Alice had received a letter a little while before Gryffindor's first game from Momma Kinzlie, informing her that she had passed her WOMBAT exams and was going to be coming to the school to bring Seb the gift of a new broom. Alice squealed when she read that letter. But moreover, it was her job to get Sebby into place so that Momma Kinzlie could give the gift. Alice had to keep that a secret, which would be tough, but it was something she could do. After all, she'd been keeping her feelings for Seb a secret up til this point... When it came the day for the game, Alice had gotten dressed as usual and went to meal to find her best friend. She had to craft an intricate lie to get Sebby to come down to the pitch before the game started so that they could deliver his new gift to him. The entire walk down to the Great Hall, she was working on what she would say, practicing the words in her head and mumbling them out loud so she had everything right. It needed to be a good fib so that Sebby didn't get suspicious about what Alice was up to, but not good as to make other people volunteer to help as well. Nodding, she had the words right in her mind.
When she walked into the Great Hall, the teen scanned the crowd for Seb, spotting him at the Gryffindor table. Walking over to the table, she dropped down beside him and smiled, wishing him a good morning. Now all she had to do was wait for the sign from Mrs Nora that they were in position. And that came soon after, in the form of her patronus, the silvery hummingbirds. Alice reflected for a moment how that was a cool spell and she couldn't wait to learn it herself. Then she nudged Sebby and said, "Hey Sebby, could you help me with something? I need help getting set up in the Announcers' Booth since Nic is playing. He usually helps, but he's gonna be busy. C'mon." She took Seb's hand in hers, not being specific on what she needed help setting up on purpose. Doing her best to keep a silly grin off her face, she led her friend down to the Quidditch Pitch to the place where they were going to meet up. As they walked, she talked about classes and spellwork, making sure to keep the conversation engaging so that he didn't ask what she needed help with, since technically she didn't really need help with anything and she hadn't come up with that part.

Seb was... little more than a ball of anxiety. It was the first Gryffindor game this year, and he was super nervous about letting down his team... house... friends... everyone, really. Heck, even people on other teams were rooting for him! If he failed again... well. He pushed around his breakfast with his fork, dark eyes staring off into the distance as his mind raced. He almost didn't notice when Alice sat beside him! When she wished a good morning, the teen looked startled before offering her some sort of a smile. After that, he sighed, knowing that if anyone knew his feelings, it was her.
A few moments later, Alice asked if he could help set up in the Announcer's Booth. "I guess so. I've never been in there, so I dunno how to actually do stuff." But he figured getting away from the Great Hall for a moment couldn't hurt... even if his anxiety was just going to ramp up once on the pitch. He followed after Alice, talking about their classes and the latest spells they were working on. He didn't have any thought of something being amiss until they got to the Pitch itself. There.... was something - no, someone - different!
"Mama?" Seb squeaked out, looking between Alice and back to his Mama. How was she here?! Was this Mrs Nora's doing?! He sprinted across the pitch, stopping only once he was able to hug the woman. "Hey bub!" The two hugged for a few moments before Kinzlie carefully broke it. They were running low on time! People would show up any second now.
"I wanted to make sure I was here for your big game! I got help from... everyone on the Alley, I think, and I passed the test that lets me in on the magic world. And that means I can be here now too. I told you I'd do anything to watch you play." She gave him a bright grin, ruffling the teen's messy pink hair. "You did! B-but you didn't tell me? Did you tell Alice?! Is there even anything needing done in the booth?!" He laughed as he spoke, excitement overtaking him. Xiang and Nora laughed while Kinzlie shrugged.
"She had to make sure you got here early! But... the big surprise isn't just me being here! I brought you a gift!" She offered out the broom, which had a red and gold bow tied around it. "MAMA! What!?!? Is this the Nimbus? It's the 2030! That's like... the most amazing thing!" He couldn't help the tears of excitement in his eyes as he pulled his Mama back in for a hug. Oh yes. This game was going to be amazing!

