Tobias beamed at both Nectaris and Cybele, holding his and Elliot's hands up a bit higher. "We've been figuring it out for like... six? Seven years? I'm sure we can figure this out, too." The look that he gave Zebulon and Diryas after that was warmer than the last one, but still no less firm, and he held it until Diryas was the one to look away first.

There was a brief furrow in his brow as he felt Elliot pull his hand away, but his protest died as he saw Elliot's rumpled jeans and t-shirt replaced by a dark grey suit with dark red piping. He took a long look, evaluating him where he hadn't had the chance earlier in the house. "Well, the neck straps are nice. Sturdy." He tugged at them lightly. "Do they snap off?"

Bewildered, Ransomite raised an eyebrow. "Probably? I haven't tried it." He looked over to Zebulon. "Teeg is fine. You would call me that even if I told you not to, anyway." At least it wasn't Abby or Ellie.

"I like your Christmas tree buttons." Tobias flicked one to get it to spin in a small arc. "Do they do anything special around Christmas time?"

A soft snort. "No."

Tobias ignored the look that Diryas gave Zebulon, shifting his focus to the silver objects hanging at Ransomite's side. "Oh, what're these?" He pulled them from where they hang before Ransomite could say anything. Twirling them slowly around, he watched the light glint off of them. "...These your weapons? They look like--"

"Christmas ornaments. I know." Ransomite reached up and took them back, slotting them back where Tobias had stolen them from, paying no mind to the amused quirk to Tobias' lips. "They used to be plastic." It was much easier to ignore the whisper of Chaos in the back of his mind, here, even if the presence of a princess of Order still made something crawl under his skin and down his spine.

"Well, you probably won't look so much like a dweeb after you purify, then."

Ransomite's brow furrowed, this time, mouth setting in a flat line. "I don't look like a dweeb. I didn't pick it." He straightened the buttons so that they were all facing the same way--up.

"Oh, I know you didn't pick it." Tobias kissed his cheek and then stepped to the side, out of Cybele's way. "Your fashion sense is better than Spirit Halloween's 'Evil Christmas Soldier'."

"Evil Christm--"

"Ready whenever you are!" Tobias said this to Cybele, primarily, but was looking back toward Ransomite over his shoulder. Ransomite gave a long-suffering sigh, rubbing the back of his neck and then bringing his hand forward over his head to pinch the bridge of his nose.

"Yeah. Yeah, I'm ready."

Zebulon merrily chimed in, "Highly recommend having multiple partners, honestly. For one," he snickered, "helps with dividing chores."

The look he gave Elliot Teegan as Tobias was looking at him and Diryas was somewhere between teasing and pointed.

Diryas and Tobias were acting like the cats they both loved with that staredown they were doing. Also: they were as married as they declared they are.

Diryas was the one to look away first, and Zebulon glanced down at him to evaluate his expression. There was a bit of a downward twitch to his lips which told Zebulon all he needed to know, and he offered Diryas a supportive squeeze before looking back over to Tobias and ... Ransomite, that was his name, right. Ransom. Either the Negaverse was holding his husband hostage or he was about to try to hold all of them hostage.

Considering he had seen Princess Cybele in action, he doubted that one would ever work. So he supposed it also came down to the question of what the Negaverse would really release. Did settling on Teeg matter? "You're not wrong," snickered Zebulon, as he watched Tobias move to start playing with Ransomite's outfit, "but I'm glad you like Teeg. Better than the bullshit your mother gave you anyway."

Zebulon rubbed his thumb over the back of Diryas' hand as he watched Ransomite summon his ... Christmas ornament stabbing elements. While he would have much liked to have something more threatening than a test tube, he had to admit, the Christmas ornaments were just what Tobias named, combined with the trees on his outfit and everything else about his getup...

At Tobias' title of him, Zebulon nearly choked on his spit.

"Toby's right," announced Zeb, his gaze sliding over to Diryas in hopes of lifting his mood as much as his was still in the mire. "He does look like a dweeb." A beat. "Spirit Halloween's Evil Christmas Soldier dweeb."

He took a deep breath.

