Cahira raised a hand to cover the laugh that threatened to escape at her brother’s commentary. He was really getting into it today, wasn’t he? She managed to stifle the reaction before simply shaking her head. “I couldn’t resist the allure of a sword, though I’m not the only child in our family who skipped over dancing to pursue something else.” Their eldest siblings had traveled with one becoming an animal researcher and another an artisan, Shierra had her magical studies and then sweet Pynar had decided to pursue his own little dessert shop full of delicious candies. When Omari and Oly came into the picture it made sense that their mother may have been a bit eager to see a dancer finally. It definitely didn’t take her any encouragement to allow her son to ask for training or to follow her around the dance school. Not that others in their family didn’t know how to dance, Cahira had actually learned her mother’s sword dancing but had taken a bit too well with the blade while studying which prompted her own decision to pursue swordsmanship instead. “I suppose you truly were our mother’s miracle child, she probably would have thought she was cursed with misfortune otherwise.” Cahira joked lightly, her grin showing no actual worry since she knew their mother would have loved them regardless of their dancing abilities.

But miracle child or not, you’re not allowed to try to tempt Kayde and Elias with Sulburi.” Cahira protested playfully. “It’s nice and exciting, but too much for everyday life.” Her bright expression turned back towards Elias, the grin on her lips and the subtle nod promising that there would be plenty of weapons to see when they were finished here. If not Cahira then Elias at least would be leaving with a new sword, a souvenir from their first trip into Sulburi together! “We should get this finished quickly, I want to enjoy one of those giant meals. Maybe that restaurant where they bring out the meat and grill it on the hot stone in front of you?” She mused lightly as she motioned for Elias to join her as she trailed behind Omari and Kayde towards the stage. Cahira spotted the display of weapons towards the right of the backdrops, giving them space to work separately from Omari and Kayde but keeping them close enough to speak loudly with each other as necessary.

Looks like the polish is there.” Cahira pointed towards the tan ceramic jars sitting on the display, before grabbing one for herself and holding out one for Elias to take. “We can just use the rags here as well. I’ll take the glaives and you can start with swords? Just dab it lightly, you don’t want it to become slippery and just want to get rid of any noticeable scratches or spots.” They weren’t like actual heavy steel blades, but a mixture of lighter metal that made it easier for the dancers to carry so scratches happened often and it helped to polish the blades like this before big performances.

Kayde 5

"Wherever she got it," the Leaf man answered, his eyes sparkling with the amusement from the conversation, "there might be cause for worry after all. I find I quite like you already, Omari." Bold honesty had always been a strong part of his personality. Why keep how you felt inside, especially when it wasn't anything too nasty or cruel. Which he didn't think this was in the least. He did find he was enjoying the hybrid's banter, his own comebacks slipping off his tongue easily enough in response. He was glad to see Omari had a playful nature of his own. Life was far too short not to find ways to enjoy every moment of it. "Which is not a surprise. I already like most of your family and those I don't, I haven't met, yet." He included Cahira in this, glancing at her with a smile. "I'll try not to blame you for Elias taking up the sword and not dance lessons. I'm sure Elenora has other things in mind, as well. But than I don't have an academy to pass onto the next generation." And that was fine by him, of course. He'd rather his children find their own passions in life instead of feeling as if they needed to chase after their parent's dreams. Or, well, Elka's dream. Kayde enjoyed dancing and performing, though he never would have made much of it had Elka not pushed him to. He never wanted much out of life, while she wanted everything. He was fine following her and helping her to achieve her own goals. That alone made him happy enough.

With a laugh, Kayde shrugged his shoulders, as if to say Well, you heard the lady. "Should you ever need help in the future, I'm sure I could convince her easily to come out." Without many problems, really. All he needed to say was the word "manor" and she'd be signing up before he could lift a finger. He'd always thought of nobles as being far too arrogant and lost in their own worlds to even acknowledge those lower, but ever since meeting Elka and than Shadiya and her family, he was quickly changing his mind. They were all as diverse as any other person in the world. "I'm sure she'd love to see how this side lives. She comes from a very rich family up in Zena."