Seb was... exhausted. Not physically, of course, but mentally and emotionally. For the third year in a row he felt like a massive disappointment. He felt like he'd ruined not only the reputation of his house, but also all the fun of playing quidditch. After pretending to be okay following the match against Ravenclaw, Seb found himself wandering outside. He just needed to be alone for now. He'd even put a tin of wet food in Zoot's bowl to keep the cat distracted while he wandered away.
This time his feet didn't take him all around and get him lost, but they took him somewhere his brain didn't really want to be. Sighing at the center of the Pitch, Seb debated - and not for the first time - his fate on the team. The teen plopped down in the grass, laying amidst the green as he looked sadly up at the clouds. Quidditch was his favorite activity... or so he thought. Lately even the thought of playing in games just gave him an upset tummy.
He didn't want to quit, to throw away countless hours of practice, both his and the other Seekers... and he really, really didn't want to throw away all the help he'd gotten. How much effort had everyone else put into him, just for him to fail time and again? Honestly, he had a feeling that even if he mustered up the courage to try out again, the rest of the team would ask him to leave. Maybe he could just ask to be on the reserves team? Then he could at least practice with his friends but he wouldn't ruin everyone's spirits anymore. Seb sighed heavily, pushing his glasses up into his hair so he could use the sleeve of his hoodie to wipe away tears he didn't want to fall.

After the game, Alice had been beside her boyfriend and did her best to seem happy but she could tell that something was going on with Seb. She'd only been beside him practically twenty four-seven since they'd become friends before their first year even started. She knew him, probably better than anyone else, except maybe Kinzlie. But even then... she was his girlfriend and maybe, just maybe, she did know him better than his momma. They'd separated so that Sebby could shower after the game and Alice went up to her room to change as well. She had headed down to the Great Hall expecting to find Seb waiting for her, but he hadn't been there. The blonde waited in the Great Hall for a little while, but he still didn't show up. They hadn't made plans to meet there, but she still figured he'd come down to get food. When he hadn't showed up, she found some of their other friends and asked them to tell Seb she was looking for him if he should show up. Then she went out to find him herself. If she was right, he was in his own head again and that wasn't usually a good thing.
She didn't have to wander far, since her little leggies seemed to know exactly where her wayward boyfriend was. Walking down to the pitch, she spotted a figure laying in the grass and just knew that it was Seb. Alice knew she couldn't sneak up on him since he would smell her approaching before anything. And his super hearing... With a little sigh, she walked over to where he was laying on the grass, then plopped down onto him, sitting down on his legs. "You doing that thing again? You know, where you question existence?" A small smile crossed her lips and she tucked her hands into her favorite hoodie which she'd "borrowed" from Seb again. "Wanna talk about it? I am a certified counselor with Healthy Haunts, you know?" Alice tipped her head to the side and gave him a playful smile. Hopefully just being in her presence would help cheer him up, but she knew that it was probably going to take a lot more to get him back in a good mood. His Quidditch playing recently had been really getting him down and Alice couldn't say much to bring him back up.

As his red-rimmed eyes continued staring blankly at the clouds above, Seb could hear someone coming. It didn't take but a second before a soft breeze brought with it the familiar scent of Alice's perfume. She was probably gonna talk to him, which was.... probably needed... and yet, he wasn't sure he wanted to talk. Alice was great for optimism, but not the best when he just wanted to be a sad little guy sometimes. Seb shifted to drape his arm over his eyes, subtly hiding his teary eyes from her view. He huffed softly when she sat on his legs, but he didn't yet acknowledge her.
At her question, Seb shook his head a bit, a frown firmly in place to tell her otherwise. It didn't take long before Alice asked about talking through his problems, since she was a Tàmhas-appointed counselor. He shifted a bit, his arm moving up enough to show his tired eyes. "I... don't know. Everyone's already said everything. It just... doesn't work." His voice broke a bit before he hid his eyes again. Alice was smiling, he knew, but it wasn't a mood he figured he could handle. "I know I shouldn't quit and I know everyone will somehow be even more disappointed in me if I give up.... but..." He groaned loudly, tugging at his messy greenish hair. "You don't have to deal with it like I do. You just have to see 'em looking sad. But I can hear all the tiniest changes in their voice and pulse and-and even their breathing! I can hear their disappointment... a-and I don't think they know I can hear people talking about me either." After overhearing one of his roommates saying they should've kicked him off the team last year, it just extra hurt.