... Well. Time to see where this was all going to land, he supposed.

“Hey, he’s not a dweeb,” Nectaris butted in with an over exaggerated pout, playful land bouncing on her toes but still as protective of her friends as ever. Still, since things seemed a little bit less tense now, she added with a, “I hope you remember how you got three cool husbands cause, l kinda need to know the story now. And also like,” she flushed slightly, “Maybe need the relationship advice.”

Yeah. That was gonna be a whole conversation. For the first time in this very inconvenient moment, she wondered if he knew Fulgurite.

“I mean, I enjoy it,” Cybele replied, to Zebulon’s comment about having multiple partners.

It was something they could maybe go into more detail about at some later point. For all that Ransomite might be distracted by one of his husbands fiddling with his outfit, she didn’t miss him saying he was ready.

She didn’t miss the seriousness in his voice.

She wasn’t going to wait until the situation shifted away from this happy moment in order to go through with it.

Cybele had never purified someone before, but she had an idea of how it would go. She’d watched it, on top of going through it. Being here, on the other side, it was just a matter of remembering that. It was just a matter of letting her instincts carry her through the rest.

That was what she told herself, at least, and the miracle was that it worked. Her crystal began to glow, and she held it out towards Ransomite, focusing on the feeling of Chaos in him and on burning it away.
PostPosted: Thu Jul 06, 2023 8:55 pm

"I wrote down everything I could think of, so if anything maybe I can read you stories out of it." Ransomite spared a wink her way, enjoying the brief moment of levity as she came to his defense over being called a dweeb. "As far as relationship advice, I can try, but I tripped and fell into everything." And, hopefully, he would get to keep it after everything-- "You could try asking Toby here. He's the one wrangling us."

Tobias rolled his eyes, but there was no bite to it.

Ransomite was, however, indeed ready. So he'd taken a deep breath and faced Cybele fully, Tobias letting go of his hand and standing further off to the side, staying out of the way. So that it was just him and Cybele. Him, Cybele, his conscience, and whatever magic she was about to use on him.

He had the fleeting thought that it would be very easy to have tricked him, to instead kill him instead of purify him, but there was literally no reason for that to happen. Even as something in him, something that tied him to Chaos, recoiled back from the light

Oh, oh that was bright--

At first, it was just bright, but so bright that he had to shade his eyes. So bright that his eyes stung and watered when he tried to look at it. It didn't escape his peripheral notice that he didn't see Diryas or Tobias shading their eyes. Was it just him? Was it just him staring into a small sun?

That's when the heat started. It was just warm, at first. A little uncomfortably so, but nothing he hadn't experienced before on a particularly sunny summer day. But then it got hotter. He thought, for a moment, about seeing if his neck straps did indeed unbuckle. It would probably help the heat some. But he didn't seem to actually be sweating, so maybe it wouldn't actually.

But then it got hotter.

He could feel the Chaos in him shrinking back, like a hissing, angry thing. All claws and teeth and bristling fur. At the same time, the parts of him it drew back from breathed easier, lighter. The shadows where it tried to hide shrank down, turned from ink to shade, from murky dark to cool breezes. Where it tried to hide in the open, the light repudiated it, taking the deathly sterility it tried to leave behind, where nothing lived, had lived, could live.

Would live.

But things would live there. Where Chaos left death, there would be life. Where Chaos left bodies twisting and warping, there would be healing. Instead of trepidation, there would be laughter.

Instead of echoes and whispers, birdsong.

Instead of sunbaked dirt, cracked and wanting and dying, water and soft grass.

He could feel the Chaos in him trying its best to hold on, to keep its grasp on him. It dug in its claws, and for a moment the light and heat hurt, before he realised that the pain wasn't his. The creeping darkness wasn't his, and the bright lifelessness wasn't his. The thoughts, the whispers, the urging to reach out, to tear and pull a glittering soul from someone's limp body--none of it was his.

He reached out, grabbed instead for the cool shade, for the gentleness in the light that Cybele was giving off. Even as his arms didn't actually move, he took the shade, the cool breezes, the water, the sunlight, the gentle nighttime, the quiet dusk. He took them, and he pushed.

