Julian nodded as Luke spoke but found himself a bit surprised at the offer at the end of his story. “Well–don’t stay for me,” he insisted. “If you can get home, you should. The orchestra might be good but there are programs everywhere. I can get you a list, I still have some from back when I was actually playing the violin.”
He pivoted the subject quickly, like he only remembered that he wasn’t dwelling on it after he’d said as much.
He smiled quickly. “I’d miss you if you left, but I’d want what was best for you. And I don’t think I’ll be here for long. My whole situation is getting sorted out so I think when that clears up, I’ll probably wind up in Meadowview or something. I’m a little surprised I’ve been here for so long,” he admitted, but he still seemed hopeful. “But no matter what school we go to, I know we’ll still be able to talk and hang out. Um, if you want to. Especially because of the whole, you know. Knight thing.”

Luke perked up with the mention of Julian’s violin, though bit back on his remark of saying something that might have offended the other male…they hadn’t really talked much about music, but he still hoped that one day they would be able to play something together. “I would…really appreciate that, yeah. We have a whole half year to figure things out, and the summer besides. Whatever happens, you’re right. We’ll be able to hang out and do things!”
Especially because of the whole Knight thing indeed. That…
It was honestly one of the best surprises he had ever been given. All of the people important to him were in on this…well, not his mom but still. All of the people his age that he cared about…and really, that was enough.
“I hope you’re able to get out and go to Meadowview. That’s where Lena goes, my cousin! She’s a little younger, but not much. A freshman right now.”

“Oh,” Julian nodded. “I was supposed to go to Meadowview.” It’s not like he could have afforded Azure, and he didn’t have good enough grades or skill to sneak in on some sort of program. “I hope we can go together.”
Partly, selfishly, because he didn’t want to try and blend into a new school halfway through his would-be tenure there. It would have been better than Hillworth, at least.
And more than that, if he was going to Meadowview then it meant that he’d get to go home.
His face lit up at the idea, and that coupled with the newest bite of taco sent a wave of relief and hope through him. He was smiling even as he chewed.
“...When do you want to go visit your Wonder? Um, or go camping? I can make sure I’m free.”

Luke looked up in time to see Julian’s face light up, and for a moment, he forgot to breathe and his heart felt as though it had missed a few beats, thumping strangely.
…Oh.
“Ah, y-yeah! I hope so too, that would be amazing, and we could hang out often after school and stuff and just…be real life friends not half prisoners here at Hillworth…”
He swallowed and kept his eyes on Julian for another few moments before turning back to his own plate. “Lets um. Get permission for you to stay with me the weekend after next? Then we can just go up and camp and it’ll be perfect. There won’t be any need to sneak anything, and we can just tell my mom that we’re going camping. Easy peasy.”

Julian didn’t notice anything amiss; his eyes were still downcast, but he didn’t seem like he was upset, and all the nervousness from earlier seemed to have washed away.
It helped that he was tired, and it was enough energy just to stay awake and conscious; he didn’t have extra to spend over thinking or worrying right now. Maybe in the morning, after a good rest.
“That sounds like a good plan,” he decided. Julian, contrary to his enrollment in the school or the fact that he did often sneak out now, did not like to break the rules. It was difficult to be a ‘good kid’ in a ‘bad place’.
…But it’s not like he was doing anything bad when he powered up. He just needed to help keep his friends, and Destiny City, safe.
“I can fill out the form for it. Um, but they’ll probably call your mom, if that’s okay?” He didn’t have a guardian to sign off on it, and he knew that it was sometimes hit or miss whether that meant he got approved to go because someone didn’t care, or got rejected because someone also didn’t care. He was still fairly inexperienced when it came to requesting weekend or overnight trips so he didn’t always know what to expect.
Still, he was hopeful.

“That’s fine, she adores you so she won’t mind at all.” Luke was sure of that fact and stifled a yawn, finally pushing his food to the side and beginning to gather the trash up. It had been…an exciting day, and he was happy with how things had turned out…and now…he had a new ally in the person who had become his best friend.
There was nothing wrong with that, and honestly…the future seemed amazing because of it.