She didn't have to be psychic or a master of mind magic to know that there was a great turmoil raging within her boyfriend. This was even worse than when he was wrestling with his lycanthropy and whatever Groundskeeper Obie said to him had helped with that. But he was struggling and his disease was part of it. He explained that he could hear every intonation change and the murmurs that eluded most people. He could hear the shifts in the way people spoke and all that weighed heavily on his mind. She knew he was struggling with the continued desire to play, especially since he hadn't won a season game. She'd hoped that his win in the scrimmage would have translated to a win in Gryffindor's last game, but Lewis had been just a little faster. Seb was still looking up at the sky and Alice frowned a little. She knew she couldn't really say anything that would make him feel better, since Lewis and Charlotte and pretty much every other player had done their best to encourage him as well. Letting out a little sigh, she laid down on Seb, then took his arms and put them around her so he'd stop tugging on his hair.
"I know that feeling Sebby. You've been trying to hard and I'm really proud of that. I think you've been practicing harder than any of the other Seekers. And it sucks. It really does. Watching you out there... it always makes me smile. Anyone who would be disappointed of the hard work you put in is a stupid head." Alice closed her eyes, listening to Seb's heartbeat and feeling his rhythmic breathing. She wished she could say something that would make Seb happy because she so loved his smile. But sometimes, there just wasn't a magical cure to his woes. Sometimes you just had to ensure them and wait for them to go away on their own. "If you wanted to stop, I wouldn't blame you. Pushing through things like that... it's not easy. But you know I'm always going to be by your side. And all our friends, they'll support you too." She pulled her lip into her mouth and chewed on it for a second, then pushed herself up a little, placing a soft kiss on Sebby's cheek. "Want me to give you some alone time?" Blue eyes searched Seb, hoping that her words had done something to soothe the torrent raging in his heart.

Seb briefly explained his feelings, before he finally looked at Alice as she laid down on top of him and moved his arms. Apparently she didn't like him pulling on his own hair? Then again, it could just be Alice's way of trying to make him feel better. Of course, Seb wasn't really sure if he even wanted to feel better right now. Sometimes he just had to let his feelings play out. Alice began saying she knew how he felt, that he'd been practicing harder than the other Seekers... but also that she was proud of him. She continued saying that his playing made her smile and that anyone who would be disappointed was stupid. "It's not... it's not even that they're just upset with me! It's... even if it wasn't y'know, solely my job, I think they'd be disappointed in just... losing. Time and time again. It weighs on you... and it weighs heavy."
He sighed heavily, letting his eyes drift closed as his thoughts bounced around in his noggin. He had so many possible options, but it really just boiled down to two. Should he try again... or just give up and walk away? That might screw the team even further, especially since they didn't have a reserve Seeker.... but when the actual thought of a first year being a better option reared its head, Seb had to realize it clearly wasn't good enough to not give consideration. He listened as Alice said she wouldn't blame him for wanting to stop. She said that it wasn't easy to push past stuff like this and that all their friends would support him.
That just caused Seb to sigh again, a heavy sound leaving him. Alice gave him a little cheek kiss, then offered to give some alone time. Instead, Seb tightened his grip, his arms wrapping a bit more firmly around her. "I just... I don't know what to do. I don't want to quit, because I really, really love quidditch... but I also can't shake the feeling that I should quit. My bad luck is just... spreading to everyone else. It's making the whole mess less fun for everyone else. And like..." he paused, wiping at his eyes before carrying on. "Sixty points. That's the total of every point Gryffindor's made since I made the main team. That's.. that's not even equal to HALF of one Snitch catch! A-and yea, our Chasers are probably the best ones, but it doesn't matter even a little bit when I'm the Seeker. It's not even like a one-off bad season, Liss. It's three of them! In a row! I'm not even like... we didn't get the cup, no. We didn't win at all! Not even sort of close to at all!" His voice rose with his frustration, even as he tried his best to keep himself calm. Instead, he was just stressing himself out further.