And shoved.

Chaos released him, then, leaving what felt like furrows in his skin as it went, though he was uninjured.

All at once, he was back to standing where he had before, the light fading away, an errant breeze teasing some of his hair as he looked up. There was weight on his arm, and he looked down to see the round wooden shield attached there. He lifted his arm up and down a bit, experimentally, testing the balance of it and gratified to find it manageable.

Curiosity got the better of him, and he looked down at himself, skin still stinging from claws that hadn't truly existed.

"Ah, Earth."

Tobias was pretty insistently shoving them together, wasn't he?

Considering earlier, he was the only one who was. If it hadn't been for him getting in the way, Ransomite might not even be standing in front of Cybele at that moment. It was strange to feel the pit in his gut that still felt justified but mixed into a million nauseous knots at wondering if he would even be remembered, if there was even a point to any of this, if the betrayal should have felt as sour as it did and yet still as expected as it did, because Ransomite had been chaos the whole time despite everything--

But not the whole time, and chaos had been holding him to itself, taking him away from everything but his vocation and barely even not that.

Zebulon wondered if things would have been different if he gave in to the temptation to go bother him at church. He was a Jewish man by heritage and had no interest in conversion, but nothing said he couldn't go in the communion line and ask for a blessing. He had done his research. It would have bought him the time to corner him with a snide smile and a pointed ask instead of waiting for the one he wanted to murder to appear in front of him...

But that someone was burning away.

Zebulon had never seen a purification. His perspective on them was limited. He knew they happened. He might have spotted the results of one back when the Negaverse had taken over those machines--that Ransomite had seen too. This was seeing it in motion, watching those Christmas tree buttons disappear and that collar faded into something a bit more wide-shouldered, a bit more skin-revealing. His eyes traced that collar in spite of his emotions, in spite of wondering who was left in front of them.

He cleared his throat and found himself eyeing Diryas for a moment.

With a deep breath, his gaze slid back to the Squire of Earth and Princess Cybele, to whom he first murmured, "Thank you."

Even if he wasn't remembered, even if this wasn't the man they knew standing in front of them, Ransomite was burned away. They could ... work out the elements that leaked into the rest of Teegan's life later, if a later actually happened.

"Heh, look at that," Zeb was smiling in spite of himself. "You really were meant to protect the Earth the whole time."

It was different to watch a purification, or even to experience one, as intense as that could be, than it was to be the one channeling the energy that burned the Chaos away.

It was different from casting magic. When Cybele wanted that, she just said the word. She focused, perhaps, but only for a moment, and then the spell was cast. Now, her eyes narrowed with concentration as she could feel the Chaos that was left in Ransomite like a solid presence, pushing back against the light. Beads of sweat formed on her brow. This was like a battle in its own right, one that she'd never fought before, even though to the others, Cybele likely appeared serene, simply locked in concentration.

Little by little, the black faded from his outfit, and the darkness faded from his aura. Then, there was no Chaos left in him at all.

The Captain before her was gone, and yet the man was alive. He stood before her as a Squire of Earth,.

As the light faded, Cybele looked briefly at her hands, at her crystal. She'd done that. She'd done that. Exhaustion crept from her arms into her chest, but it was done. It had happened, and she'd been the one pulling someone from the clutches of Chaos.

Even as her shoulders slumped slightly, she was smiling.

"You're Earth," she replied, going for the obvious comment while her head spun slightly. "A true protector, now."

Nectaris on the other hand was just barely holding back all kinds of high pitched squeaking noises. She bounced instead, the grin just about splitting her face.

"You did it you did it you did it!" she was saying. "And you're outfit's so cool now, you, like, literally look like a knight, that's the cool thing about Earth."

She wanted to play with his sleeves.

He looked up as people started talking to him. He knew these voices, and the names that came with them. The grin that broke out on his face felt natural, easy. Mentally, he recited each of those names as he looked around. Cybele, the princess he owed a considerable amount. Nectaris, practically vibrating with excitement. To the former, he sent a grateful smile; to the latter, a laugh. "I look like I just got back from a Renaissance fair, but thank you."

