“I don’t know!” Riker threw his hands in the air, puzzled by his own appearance. And he certainly wasn’t going to tell Maisie that he felt as though he knew more than he could reasonably explain. Like how he could feel something from that creature before it burst into dust.
“Call me whatever you want, I don’t care,” he decided, because in the end the only thing that mattered was that she wasn’t hurt. “But I’m not a superhero,” he corrected, because he knew he wasn’t. He was just… different. Apparently.
“Look, just… if we’re done here, can you pass me my bat and we’ll part ways and never talk about this again.” It was his turn to cut ties since she clearly indicated before that she wanted nothing to do with him.
He took a step forward to hold out his hand for his bat.

Maisie stomped her foot, because she was that mature. She frowned and glared and wanted to keep arguing. Riker had to know what was going on, didn’t he? He was just pretending to be ignorant! He didn’t want to tell her anything because… because… Well, Maisie didn’t know. Maybe he didn’t want other people finding out about superheroes. Maybe he was trying to gaslight her!
She huffed and shoved the bat at him.
They touched for a moment, his hand against hers as they both gripped the bat.
Then something called to her, or to them. Something beckoned, and the city around them seemed to vanish.
Or they did.
A warm breeze blew in their absence, rustling the pages of Riker’s notebook which still laid upon the ground.