Giving one last chuckle at Cahira's comments, Kayde followed obediently behind the hybrid. He sized up the job before them, moving closer to the ocean scene to see where the spots were and what the correct color might be when he began mixing. "I can only imagine how difficult it is to run all this." He waved a hand around him, before settling down by the paints, holding a palette in one hand, dipping a few paints onto it and mixing it around with a brush. "As well as having a family the size of yours. Still, must be nice." There was a small wistfulness to his words. Wondering about his past was never something he let himself get too caught up in. Sometimes it was difficult not to when he was around such large families. He hoped to expand his own a little but in the future. It had been a bit lonely growing up and he wanted to make sure his children and their children and so forth would never want for family to help them.

Elias 5

Flexing the fingers of one of his hands, the one that usually held his swords, Elias continued to quietly listen to their conversations. That was something he could relate to. The allure of the sword. He didn't know what it was about them, but he'd felt drawn to them as soon as he could hold a toy sword in his tiny hands when he was a child. At least as soon as he was old enough that his mother didn't worry about him poking his eye out with it. Which, even than, she'd needed a lot of convincing from his father to allow their son to have one. As soon as he had it in his hands, Elias had known that was what his path in life would be. Never once as he grew older did he waver from that. Both parents assumed he might grow out of it, like most kids did their games. Not he. He would have a real sword one day. What would he do with that sword? Well, he was still trying to figure that part out. He knew he didn't like sparring. Getting hurt at it wasn't very fun. Nor did he want to leave home. The thought scared him. So what else was there?

The young hybrid hadn't realized that everyone had picked their jobs while he had been musing. Tempt them with Sulburi? He didn't think he wanted to live here, either. He liked his family's small manor house outside town, but still close enough to the ocean that he could take a dip in it or visit with Minke. This place seemed far too busy for him. Everyone looked to always be on the go. And not in the way that he liked.

The mention of food, though? That he liked. He could feel his mouth start to water at the very thought of it, giving his teacher a little smile to show her he agreed with her comment before following her towards the other side of the stage. He looked at his father once, settling down at the paints, already starting a conversation, and gave a sigh.

"Got it." Grabbing his supplies, Elias sat down with the sword over his knees, what would have been the sharp side facing away from him out of habit. "Your brother seems nice. Easy to forget you're part of a big noble family." Feeling more at ease, he grinned at her.

Is that so?” Omari couldn’t help but to smile as he took it as a compliment. “I suppose we’re off to a good start then.” He agreed, feeling similar even though he was already a bit biased because of the commentary from his mother’s letters about the other family. If there was one person in the family whose judgment he trusted then it would be Shadiya. Cahira on the other hand? She tended to be a little less wary than most of the family when it came to strangers. At least she was safe here even though she was prone to trying to help anyone despite risks. “Hmm…maybe it’s best if you don’t meet everyone, just to keep that good attitude.” He joked lightly, not actually thinking anyone in his family was truly problematic except for one niece who tended to cause a bit of chaos wherever she went.

That definitely was a bit of extra pressure.” Admitted Omari at the academy comment before giving a light shrug. “But I think as long as it goes to someone dedicated to the cause then it may not always be the family taking over. I’d rather it pass to someone who would help it to grow. It would be easier to find someone though if my family didn’t try to keep everyone in Matori.” He shook his head sadly, a smile on his lips telling the truth that he wasn’t that upset about it. “As it is I would gladly accept more help even if it is just for a short trip. There’s another festival after the harvest season which we will be presenting at. I can always save a spot if you both would want to prepare something for it. And is that so? I hope the academy won’t disappoint her when she does eventually visit.” That would give him several months to work with Elka and Kayde, especially if he managed a trip into Matori before then to finally visit his family there instead of having them hassle about how terribly busy he was as of late.

