He tried to object again, but Howth sputtered instead, a burn creeping across his face. "I'm sure we'll have plenty of blankets," he muttered. He knew perfectly well what she was getting at, and it left him full of more questions than he could ever hope to address while standing here. Mostly he wondered what Xaawo thought of him. He must have seemed rather pathetic, if feelings he was not aware he possessed were so obvious to everyone else. Perhaps voicing the feelings he did have—awe of her bravery, jealousy of her cleverness, admiration of her artistry—would clarify his position. He honestly didn't know anymore.

Howth made an effort to think of topics that did not feature him sharing body heat with anyone, giving up when his cheeks remained warm. It was good to hear Zumei laugh again at least, even if it was at his expense.

"So, um, that's all I suppose. I'll find you when I return? If that's all right? Remember, if you need me for anything, send a message to Secer."

"Yes, of course." He looked down at his fingers where they had twined together and gently pulled them free. "I'll bring you souvenirs and stories."

Howth might not have been able to pinpoint Zumei's feelings beyond the distraction of his own thoughts, but he was keenly aware that things were different somehow. He hoped with time they would go back to how they had been, no crossed arms and false cheer. He smiled, though it was still a little muted.

"Happy trails, Zumei. I'll miss you."
