Valerian couldn't even be annoyed by the boy's obvious excitement. As Zev took the book to the table, Valerian trailed along behind him just in case he needed help and to keep him from bumping into anyone else that was walking along in the store. Leaning over Zev, Valerian watched as he looked through the book and then nodded as even he recognized some of the writing there from books he had gotten from wandering merchants over the years. "It is." He acknowledged, nodding when Zev pointed out the book's origins.
"I think so." Valerian peered back at the shelf, trying to see if there was a marker for price on that particular area. Either way he knew he had some spare coin, thanks to Zev's family and his own so it would work out. "I just need to grab one more book on plants and then we can buy these, okay? What about some tea or hot cocoa while we're here? We can sit at one of the tables by the big window with everything."

The boy held his find close to his chest. While his original intent may have been focused on the linguistics of Yael his heart was absolutely full knowing he had a piece of Zena in his hands. His father only ever let them read books about Zena that had been previously read by him, and since Zev didn't think his father had an eye for aerial combat this was a special find.
"...Do I get to pick? Whether I have tea or hot cocoa?" There was a waver in his tone, something born from caution that made Zev's toes curl in his boots. "I don't...really like tea." Most of his medicines were mixed with the stuff and no matter what flavors were presented to the boy he just associated the drink with bad memories.

That tone made Valerian pause. He had been expecting something akin to excitement, not hesitation with his offer and it hurt to hear such a wavering in a child's voice. "You can have hot cocoa then." He promised with a nod. "I just prefer some tea, but I'll get you the biggest cup of hot cocoa they have. Do you like sweets? Maybe they'll have some cookies or cakes we can pick up as well." Valerian smiled warmly, shifting the books so that he could reach down and gently pat Zev's head. "Let me go ahead and pay for everything."
Guiding Zev towards the counter, Valerian picked out the coins and spoke with the clerk. "They do have cookies or some danishes. Would you like one with that hot cocoa?" He asked the youngling, waiting for a response before confirming with the clerk so that they could head to the tables and settle down for an afternoon of reading and cozy drinks.

The offer helped to smooth over any worries Zev might have had, and the boy nodded. He liked sweets well enough, especially since once of his closest friends brought them over often, and the thought of having some now warmed him up.
"Could I have one of those?" He pointed toward the display case where the sweets were held, and more specifically, toward the butter cookies near it's end. Compared to the others they were far less ostentatious, but Zev liked them the most. They were just as good when he couldn't eat anything as they were when he was ravenous.

"Certainly." Valerian smiled towards Zev before wrapping up their purchases and heading to the table. Soon enough they would have sweets and warm drinks to enjoy with their books. For a busy city it was fairly nice to enjoy a day at a bookstore, after all.