Omari started mixing his own paints, working on trying to get the proper shade of tan for the desert dunes in the backdrop. “It can be a bit much at times, but support and having a foundation already helps.” He admitted after a moment before blinking at the family comment, his hand pausing as he held the brush and thought about it. “Since I was one of the youngest I lucked out by missing some of the chaos.” He nodded towards Cahira with a small smile. “My eldest siblings at the time were old enough to help out so it wasn’t as awful as it could have been, I suppose.” He continued moving the brush, lightly painting across the backdrop so that the tan became more vibrant and even added in a splash of more amber colors to make the sunrise come to life. He was no artist but he had plenty of experience tidying these things up so that it looked decent enough at least. “Do you have a particular idea for this event? I could always go over some dances in the morning if you’d like before the festivities begin.

Cahira blinked at the sudden call out from Kayde, a laugh escaping her a moment later. “I appreciate that!” She returned with a smile. “If anything I think the inspiration was mutual, I didn’t think about lessons until Elias asked for some pointers.” And now here she was trying to patch up an older building so that she could teach others along with Elias. It was fun so far at least! Cahira beamed at the thought, finally understanding more about why her mother and brother enjoyed teaching so much. Swordplay and dancing were just two different topics, that was all. Speaking of that….Cahira looked over at Omari and shook her head playfully. “I know you had good intent with those words, but it does sound like a bit of vanity. You did inherit the academy so I guess you have that talent and dedication. Just don’t let it get to your head~” Which he did have that dedication and skill from what she had witnessed, but it was fun teasing him anyways. She did at least resist teasing him as he offered a spot at the harvest festival, Cahira recognizing how important the event was to him. Instead she blinked at the history, nodding her head. Her mother had mentioned something about that before, hadn’t she? “No wonder your mother is so elegant, that background must have had an influence.” She commented quietly towards Elias, giving the compliment lightly while not pressing further about the history and proceeding to pull out the weapons so that they could polish them.

We’ll be out of here soon enough.” Promised Cahira at the sound of the small sigh, hopeful that her statement was true because she was feeling a bit hungry already. She was imagining the feast that they would have since she was determined to press for her favorite restaurant. Then tomorrow or even this evening they could potentially get to see some of the weapons for the festival, Cahira excited to see what specialty pieces they could discover. “Does he seem that way? Hmm.” She joked lightly before shaking her head at the mention of the nobility background. “I hope so. We never were really sticklers for the whole noble aspect. Mother didn’t even embrace it when she reclaimed her title. She just used it to help build the academy so it was only important in Sulburi when she attended meetings. “She made a face at the memory and reached to grab a sword, the hybrid carefully wiping it with the damp cloth and watching as the polish made the blade shine once more. “I tried attending some of those meetings before but I was too restless. It felt too stifling to act all noble all the time, I’d rather go through my paces a third time for the day. Wouldn’t you?

Kayde 6

Kayde let out a laugh, not really loud but not quiet either. If anyone looked over at him, he paid them little attention. It wasn't like he ever cared about making a little bit of a scene. "I'll keep that in mind," he answered lightly, his smile wide. Truthfully, he hadn't expected to enjoy the hybrid's company as much as he was now. Not that Kayde ever once thought he wouldn't, if he were to judge by what members of the family he had met already. They all seemed like quite a wonderful bunch of people. He'd felt as if his own had been adopted into it, which made him quite happy. It always made him feel guilty that his own children were growing up without knowing a lot of their own family. Not that he could help that, not knowing where he himself came from. A fact that had never once bothered him until having a family of his own.

Swirling the paint around with his paintbrush, Kayde thought a bit on what Omari had said. He had never tried too hard to understand the world Elka had come from. While maybe not quite like this, there had still been expectations put on her from an early age, he knew. Things like always making a good impression on others and always minding her emotions, no matter how she might be feeling, be it happy or angry and anything else in between. It showed in how she carried herself and spoke to those she didn't know well. The walls she was forced to build around herself obvious.

Than of course there was her brother, the real heir to the business. Always at work. Always hopping between Zena and Matori to help branch it out to other countries. The thought of all that pressure was enough to make his own head shake. Kayde instead picked up his paintbrush and splashed some color on a
faded section of dark blue.