Tobias--he knew his name was Tobias--wrapped his arms around his shoulders, pulling him into a tight hug. It felt right, felt comfortable, and he reached his free arm around Tobias' waist to return the embrace. He rested his cheek against Tobias' shoulder without thinking about it and was content to relax there a moment.

He could, however, see two more people over Tobias' shoulder. Something about the way--Diryas? He tumbled the name over in his mind for a second--Diryas was looking at him gave him pause. It wasn't a smile, but neither was it a frown. It was... neither. Both? Neither. He couldn't read the expression in Diryas' eyes, and that gave him a moment of pause.

Why was Diryas looking at him like that?

He moved his gaze a bit, to Zebulon this time, but didn't get much time to think about it before Tobias had tilted his chin up and was kissing him. Why was he kissing him? It felt natural enough, so he didn't pull away, but it took a moment before he thought to return it. If Tobias noticed, he didn't say anything or give any indication of it.

When the kiss ended, Tobias had spun him toward the others, and so he buried his confusion. He assumed there was a reason Tobias was kissing him, but he couldn't figure out what it was. That feeling sat uncomfortably in his stomach. In truth, it wasn't that he couldn't figure it out. There were probably only so many possibilities. Figuring it out wasn't the problem.

It was the fact that he didn't know already. He knew Tobias' name--he knew all of their names. Why didn't he know that? He knew they were important!

"So Teegan, you're an Earth knight now. And they're Mercury knights," Tobias gestured toward Zebulon and Diryas, the way that he said everything telling Teegan three things. One, his name was Teegan. Two, the other two were Mercury knights. Three, Tobias was saying it like Teegan should already know that. "Your shield is a lot cooler than the Christmas ornaments you used to have."

Christma-- Those must have been his weapons as an agent. Teegan laughed, using it to hide the fact that he was mentally scrambling. "Probably more useful, too."
PostPosted: Sat Jul 08, 2023 3:25 am

Nectaris wasn't wrong in him looking like a proper knight. Zebulon might have even bought the squire title from ... whoever Teegan was on the other side. Probably a question worth asking, probably a question worth addressing once Elliot Teegan finished addressing Cybele and Nectaris and kissing Tobias.

Perhaps that should have been a good sign if anything. They could figure it out, if they stood, battered but through it, on the other side. They were snuggling standing up. Surely that meant some part of the unfairly ******** actually remembered them, and he can hash out the fact that Teegan had ******** betrayed them all ********> he was a mess of emotions right now. Tired. Exhausted. Sad. Betrayed. Relieved. Joyful. And somehow, the only expression that made it to his face was a grin as Tobias spun Teegan in their direction.

It was hard to do anything but even as he attempted to sort through the mire in his brain. Were his eyes still glistening? They felt heavy in a way he didn't like.

To Diryas, he murmured, "Well, at least he purified." Diryas' expression was relatively unreadable, but Zebulon had a sense that Diryas was just as mixed up as he was.

Could Teegan even tell that, now?

Zebulon listened to what Tobias explained, wondering if that would key him into what Teegan actually remembered. Probably more useful implied that he didn't remember what his Negaverse weaponry was--Zebulon would have still rathered that s**t over the test tube, thanks--but how much did that actually tell them? The kiss hinted something was familiar with his exchange with Tobias, so maybe they had stuck. He found himself taking in the Earth Squire in front of them up and down in a way that probably looked more salacious than it actually was.

Zebulon pulled at that space university again, replacing himself with Promethei as he said, "Promethei like this. Who are you like that? Just knew that I was Promethei the moment I held onto that test tube."

His brows knit.

He should stop pressing. He should-- "And what do you remember?" And there it was.

It was super convenient that, after powering up again, Promethei decided to ask the hard question, the thing that was probably kinda in the back of everyone's mind. He asked what Teegan remembered, and that meant that Nectaris didn't have to. Instead, she could stand there, tapping her fingertips together in the tiniest little clap while him and Tobias kissed.