"I just hate that I'm the worst player in the entire school. I think they could put a cat on a broom and it'd do better than me." Well... maybe not Zoot. He didn't have enough paws. Though the thought of Zoot wearing little goggles and a Gryffindor scarf did bring a little serotonin to his brain.

Alice nodded her head as she listened to Seb let out the thoughts tumbling around in his head. Losing that many games could have a serious detrimental effect on someone and Sebby put his whole heart into the game. She wished she could just whisk away his bad feelings. When she asked if he wanted some alone time and he tightened his arms around her in response, a small smile curled onto her lips. At least he wanted to keep her around. "I know, Sebby. If you quit though, they'd need to get a brand new seeker. You're the only one with experience on the team." She was quite familiar with all the teams' rosters including their reserves and Alice knew that Gryffindor didn't have a seeker reserve. He said that he hated that he was the worst player in the whole school and she frowned. The stats didn't lie and he was accurate... but that couldn't stay true! Seb was chronically unlucky and that was spilling over into Quidditch, but even the chronically unlucky had to be lucky sometimes. "I can't say that it will change, but your bad luck has to end sometime. It's not like you're bad. You won the scrimmage game and you're great at practice. Your bad luck can't continue forever." Alice really needed to do something to cheer him up because it broke her little heart seeing him in such a bad mood.
Finneas MacDavis-Grey Gryffindor │ Fifth Year │ Fifteen Years Old │ Gryffindor Prefect │ Single
Finn huddled deeper into his hooded sweatshirt as he walked out to the pitch. He lucked into finding a bit of time when it wasn’t booked for a practice session and figured he could get a bit of practice in with Rey. He needed the extra practice as yet again, he was unable to make a save when it truly mattered, during the match against Slytherin. As usual, it was Hes trying to ram the Quaffle down his throat, and he never once managed to make a successful block against her in any match ever. While the win was nice and all, and this time he attended the celebration, it preyed upon his confidence and feeling of self-worth that he couldn’t manage to deny the hoops to the opposing Chasers.
Rey was called up to play in their first match of the season against Ravenclaw, and while the Badgers pulled off the win in a convincing fashion, and ending the Eagles’ streak of wins going back since Linsey’s final season, and the Eagles’ Chasers were kept basically penned up in their end of the pitch, and so Rey was never called upon to make a save, Rey also wanted to get in a bit of extra practice. There was the outside possibility she might be called upon to fill Emily’s shoes again, and Rey wanted to be ready. Finn reasoned that he could help out Rey and maybe help himself out, although Roxie said she might try helping him as well today.
As much as he wanted to help Rey out, he knew he needed to take action on his own behalf. He was tired of begging Linsey and Serghei to help him out, and these days they were busy with their own lives without him imposing upon their spare time. ‘I need to learn to solve my own problems. Can’t go asking Linsey to rush out here just because I can’t make a save to save my life. While I’m at it, there’s another bit of business I need to do something about, and I need to stop dragging my feet about it. Besides, it’s not like I’m asking Rey to –’
‘Thought that was you heading out this way. You could have waited, you know,” said Rey, appearing as though merely thinking her name was sufficient to summon her. The little redhead was wearing a mustard yellow Hufflepuff Quidditch hoodie, with an extra sweater and a long-sleeved Thinsulate shirt underneath for padding, black leggings and trainers. She had her broomstick slung over a shoulder and a spare Quaffle tucked under an arm, and she gave Finn a quizzical look as he responded, “Running a little late, thought you’d already be out here waiting for me.”
“Yeah, me too,” admitted the little Fourth Year sheepishly. “I can be ready whenever you are. So, what do you figure we do? Take turns charging in and taking shots at the hoops, while the other tries to stop the ball from getting through?” Finn shrugged, and replied, “Well, that’s what we do during a match anyway. Before we get into all that, I’ve got something to ask you.”