"I don't envy you. I find enough to keep myself busy without feeling as if everyone's eyes are on my every move, as well." He shook his head, again, scrapping his brush against the side of his board to clean it a bit before going for a bit of white to touch up some waves. "I know some people do well under the pressure. You seem to. I can't imagine she'd find any fault. She was happy enough with your mother's school. I'm sure she'd be delighted to see this one and participate." Kayde laughed once more, his pale eyes glancing over to where the swordswoman and her attentive student were, but said nothing more about it, his brain focusing on the question asked. He looked from the ocean he was working on to the desert Omari was working on. "Were you thinking of mixing Oba and Matori styles with these backdrops? I don't really know Oban dancing too well, but I have studied Matori over the years. If you were and were willing to show me some, I think I could come up with some ideas. As you say," he added with a teasing smile, "You haven't visited for a while."

Elias 6

Slight embarrassment crept up the teenager's face at the comment that also took him in. He looked away, turning half around to pretend to watch some builders in the corner. Or the one still moving the chairs around. Anything but the teasing that was going on closest to him. Though he knew Kayde never felt disappointment that Elias hadn't grown interested in dancing. Neither did his mother, of which he was very grateful. Both parents were supportive, in their own ways, of his interest in swords. At least his mother tried to be, as paranoid as she usually was that he'd hurt himself. He was careful. He'd always been careful.

He looked back over to see Cahira paying him attention and gave her a smile in return. "Guess you're not the only one with noble blood, huh?" he answered, trying to sound light-hearted despite the bits of pink on his cheeks. Which was jus as strange to think about as it was about her family. He had rich relatives far up north he would never meet. Except for his uncle, who no more behaved like what you'd expect than Cahira did.

"Oh, I...I wasn't trying to imply this was boring!" he answered quickly, shaking his head with enthusiam. "I don't mind cleaning blades. I clean mine all the time." Than he blushed, again, and focused all of his attention for the next few minutes on cleaning, keeping his head down so his hair fell over one side of his face.

"I'm glad mine didn't, either," he finally spoke, raising his head to look once more at his teacher as his hand went through the familiar motion. "It really doesn't sound very fun. So many rules for everything. How does anyone remember?"

Omari flicked extra paint from his brush, pondering over Kayde’s words as he thought about his own feelings on the matter some more. Cahira had teased him, but he truly did appreciate the support even as he tried to process everything lately. “I suppose I do.” He acknowledged thinking about how he had somehow managed to rise up to face the pressure over the last couple of years instead of folding under it. “It keeps life exciting to see what troubles I can face next. Perhaps that’s part of being a performer, enjoying the challenge that the attention can bring. So let’s hope I can keep up so that I won’t disappoint.” Even if sometimes he did prefer a nice moment away from the spotlight to recover on his own before facing the next thing like a break in between dances. He smiled at the compliments and hoped that Kayde was correct that Elka would enjoy her visit to the school here when the time arrived. If things went well this time then why wouldn’t they come visit again in the future? He owed a visit to Matori himself, so eventually they would cross paths either way.

A laugh escaped him at the teasing. “That is very true. I may have forgotten what a true Matori dance looks like.” Omari acknowledged before shaking his head, the smile on his lips showing that he wasn’t upset at all about the return jab on his own words. “The festival is focused on the gods and they’re mixed between Oban and Matori influence so intertwining the dance styles is ideal.” He splashed some more amber paint on the backdrop as he thought about their lineup. “Remind me of the Matori style with some of your dancing, we can make your dance introduction during the tribute towards the ocean goddess, and I can help splash in some Oban influence when we work together in the morning. ” He continued painting for a few moments, finally placing the brush down and taking a step back so that he could study the image of the desert dunes. It looked better than before, Omari deciding that it would work for tomorrow to give them time to wrap up here so that they could explore the city soon enough. “The dances usually begin with the king and queen of gods being introduced and then continue with each dancer representing a god as they recruit the others to help tame the chaos of the world that turned into our civilization.” He explained as he glanced over towards Kayde. “It’s a fairly common story and one that allows a bit of freedom as long as you represent a certain theme with your dancing, such as storms and the ocean for Drach and Ubeli. So there’s no need to stress over a specific style as long as you can portray those feelings.” They would have costumes as well, the thought making Omari glance over towards where a pair of students were frantically working on setting up the outfits that they would have final fittings for tomorrow afternoon before the festivities began.

