A girls’ day? The absolute last thing Yona wanted, when she felt so angry at her mother, was to spend time with her. The idea of a day, just for them, was so sweet and wonderful, but in this moment she felt a surge of disgust and anger, unlike anything she’d ever felt.
She didn’t understand why she was so angry. Why it came, like a thundercloud, out of nowhere - a surge of unfairness, so sharp and visceral she…
She cried. Silent, hot tears that felt cool against her flaming cheeks. “No. No, I hate you.” The words came out low, shaking with their ferocity. She wanted to leave, but she felt frozen, shocked by her own words as soon as they tumbled out of her mouth.

Ygraine’s mouth fell open, eyes widening slightly as she stared down at her daughter. A heavy, pregnant beat passed between them, before slowly she set the bag back down on the bench, fingers trembling.
She wanted to reach out to wipe those tears from Yona’s cheeks, kneel down and press their foreheads together, like when they were little. But instead her fingers twitched and formed into a loose fist. “Go to your room, and lay down. I’ll… bring you your breakfast.”
Ygraine didn’t move. It felt… as if leaving, right now, might break something between them irreversibly.

Yona didn’t hate her mom. She didn’t. Ygraine looked like she’d been struck, and a pang of guilt and discomfort shot through the girl. But it felt… it felt GOOD too. Good. I hope you feel as bad as I do, for once-
And just like that, what? “What, am I grounded?” She asked, viciously, crossing her arms.

The little girl she knew would have gasped, covering her mouth at what she’d just said. Would have hugged her leg tightly and murmured a ‘I’m sorry, I love you mama’ against her leg, sniffling.
This girl, on the cusp of being a teenager, just glared with fierce eyes. Ygraine felt her lip tremble. “No. You’re not grounded. But keep your door open.”
She breathed out, then turned and stepped back to the counter, busying herself by retrieving things, from the breakfast she’d made for Zev before he left.

Yona rolled her eyes. Keeping her door open sounded like being grounded. She stomped back to her room, angrily changing back into her night clothes. But… by the time she clambered back into bed, she felt weak and shivery again, the adrenaline of her anger draining out of her, leaving her nauseous.
She didn’t hate her mom. But… she hated living like THIS. For now, Yona was simply too young to understand these conflicted feelings - but for now, her mother seemed like the just recipient for her ire.
Even if she conceded, half asleep under the covers, that she was right. She wouldn’t have been able to do school today, not like this.