“Oh?” countered the little redhead, noting the change in Finn’s tone, and knew this was something serious. “Must be something important indeed. What’s going on?” Finn drew a deep breath, and he said slowly, as he felt his nerve already faltering, “I was wondering … if you’d like to … go to the big dance … together … with me, you know, as a couple? I know I’ve left it a bit late, and I’ll completely understand if you’re not interested, or if you’ve somebody else lined up already.” Rey looked at Finn blankly for a moment as she parsed out what he was saying, and she cocked her head to one side and asked, “And, you waited until we were out here to ask this why? It’s warmer inside, ye know.”
“Fewer ears out here to hear, ye know,” explained Finn, before confessing, “That, an’ this pitch takes a lot of my courage already, so … what do you think? I can ask Linsey to help with the dress, I’m sure. She’s probably already goin’ te make Ella look like the Crown Princess of Tara herself.” Rey held up a hand, and said, her Irish brogue becoming more pronounced as she spoke, “Nothin’ against yer cousin, Finn, but I think Mama and Nana would be hurt if’n I didn’t go to them first about a dress. Why are ye askin’ me, Finn? There’s plenty o’ prettier, better-heeled girls in the school, an’ any o’ them would be hard-pressed findin’ a guy like you and pleased as punch if’n ye were te ask them. I’m naebuddy, thot’s nae error. I’m a thrice-orphaned, thrice-cursed, broken doll from a scratch an’ dent sale, an’ m’brain’s sae scrambled it’s all I can do most days to focus enough to get through a day.”
Finn took Rey’s hand in his, and he said, “The Heulwens took you in, that means something.” Rey nodded her head, and said, “Aye, that they did, an’ I’m grateful everyday for them doin’ thot. They love me an’ I love them, and they made a part of their kin. Warts n’ all, I’m one of them now. Thot still doesna’ answer m’ question, Finneas MacDavis-Grey. Why me?” By this point, the little redhead felt as though there was a weight pressing upon her mind, and something was trying to tear away every good feeling she’d had a few moments before. As much as she wanted to belong there was the voice at the back of her mind telling her she didn’t deserve anything.
“I’ve always fancied you, Rey, surely you know that. One of things I looked forward to when we were kids was walking you home from school; two of us together, ye know, thought maybe we’d always do that. An’ after … well after … ye don’t know how much I missed that; how much I missed you. An’ then you came to Hogwarts, an’ I could see you every day again. Yer nae nobody, you’re Racheal Eir Huelwen-Ross, and ye matter to me, an’ thot’s why I want tae be a couple an’ go to the dance. Whether ye know it or not, yer one of those special sort of girls.”
Racheal gave Finn a puzzled look, as she wasn’t so sure about his last statement, after all, there was special, and then there was ‘special’, and special wasn’t necessary a good thing. “Special … how?” she asked hesitantly. Finn answered, “Yer not one of those girls that guys date …” he began, and Rey’s eyes took on a soul-lost look, as she said despairingly, “Gee, thanks, Finn …” The ginger-haired Fifth Year gave Rey’s hand a gentle squeeze when he finished, “ … yer one of the ones they marry.” Finn leaned in to kiss Rey tenderly, and when he did, she reached her arms around his neck and gave him a kiss in return with the desperate urgency of a drowning soul, as tears rolled down her face.

After doing some planning and some pestering, Roxie was quite excited. She knew that Finn was really upset about his goalkeeping abilities, so she had reached out to get some resources. Firstly, to Vikram. He had the highest save percentage in the school, and he wouldn't be facing the Lions again. To Hesperia, who was insane at the goals (when she could slip past Roxie, that was), and to Bieito, who was another strong chaser with a knack for helping. With hope, they'd be able to make sure Finn was plenty confident before the next game.
Walking out to the pitch, Roxie noticed Finn and Rey sharing a little kiss. "Hope I'm not interrupting anything," she chuckled a bit, walking over in her sparkly pink Gryffindor hoodie. "Actually, it's good that Rey's here too. I've gathered some of our best Chasers and I asked Vikram to come help you make sure nothing's going to get past you. Rey, you're more than welcome to join in."
