Daanu, seeing as she did, did not find her brother's friends scary. Sight gave perspective others lacked. Other children feared the dark for much the same reasons, she'd found. Kechi did not know them, couldn't see, and was afraid. That set a firm little line between the younger sisters lips. She did not yet know how to call them up from the deeps, so it wasn't as though she could show them, explain that these friends were no more to be feared than their papaw's beasts. So she tried words.
Choosing with care, the pretty new knife laid down on the tabletop. Her reed pen came up again, scratching at the margin of a page in the book. No words or writing-runes the pirate had ever seen, but squiggly shapes took form under ink and fingertips. "Are you afraid of fish, Kechi? The big ones with lots of teeth?" This sounded like a good place to start.

"No, but if our brother could summon and talk to them I might be." Her instincts saw it as a threat, not that she thought her brother would attack her but stranger things had happened in more normal families than hers, it was a sort of irrational fear rooted in real fear perhaps. She didn't know she tried to hide that she could feel fear to those who were not family anyway. Weakness as a captain was a vulnerability as a human.
"I like seeing the big fish actually, makes me think its a healthy ecosystem an all."
She loved wildlife just like the rest of her family but didn't see the need to be training new creatures constantly, when her current critters retired she would train new ones but she was not a trainer like the others were.
"So they are just pet friends then?" Not the sushi that ate its owners or its owner's sister's ship.
She too paused the knife dancing between her fingertips and set it down to swig more ale. Strong ale but sad compared to the other stuff.

The thought of summoning sharks stopped the frown for a moment. Daanu quite liked sharks. Sensible creatures. Hadn't tried talking to them yet. "I do not know. They are fond of him, I think. Maybe he is their pet-friend." More and more shapes spilled out onto the page. She hadn't got much skill yet, but Daanu soon had the general shape down. The details still escaped her, but she could make out an outline now and then. In large part, it seemed shark-like. There were tendrils trailing before and behind, and more than two eyes, but overall Ushiruin 's friends mostly reminded his little sister of predatory fish.
Eventually she turned her book around to show Kechi the doodled being. "The sea is deep. Sharks swim in shallow water. His friends are like sharks. Not good. Not bad. Just sharks. So we must be in a sort of shallow water with them. And if that is true, then there must be deeps to this different water." She blinked her large yellow eyes, coughed softly. Daanu took a drink of her juice; she wasn't normally this talkative. "Ask him how to bump their noses if they get rambunctious."

Kechi paused, looked at Daanu, them looked at what she had drawn again.
“I… I’ve only ever just seen the tentacles, didnt realize they were sharks with uh many eyes, these would be the deep sharks eh, yes.” She looked pinderous for a moment, opened her mouth closed it… danced the knofe very quickly between her fingers. “Boop the snoot huh?” She eyed her sister.. though if they were just sharks with fancy hairdos and extra… eyes she could write it off as a deep mystery.
“You spend a lot of time with him huh?” A part of her deep in her heart was a bit jealous, there had always been the flame of rivalry between her and Ushiruin l, mostly coming from her which mostly came genetically from their father, she seemed to get the max dose of competitiveness though. Whearas the others were varying forms of mellow.

They looked close, but they were not sharks. Daanu knew this. Her brother's friends held a cleverness she'd seen in no animal. And there were bits to their shapes left out for the difficulty in doodling. Squiggly curves came easier to her hand than the sharp triangles of teeth. "Around him, yes. We are usually doing different things." ...But if it made her big sister more comfortable, the inaccuracies could stay quiet. That had been the whole point.
The pen was laid beside her book, and the knife picked up again. Slowly, one hop at a time, the game began again. Tap. Tap. Tap, went her blade on scarred driftwood. "Yes. I do not know if they have snoots to boop, but there is probably something like to that. Nothing likes being poked in the eye, for example. And they have lots of those."

Kechiri side eyed her sister, blade still dancing. Strange sharks were strange then. A crease reappeared between her luminescent yellow eyes. Crud so much for believing in the fairy tail. Oh well, she would be brave, her brother probably wouldn't sink her ship with her on it...probably.
He could at least help defend it. Maybe she would have to take him with her more often, though he did occassionally go out on another ship, a merchantman that did heavy local runs. It was strange seeing him occassionally on the deck of another ship. It felt wrong somehow, or did have that more to do with her talented brother being on the deck of some fat tub when he was already able to run a ship of her caliber..she had taught him during his babysitting of course how to do all the things she did on deck.
"I shall endeavor to boop the snoot then." She waived for the waiter to bring them their snack already.

Sailors, she had noticed, believed some strange things. Some might have been based on morality or religious scripts, but others had to do with luck and the attention of things they couldn't observe. It seemed sloppy thinking to Daanu, but then, a lot of people seemed to do that. Sailors aren't so bad as priests, I guess. Kechi was no exception, so by definition it had to be okay. At least until it hurt her.
Slowly, the knife picked up speed, hop by hop by hop. "It works on most anything with a good sniffer. There might be a couple other things you could do, if they make a ruckus. I will ask Ru for you later." Tap by tap by tap, the point accelerated. Soon little Daanu was matching her sister's pace, concentrating hard on this new game...