Cahira only smiled quietly at the reaction from Elias, the hybrid not wanting to risk him melting in the streets with so much flushing. So she kept her teasing comments at bay while working to polish the weapons, the comment about noble blood bringing a soft chuckle to her lips. “Guess not. Who knew?” She mused back lightly as she thought about Elias and his own family’s situation. They didn’t mention it often during training sessions, the pair both more focused on swordplay than anything like etiquette or such. “Everyone comes from different backgrounds and so I just focus on how their swords speak to me.” The truth behind the blade, the expression behind each attack and the feelings each strike conveyed spoke much more to Cahira about a person than any noble discussions would ever reveal. Truly she hated tea gatherings and things like that, it was no joke earlier when she expressed how stifling it felt.

Another laugh at the quick answer, Cahira simply shaking her head as she finished up another blade and placed it in the display. “But you’re not in Sulburi often.” She countered with a grin as she looked at Elias. “I wouldn’t be upset if you felt a bit restless. I like to explore the city myself before going back home to clean my own blades.” She chuckled as she picked up a spear so that she could tighten the leather wrappings around it and work on shining up the spearhead afterwards. “Right? It’s way too many! When I was younger I tried writing down some notes for etiquette rulings on my arm in ink, it took so long to remove the stains since it only smeared against my sleeves. My eldest sister caught me and told me it was better if I didn’t know anything than try to do something like that again.” Another quick wipe on the blade and Cahira caught sight of Omari moving away from his own backdrop, the first sign that they could be free soon. “Looks like we may be getting to that meal soon, after all.” She mused with a grin towards Elias. Just a few more pieces to clean up and then freedom!

Kayde 7

The faded paint on the top of a wave brightened as Kayde applied more white to it, trying to blend it in with the blue below, doing his best to mimic the previous painter. He had taken odd painting jobs before, but nothing quite compared to this. Helping someone paint a room, a house, or even a fence or wall. Never touching up someone else's work. He hoped when he stepped away from it that it would look at least presentable. Just another new skill to his growing list of skills.

"Who wants a dull life?" the Leaf laughed, glancing over at the hybrid for a moment, his brush suspended in the air in front of him. "Just makes the days feel longer." Looking back at his ocean scenery, he focused once more on splashing some more paint on the lower corner. "I like to keep busy myself. But it's nice to relax at the end of the day in the quiet of ones own home." One quick once over of his work showed him he was finished with his touchups. The man wiped his brush as dry as he could on the board he had been using to mix, than put everything down at his feet and sat back, using the rest of his short time to listen to what Omari was saying. "I see." It still struck him as strange to be considered a dancer, when he had started as an acrobat in a traveling show. While he didn't really dislike dancing and found it similar in ways to what he had done before, he had always assumed he would be walking tightropes and doing tumbles for a crowd for the rest of his life. How strange things could suddenly change. "And what part did you have in mind for me?" he couldn't help teasing with a mischievous smile.

As Omari rose, so did Kayde, brushing off his knees and glancing over both their handiworks. He unfortunately had less of a visually artistic eye and was unsure how his looked in comparison. Hopefully everyone would be too enthralled by the dancers to notice any mistakes he might have made. "Not that I have any problems playing something like a wave or even a grain of sand." Unlike Elka, who would most definitely care. "Sounds like fun, though. I will remember and see what I can think up tonight after everything else settles down."

