to Jauhar in the first place? She'd come from elsewhere. Walked, even! Maybe it really wouldn't be so bad? His gaze wandered to the rest of Tendaji, It was so big compared to home! Nok's expression went flat as the list of threats went on. "I can handle all them," he assured with quiet confidence. "Except.. coin. Family keeps it safe, so got none with me." He squinted his eyes at the hybrid as though sizing her up again. Did he dare? "You... maybe got spare coin?"

Like you handled the dretch? She very nearly let the question slip, but caught herself. Kura knew Nok would do his best to make it to Yael on his own, of that she had no doubt, but there were so many variants from village to village, let alone nation to nation, that she worried. A strong will would only get him so far.
To his question she demurely shook her head. "I don't. I have enough to cover our meal and that's it." She'd even taken to sleeping outdoors instead of an inn just to scrape by on her travels. It wasn't terrible, but sleep was hard to come by when she was on constant alert. "Uhm, how about a trade? I'm looking for something in Jauhar and if you can help me find it I'll split my earnings with you. It should be enough to get you home."
When she saw the waitress coming back with their meals Kura quickly folded her map back up and slipped it into her satchel.

Enough for the meal? Nok looked down at his hands with a frown. She was willing to spend her minimal coin on food for him? That.. was rather selfless for an Elarian. An Elarian hybrid. It was even more shocking than the decent conversation they'd had at their first meeting, and that alone had thrown him off quite a bit! That is, as long as she was telling him the truth! Oh, he knew how to trade though! He perked up immediately to show Kura she had his attention, glowing eyes. One had to be mindful of possible tricks, but what other choices did he have? "What is you looking for?" The waitress had to clear her throat to get Nok's attention. He leaned back as the plate was set on the table before him, focus temporarily diverted to the foreign meal. He squinted and cautiously pushed his knife into what looked like a thick ball of overcooked meat nestled on a pile of long worms. It wasn't quite what he had imagined; especially for having never seen noodles before. Well... beggars could not be choosers. Still, his gaze rose to watch Kura with a hint of trepidation. Maybe he would let her take the first bite from her own plate...

Kahukura adjusted her position again and this time tried to pull her legs as tight to her body as possible. She wasn't able to do much - thanks to the height of the table - but it made her feel a little less exposed. Her eyes darted toward him, then back at the table and then back to Nok, just below his own gaze. She settled on his nose that way it would give the appearance of eye contact without actually doing it. "It's a gem called The Lunar Pearl. It was taken from a ship in Matori a long time ago and the last time it was seen was in Jauhar." Never mind the fact that most information about the jewel had been regarded as fairytale nonsense. She stuck her fork into the noodles, forgoing the meat entirely, and spun them a little before lifting it to her mouth. The barest hint of a smile took up shop on her face and Kura's posture relaxed.

Nok's eyes flicked between the plate and Kura, waiting with roughly restrained impatience shown through a twitching foot. He really wanted to eat.... Ah! Finally! She seemed happy enough and didn't keel over immediately. Caution was thrown to the wind as he scooped up a big forkful of the strange food and shoveled it into his mouth. What was that flavor? What was that texture?! Ugh, it was weird! But damn it, he couldn't stop himself from swallowing and then shoveling in another bite. It was after the fourth chomp that he cleared his throat long enough for a drink and to speak. " The Lunar Pearl? It will get us coin for a Yael ship? What's it do?"

Was he starving? She'd assumed he had to be hungry, if his earlier behavior was any indication, but this was a level of enthusiasm that she hadn't expected. For a moment Kura paused in her own eating just to watch him, but anytime she suspected he was catching on she'd pick up another bite, even if it was a solitary noodle. "Yes, if we find it we'll have enough to get you home." A few of the other patrons had stopped their own meals to look over, and instead of drawing attention to it she looked down at her plate. "It's a...a very rare gem that's supposed to be able to channel a mage's magic and double the spell's ability, but only during a full moon. So that's...that's why they call it that...The Lunar Pearl." Not that it would have ever been much use to her. No one on her earthling side had magic or at the very least none they would have told her. "Do you think you can do it?"

Nok's brow arched with interest as he listened to the brief tale, a few noodles hanging from his mouth temporarily forgotten. A rare magic gem... That was sure to get him enough money to get home! He'd heard how much these foreign lands love magic. But, to have to crawl all over the strange lands with a hybrid of the worst creatures in existence? Well, she had fed him. He slurped up the hanging noodles noisily and nodded. "I can help. Just need the plan." That was when he noticed they were being observed. Nok locked eyes with one table and bared his teeth in warning; the scarring of his lips giving him an additional snarl. If they were planning to come take his food, he wasn't going to let it happen easily! He pulled the hood further over his face while ducking closer to his plate. "Is pearl easy to hide or big?" Back on topic.

She realized how utterly ridiculous it was to make a plan like this. Nok had tried to kill her once before and that was before his capture. Now that he had a healthy dose of fear thanks to the Dretch what was to stop him from slitting her throat while she slept? He wouldn't even have to put up a fight; she had some training, granted, but Kura wasn't a warrior. She was a survivalist and little more. Maybe I should reconsider...And that's when he started snarling at other table."Now you...." Kahukura sat up a little straighter, gathered her courage and in the loudest whisper she could manage she leaned closer to say, "Y-you stop that. They haven't done anything to you and they won't as long as you quit. We don't need anymore eyes on us than we already have." Did he have to be so....so... feral?"And I'm not sure how big it is I've never seen it, remember?" She grumbled and jabbed a fork into her noodles.