Like, she wasn't even jealous about the situation anymore. She was just fangirling. That was the cutest, most romantic thing she'd seen in her entire life. Someone sweeping you off your feet right after you got purified? She couldn't even. If things worked on cartoon logic, there would've been hearts in her eyes.

She was gonna have to make sure to do that for Fulgurite.

Promethei's question also gave her the time to ask about more of the fun stuff, once the two guys turned back to the group.

"Ren fairs are cool, though," she told him, still pretty much at maximum excitement. "I mean, I've never been to one, but," she blinked, "Oooh! We could go! Can we go? Not like this, but I bet I could make some killer costumes. Making clothes is, like, my whole thing."

Everyone else was doing the identity thing, so she powered down, too. Her outfit was simpler than sometimes, just a pink t-shirt and some shorts, but she did have a couple of barrettes in her bangs. "I'm Livie!"

Any remaining tension might have gone completely over Livie's head, but Cybele felt it. She was feeling it herself, as Sylvite's enthusiasm took over the scene once more, and despite the full sized wings that stretched out behind her, Cybele felt small.

She understood, deeply, that purification helped things, but didn't always fix things just like that. She saw that while Tobias stepped forwards, the others stayed back.

"Is he going home with you?" she asked. It also depended on what he remembered, she supposed, but it wasn't as if Teegan seemed uncomfortable in the presence of his husbands. "I can also offer a place to stay for a bit, if it's needed."

This she said to Teegan directly, as it was ultimately his choice.
PostPosted: Fri Jul 14, 2023 7:38 am

How much did he remember?

Did he need a place to stay?

Who were all of them?

'A true protector'?

Who was he?

That last one, he could answer. He looked down at himself, then back up to the others, glancing back toward Cybele to make sure he pitched his voice so she could hear him. "I'm Emain Ablach." When he said his name, something felt like it slid into place in the back of his mind, like a tension in his posture released. When had that gotten there?

...All things considered, it had probably been there a very long time.

"I know who you are." He accompanied it with a chuckle. That wasn't a complete lie; he knew their names and looking at them gave him a sense of aching familiarity. There was a reason he hadn't pulled away from Tobias' kissing him. It felt right. "Zebulon Raymond Castaneda, Diryas ibn Hanan ibn Fakhir Castaneda al-Baksh, Tobias Ezra Kasabian, Nectaris a-k-a Livie, Cybele." Teegan gestured to each of them in turn. The names rolled easily-enough off of his tongue.

Maybe that would disguise the fact that trying to remember anything about them gave him a headache. It was like the memories were right there, right at the fringes of recollection, right where he could almost grab them. When Teegan looked at Livie, something about her reminded him of tea and of crickets at nighttime. When he looked at Tobias, Diryas, and Zebulon, he could catch vague recollections of mischievous whispers, of sleeping bodies curled and sprawled around and over each other, of laughing around a table. Looking at Cybele gave him nothing even that concrete, and he wondered if he'd known her as well as the others.

But that was it, and nothing was solid enough to picture in his mind. He knew these people had been important--were still important--but could not pin down why, and trying wasn't helping his headache. "We can probably go to a ren faire eventually. Let me adjust first, though, yeah?" His response to Livie was accompanied with a gentle wink. Speaking of adjustment... "I don't know if I need a place to stay or not?" He reflexively glanced over to the other three men standing there, then away from them.

"He can stay with us, obviously." Tobias looked to Diryas and Zebulon as he said this, tone bright, but the brightness faltered a bit when he saw Diryas' expression.

"I'd rather he didn't for now, if he has somewhere else to go."

Ah. There it was.

Emain Ablach. Promethei had no idea what that meant, but whatever it was, at least it wasn't whatever the ********. Ransomite was dead now, he supposed. And that was what he wanted, right? He wanted that guy dead who found it fit to drain him to exhaustion in a public park.

"Emain Ablach, squire of Earth. Feels like it suits you."

