Qí Yáolán's ear twitched as he looked over Kaifeng, trying not to bristle. It seemed... this Kaifeng was genuinely more respectable than the previous one. He sighed, scrubbing a hand through his hair.

"I would appreciate that," he said quietly. "I know it's not possible to be lain by my wife. You likely wouldn't be able to go to her Wonder. There's a willow tree behind the home side of the house. We got married under it. There would be... best."

He inhaled, shuddering and trying to suppress it. "There's a gardening shed... somewhere. It's not all that close to the home, unfortunately."

Kaifeng nodded as he listened to the bits of backstory that Qí Yáolán saw fit to give him. It wasn’t much, but he couldn’t help empathizing with the guy. Even not knowing what had happened to Xīngyì or his remains, Liánlí-Kaifeng could all too easily imagine how much it had to have hurt Huanxi not to be able to see Xīngyì one last time before his death. To have to live with knowing that, however they’d parted prior to that, it was now retroactively their last slice of time together.

“That sounds lovely, lǎojiàng,” he agreed, raising his hands so he could bow properly once more. “Thank you for being so amenable. Selenga and I will see that lǎojiàng and his son are well taken care of. Wouldn’t be right, as his family and as a Knight of Saturn, for me to do otherwise.”

Departing to return to Selenga’s side, Kaifeng felt like……they could work with this, probably. So, there were different ways of coming into a Knighthood, it seemed. One path where one was reincarnated as Liánlí had been from Xīngyì, and another where one inherited the position from an ancestor. Perhaps Qí Yáolán wasn’t the warmest or the easiest person to get to know, but he had lost everything he loved when Selenga first fell. Who knew what all he had been through before that? If it took some time and patience to get through to him, then……well. It would take some time and patience to get through to him.

(Idly, Kaifeng wondered if Qí Yáolán and Huan-ge would remember each other, and whether or not bringing Huan-ge here would be funny. Probably yes, he felt? They both had very different opinions of Xīngyì, so it felt quite possible that they hadn’t been on good terms before, and Liánlí-Kaifeng would’ve liked to see that interaction personally. But it would also have to be up to Selenga to decide if or when that would happen.)

As he returned to Selenga’s side, Kaifeng knelt beside him. He took a moment to bow his head silently, out of respect for Qí-lǎojiàng and his son. Then, he asked, “How are you feeling, Leng-Leng? Whenever you’re ready, Qí-lǎojiàng has asked to be laid to rest below the willow tree where he and his wife were married.”

Selenga looked up, eyes red and puffy from crying the entire time Kaifeng had been gone. His whole face hurt, now. But... someone had to cry for them. Nobody had been left alive to mourn them, a thousand years ago. He didn't know how much news had traveled, how quickly it might have.

Maybe Qí Yáolán's wife had died not knowing. There was no way to know.

"I'm ready," he said quietly, standing and bowing to the skeletons. "Let's go. I should help... Thank you, Kaifeng. I don't know what I would've done, if I came here alone."
