“Atticus would definitely feel bad for them. Probably offer his blood-- no, we’re definitely not telling him they’re called anything else,” Michael huffed, and carefully shifted his weight when it seemed like Devyn might need a little assistance with balance. Not a lot, because Devyn had promised he wouldn’t fall into the water, but hopefully enough that being on his back wasn’t as much of a burden as Michael imagined it might be while trudging through muck.
“I’ll help you look,” Michael said after a few moments of just holding onto Devyn’s shoulders, although he made sure to massage them while he was on his back in thanks. “If any of those flowers or birds still exist anywhere on Alastor, we’ll find them, okay? Maybe you just need another set of eyes.”
It was possible that they would never find what Devyn was looking for. Or maybe he was remembering them differently. Or maybe a thousand years meant that nature took its course and those things weren’t going to come about on Alastor again. But he was more willing to hold onto hope when there were so many things about Devyn that made him hopeful.
“I moved around a lot as a kid. Ah, you knew that already. But I didn’t have anywhere to really settle down and grow. But I feel like I can do that with you and Atticus,” he admitted, even if he made himself flustered a little by his own honesty. The Reids too, of course. They were as much of his family as the others.

Devyn had to bite back a few more laughs than one, but when Michael had finished speaking he wasn’t going to risk Michael thinking he was laughing at him for being so honest.
It was sweet, honestly. “If we weren’t wearing masks, I’d kiss you.”
He’d have kissed him through them anyway if it didn’t mean having to set him down to do so. They were being productive and making good progress right now, anyway. His hands were resting on Michael’s legs as he attempted to help support him; he gave him a light squeeze instead.
“If I’m with you, I’m home. I look forward to exploring Alastor with you, Love of my Lives. And I look forward to spreading our roots and watching them grow. In this life and every other, we’ll leave good stories behind.”
They’d live lives worth remembering.