He... Still had a lot to deal with, both mentally and emotionally, and he had a lot of things to ask him, but some of the tension in general started to unwind. There was no more chaos in the atmosphere, Teegan had kept his word and his promise, and Zebulon himself had said that the first step to forgiveness was at least to get out of the Negaverse. That had happened. He had gotten that much, even with the pressure of the betrayal still strong in his mind.

The deepest part of the tension did not leave until he heard the names echoed to him. It spoke of memory a bit more solid if he even remembered those middle names. It was... Interesting that Teegan specifically clarified that he knew who they were, though. That wasn't quite an answer to what he remembered. It just said he knew them.

... Unless that was all he remembered?

Promethei's brow knit in a worry he couldn't quite remove from his face entirely, but he attempted to stop himself from voicing it until he had time to ask deeper questions. Perhaps they could also discuss that betrayal, then. (Did he even remember that? An unfulfilled, undiscussed point felt even worse. Promethei couldn't quite let that go. He couldn't. That wasn't allowed.)

Besides, there was an important question to address that took the attention away from the memory's holes or lack of them. Tobias wanted them to let Teegan stay with them. And to Promethei, that felt obvious too. There was a sense of obligation there, if anything; Promethei was still mad but he was going to keep to his own words and declarations. Why send him to some extended stay hotel bullshit when they had room--

Oh. He stopped himself, glancing down to Diryas.

Promethei wasn't going to interfere with that. Diryas was angry, too, upset too, had just tried to murder Ransomite several hours ago for good reason that Promethei would still stand behind. Diryas had reason to want space. He had reason to say for now, too. Teegan had left. That was the first step.

Promethei didn't interfere. He would have rathered just take Teegan with them, if just because it would make a confrontation faster, but -- Diryas needed space and he wouldn't disrupt that.

He offered a lop-sided smile to Tobias, and glanced toward Emain Ablach next even as he looked away from them, offering, "Perhaps some space for emotions to simmer down would be for the best? Dise did say for now."

Promethei breathed harshly, quietly adding, "Still love you. Emotions have been running high."

All through Emain introducing himself, and listing off the names, and saying that maybe someday he and Livie could go off to the fair, Livie was as grinning and bouncy as she’d been when the purification light hit Ransomite and left him someone new.

Then Diryas was talking, and her expression flipped like a switch.

Her eyes narrowed. “You-“ she sputtered, and it looked like maybe she was trying to breathe or something and not say anything stupid, but in the end her paper thin filter couldn’t catch the “You don’t want him?”

It was a good fifty percent shock in her voice, because she didn’t even know how to process that, but as her gaze snapped over to Zebulon she was figuring it out, and looked considerably more disgruntled. “You don’t want your husband?”

She opened her mouth to say more, but then she felt the heaviness of a hand on her shoulder, and she looked over to see Cybele’s piercing eyes staring down at her. No words came out, not even a that’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard in my entire life.

She had thoughts, though. She sure had thoughts.

Whatever he’d done before, which, like, honestly didn’t even sound like it had been all that bad compared to what a lot of agents had been doing, he’d stopped. He’d repented. He’d gone through the literal pain of Cybele’s burning light, and also, like, paid the bigger prices of memory stuff and having to step away from big parts of his own life.

He’d done a lot.

And then one of his husbands was gonna say not to come back to his house, and the other was gonna not even argue against that?

With Cybele holding onto her, she didn’t say anything more about it, but she huffed. Then she stepped out of her grip and towards the new Knight. “Okay, you’re coming home with me, then.”

She exchanged a glance with Cybele, who of course nodded obediently.

“It’ll be all cute, it’s where I adjusted after I purified. You can meet my family. And like, he can come visit.”

She nodded at Tobias, who she had already decided she liked.

Diryas had nothing against Livie. He didn't even know her, not really. He paused in a brief moment of surprise when she rounded on him before answering her narrowed eyes with his own. He let her talk, let her struggle to get out whatever it was, though he had a pretty good guess as to what she was so angry about.

Cybele's hand on Livie's shoulder had stayed his words also.

But who the ******** had said he didn't want him? Had 'for now' not been part of the ******** sentence? Was he not allowed to ******** process his anger? His grief--yes, grief? Was it not grief to learn why someone important to them had been virtually nonexistent for so long? Only to come waltzing back into their lives?