Elias 7

"That is true," the teenager agreed, thinking about his uncle, the only member of his Zenan family he had met. And probably ever would, unless some of his cousins travelled down this way. It seemed his other uncles and aunts were content to remain up in the cold in the same city as the rest of them. The eldest was the only one who ventured away, always on business. What that business was, he hadn't really asked. Something to do with food, he thought. Or maybe that was just up in Zena. Maybe what he was doing down in Matori was something else entirely. Either way, it was also easy to forget his uncle was apart of the same higher class family as his mother, who seemed to care more for her own social standing and presence than she did anything else. "It's nice not everyone from one is stuck up." Even if they all made him nervous regardless, for whatever reason.

The heat returned to Elias' face at Cahira's laugh. He realized he'd said something rather childish. He was almost a man grown, he needed to behave more like it and less like a child who craved praise. "No. Dad only comes here to help out. I don't think he likes Oba too much. At least not for extended periods." Trying to steady his embarrassment, the hybrid focused on the blade in his lap, finishing up and placing it back on the rack with the others. He could easily imagine it shining during the performance as the steel caught the light. He cast a smile over at his teacher, her energy always putting him at ease. "Mom always tries to teach us, but I don't see how it'd be useful." He rose and stretched his muscles, giving a little giggle at the image of a younger Cahira with a sleeve smeared in ink. "I don't think I'd do that. Could imagine me sitting still long enough to write anything?" He glanced over at the two men on the other side, seeing they both were now standing. He looked around him for the next weapon. "And I think mine are done. See? Lots of practice." Okay. Maybe this time he was fishing for praise.

Longer? Shorter sometimes though when fighting a deadline.” Omari joked back, a smile on his face as he looked over everything. Admittedly neither of them were professionals, but in the flickering torch lights used during the evening performances the backdrops would be perfectly fine. “I do miss relaxing and listening to the ocean, sometimes though it was too tempting to stay there all day instead of doing anything when I was younger.” Omari acknowledged before glancing over at the question, a thoughtful look crossing his features. “So how do you feel about storms? I’m thinking that’s a bit more than a grain of sand. I’ll have breakfast served early in the morning and afterwards we can discuss more details.” They would talk over those details later but Omari did hope Kayde would be alright with dancing for the god of storms, the hybrid was confident that the pair of them could come up with a dramatic dance in the morning that would truly wow the crowd and let Kayde show off his skills.

Omari finished putting up the rest of the paint, the hybrid using a damp cloth to wipe off the few splashes of paint that clung to his hands, and then he turned towards his sister and her student. It looked like they had just finished up as well which was perfect. “And right on time. We should get going now, especially if you want to tour some of the city before settling in for a meal.” He had promised a good dinner and they would have one before going back to the manor where he could escort everyone to their guest rooms on the second floor. Omari did truly hope that it would be a good experience for everyone, the hybrid happy to see his sister and have visitors from his mother’s school at his own academy.

I think the whole country would implode if all nobles acted the same.” Joked Cahira, a chuckle of amusement leaving her lips. Imagine how many spats and civil wars there could be! It was already bad enough verbally sparring with those uppity types that did exist! If only her family was more involved with the military and not in the arts then she could have at least challenged a few of those nobles to a true fight. But her maternal family’s roots were more merchant and less army based which was unfortunate for Cahira who loved the thrill of fighting more than anything else. Though it was probably for the best, she was also a bit too free-spirited for the military aspect of things.

Cahira nodded, her expression softening. “Well, I know that my family is grateful that he did venture out this way to help even if the city isn’t to his liking. That’s better for us though, right? I would be sad to lose you to Sulburi.” She acknowledged truthfully, Cahira never hiding her emotions about such matters. “Right? Swinging a blade is much handier in a tough situation.” She agreed before Elias acknowledged he was done, the hybrid glancing over their work and eventually nodding. “You did well, good job.” She praised him with a bright smile, the expression only brightening more as Omari addressed them. “Finally!” The hybrid teased her brother before nudging Elias playfully. “We did our job and now it's time to enjoy the evening with plenty of food!” The perks of helping out Omari when she visited Sulburi was that he always made certain to show his appreciation, Cahira already looking forward to the evening in the city together.
