Zev nodded. "I'll-" And much like before, Zev's speech was cut off by a deep rumbling cough. It was the sort of thing that made the boy's vision blur and the world around him faded out. He was vaguely aware of leaning more onto the windowsill than before, hanging onto the chilled wood as a lifeline, when he eventually got his breathing under control.
Instead of just leaving him tired this time, though, Zev was left with a raspy sort of wheeze. Each breath was a struggle and he had to actively work at just keeping his eyes open.

What was he supposed to do?! Zev was paler now than he'd ever seen him and any worry about getting caught was tossed away! He needed help and fast! "H-hang on! I'm gonna get your dad!"
Why wasn't Zev's father coming to help him, anyway?! Couldn't he hear him? With adrenaline and fear giving Eyvin's hands a tremor, he ran from the window toward the door. He'd only gotten on knock in when a voice from inside, a frantic one, was getting to Zev.

When Zev saw Eyvin running from the window the boy panicked. He was used to the cough and the feeling of breathlessness, even if it was scary. Zev pushed himself up and reached for the table closest to the window, carelessly fumbling around while he coughed until his hand landed on a book. It was the very same that Eyvin would have had - their basic text book, from one of their many classes - but this one had notes from Eyvin and his older brothers.
He didn't think he'd get to see him tomorrow, but he wanted to make sure Eyvin would be okay. So, before his father entered the room, Zev tossed it out the window. Within a moment he was being scooped up and toted off to bed.

One minute he was running for help and the next there was a book slamming down onto the pavement next to him! Eyvin only had a few moments to process it before Zev's papa was picking him up and passing a look to the boy down on the street. Before he could say anything Eyvin hurriedly snatched the tome and ran.
He didn't actually stop running until he got two blocks over at which boy he was the one wheezing. His visit was always at risk of being found out, but in this case he was happy it had been! Zev needed help and he just...Eyvin wished he could have stayed longer, but it just wasn't a possibility.

The boy vaguely remembered his father chastising him for leaving the window open for so long on such a cold day, but he couldn't bring it in him to care. He felt a salve being rubbed onto his chest, the warm touch of his father's magic giving him the spark to breath properly, and within moments Zev was comfortably closing his eyes.
It was a foolish move, that much he knew, but for a few minutes he had fun. And maybe tomorrow, if Eyvin wasn't too scared, he would come back. Hopefully papa would let him in.