As a Negaverse agent, at that?

Sure, he had purified. That meant he was honestly and fully willing to cast chaos aside for order. But that didn't erase what he had done, what he hadn't done that he should have done, and all the time wasted in the interim. The magic that changed Elliot--no, not Elliot--did not also change the hurt that Diryas had felt, that he knew Tobias had felt, that Zebulon had felt.

It did not magically make it all better. Was he not allowed his space to <******** process that?

Teegan buried the bewilderment, the sting, under the curiosity at Livie's offer. He didn't know why they were angry with him, but he was smart enough to theorize, and he didn't know enough to argue back, but he did know better than to. "I would love to meet your family." And he meant it. He had the feeling he'd had one of his own, but thinking about them only gave him a vague, distant heartache. Not the same way the faces in front of him teased at the corners of his memory, tantalizingly right there, right there and ready to come to the fore if only he could let them--

And he wanted to. He wanted to understand why it tightened his chest to see the look in Diryas' eyes that he couldn't quite figure out. He wanted to understand what the look even meant.

And it was right there--

"Thank you again. If you ever need anything, let me know," he said to Cybele with a warm, genuine smile. "We should probably break this up, though."

Tobias looked between Teegan and Livie. "Well! Make sure you give me a call!" burying the frustration, the way he wanted to drag Teegan to him, tell Diryas he had to just suck it up and let Teegan back into the house. But he had known Diryas since they were kids. He knew better, no matter how much it pissed him off and made him deliberately avoid looking at either Diryas or Zebulon.
PostPosted: Thu Jul 20, 2023 8:10 am

Livie's sudden expression flip caused Promethei to jump minutely in a way that might have been more obvious than Diryas' reaction--until his eyes narrowed, anyway, and it didn't take Promethei's experience with Diryas' flat affect to figure out that he was boiling. He was sure that Cybele had managed to stop a fight from breaking out because he was even chomping at the bit to say something, anything, about the meaning of giving emotional distance for the sake of their quartet remaining that way. Diryas needed time to process. Tobias needed time to process.

And so did he.

Promethei was never particularly good at shutting up, and so what made it out of his lips was, "Better to take some distance for now before saying something rash turns that into forever."

He didn't want it to turn into forever. He hardly wanted it to turn into a for now, still feeling that sense of responsibility. But this would be better for Diryas. For him, probably, until he felt ready to formulate his arguments in a cohesive way that wouldn't result in a fight about something he wasn't even sure if Teegan even ******** remembered. (That wording had been specific, hadn't it.) For Tobias, even if he didn't know it.

He grunted under his breath.

"Thank you again, Cybele," he turned to her first, nodding. "Need something from me, just ask. I can do what needs to be done."

And then, to Livie, "Let me know what his new phone number is."

At least Zebulon could talk to Teegan independently and vet just how much of Elliot was remaining under the brightness he seemed to be projecting. They were all too ******** emotional for that to be the reality.

Himself included. He needed a g-ddamn nap.

It was only then, a good thirty seconds after the fact, with the entire group staring at her, that Livie realized that maybe she had talked too quick, and said something dumb, and maybe she shouldn't have gone there, actually.

Maybe they even had a point about wanting to process stuff. That one was questionable, she didn't get why it wouldn't be easier to do that with the dude himself around, but, she knew better than to say anything else on the subject even if it meant having to literally bite her tongue to keep from talking any more.

Cybele's hand was still on her, which also helped, because those fingernails felt kind of sharp, even where they were just barely touching her skin. She took a breath and then managed, "Yeah, it'll be all cute, we've got a spare room and stuff."

She didn't look to hard at any of the others, not now.

Cybele did, though. Each man got a nod, deep and thoughtful.

"Yes, we should return now," she said, and as they joined hands once more, she would take them back to Earth.

The moment her feet hit pavement, she would drop the wings and take on the guise of an Eternal again, and in that form she would shy away from the lights of the club, and from Nectaris, and she would find a quiet spot to process everything that had happened that night.