With a bit of practice, she was sure Finn would reclaim his confidence before their next game. "Hey, sorry. I'm not late, oui?" Bieito jogged over, a cheery smile on his face. "Oh, bonjour, Rey! Good to see you here too." He adjusted his warm sweater, which was a deep sapphire blue, and grinned toward the two keepers. "We're still waiting on Vikram and Hes, who volunteered to brave the cold and help us out too. Hes is a beast at the goals, and Vikram can block dang near everything. I got a few Quaffles out, and we've got these two at the goals. Vik is going to focus on helping Finn, but after that, he can work with Rey too. We're going to have two of the best keepers ever seen." All they needed was some solid practice and a nice burst of confidence. Together, both halves of that would come to fruition.

When Roxie had approached him asking for him to tutor Finn in the ways of the Keeper, Vikram had been happy to help, though he did enjoy Roxie saying that he was the best keeper. Being a little prideful didn't hurt. And he couldn't argue with her, since taking the pitch third year, he had an impressive defensive record. Roxie had also asked Hesperia to come down to help him practice his defense since she was a beastly chaser. So on the day they agreed to meet, the two headed down to the pitch together. Vikram was keeping himself warm mostly with warming charms, since he wanted to be agile and ready to play. Hesperia, meanwhile, had borrowed a big coat from her boyfriend and was dressed as warmly as she could be. She hated the winter weather since she was naturally colder due to her half-vampire blood. But they both carried their brooms and trudged on down to the pitch to help out. Thankfully the ground wasn't covered in snow. They saw that everyone else was already gathered up at the pitch.
"Hey everyone, sorry we're late," Vikram said, a grin crossing his face. He set his Quidditch gear down on the pitch and did some stretches. "Alright Finn, start me out. What's your pre-game ritual?" he asked from the ground as he stretched his thighs. Hesperia stuffed her hands into her pockets and moved to stand next to Roxanne. "Jeez, it's really cold out today, huh?" she asked, shivering a little. At least her jacket was nice and warm and it had the benefit of smelling like Kas. She really wasn't looking forward to an additional practice, but Roxie had asked her to help and despite her meanness on the pitch, Hesperia was a big old softy. She couldn't say no.

‘Please don’t let this be just a dream,’ thought Rey, as she hung onto Finn and kissed him, before laying side of her head against his chest, so she could hear the beating of his heart. It would be her luck that the fulfillment of the most desperate of her hopes would poof into the shards of a sweet shattered dream, dissolving before the dawn in her subterranean dorm. ‘Please let this be real.’ No, she could feel Finn holding her close, and she heard his heart through the layers he wore to ward against the chill of the day.
Finn would have been content to simply hold Rey as he could feel her shaking, and knew it had nothing to do with the wintry breeze blowing across the pitch, however that infinite moment ended the instant Roxie spoke aloud, announcing her arrival. Rey was startled, and she quickly turned away to hide the blush coming across her face. “Um, no, not at all,” he said quickly, as he tried to hide his own embarrassment by adding, “Actually, we were going over a few things, and I … well …” As Roxie explained how she gathered help for the cause, Rey managed to recover enough to say to her, “Thank you, Roxie. I was hoping to get in a bit of practice too.”
As if to compound her embarrassment, Rey saw Beito jogging up, and he greeted her. “I was figuring that if Emily isn’t available again for the next match, then I needed to be prepared to step in again,” she replied; she knew it was a bit presumptuous to assume anything in regards to the Quidditch team, but if things fell her way again, she really did want to be ready, especially since they be facing the Snakes, which meant … her eyes widened as she saw Hes walking up.
So far as Rey was concerned, Hes was one of the best Chasers in the school, and Finn told her that he’d never been able to block any of her shots, and in her wake was Vik, who was definitely the best Keeper in the school. When asked about his pregame preparations, Finn went into what he did as he engaged in stretches, including how he made changes in diet and exercise based upon what a renowned Keeper whose interview was recently posted in ‘Quidditch Quarterly’ was doing. Rey came over and started doing her own stretches and warm-up. “So, what about your pregame preparations, Vik? What are we doing wrong that we need to fix?”
