“I don’t know, Jett did comment on the importance of taking things slow,” Orien couldn’t help but smile as he gently teased his precious boyfriend. And then gave him several more quick kisses as he held him close.
“I really am proud of you. You’ve worked so hard, and you have such a good eye for this stuff. Jett definitely isn’t going to regret giving us a chance. We’ll make sure he knows how much we appreciate him and what he’s doing for us,” he insisted, but he was sure that Kaelan felt the same way about making sure Jett knew.
“I promise he’s okay with all of it. I mean. With the records at least.” He hoped Jett wasn’t okay with what happened to them, or how the system failed both of them. Orien was hoping that maybe Jett was more willing to give them a chance, now that he knew the horrors they’d both faced already. They were capable of surviving nightmares, so why not bring them along for all this end of the world stuff?
“I love you more than anything, Kay,” he let out a shaky sigh, and rubbed at his face again. “I… uh… Would you mind helping me with my paperwork? My hands have been bad today… I think it’s the stress of. Everything. Oh, but finish yours, first. I’ll rub your back as you work on it.”

“It’s okay, my hands are shaking, too. I was worried, but I’m also excited. I can help you with your paperwork. Maybe we had too much sugar for breakfast,” he said, with no regret. They’d taken home plenty of leftovers after dinner last night, and while he knew they should probably finish those off, he still wanted to go do something to celebrate. Just something small, maybe! But something nice!
Something to feel normal.
He hugged Orien once more, squeezing him tightly before he began to carefully untangle himself so he could focus and get back to work.
When he was back in his seat, he took Orien’s hands in his own and squeezed them before kissing his knuckles. “You’re doing a really good job. I’m proud of you. I don’t know if I have a good eye, but whatever I can learn, I will. I want to be good here. And I know you’re going to be. And the Court, too. We’ll be good for them. I want to get stronger so I can protect you. And so we can go to Mirrorspace, I want to explore. Like–go on an adventure. With you.”

Orien missed Kaelan immediately. He knew it was incredibly clingy of him to want him in his lap at all times, but the closer they were, the better he felt. Kaelan was like a balm for his heart and mind and body. Without him, he was certain he would be much worse off. Maybe still in prison. Maybe dead, he didn’t know. All he knew was that he wanted Kaelan to be happy and healthy, first and foremost. In doing so made Orien happy, after all.
“I would love to go on every adventure with you. For the rest of our lives,” he smiled and leaned close. He wasn’t trying to get all up in Kaelan’s space! But Kaelan was holding his hands, too.
“Doesn’t matter where. Mirrorspace. The rest of the world. Our apartment,” he added with a sly grin, but quickly straightened up so he wouldn’t be chastised for not being professional. “As long as you’re with me, I want to do my best.”

Kaelan leaned close instinctively; he had no idea where his space ended and Orien’s began, and as far as he was concerned, they might as well have just had the same space altogether. Orien had a beautiful smile, and even if he was teasing, Kaelan appreciated how hard he was working to stay professional.
And, he was being so romantic. His heart was pounding again, and he picked up the pen so he could get back to work. The faster they got out of here, the faster they could get home. To have an adventure.
“Same. There’s no one else I’d rather be with. No one else I’d want to be with!”
He leaned against Orien and even if he was just filling out paperwork, he couldn’t wipe the smile off of his face. “Do you want to watch the sunset together? We could find the highest parking garage and have a picnic up there. And then maybe gather some energy on the way home. And then if we haven’t had enough adventure, we’ll make one at home and finish up with a bubble bath. Unless you had something better planned?”

Orien shifted a little so Kaelan could go back to actually working on their paperwork. He placed his hand behind Kaelan’s back to gently rub, both with his palm and nails in an attempt to comfort him as much as possible.
“That sounds exactly like what I had in mind,” he grinned and leaned over to press a kiss against Kaelan’s ear.
Oh, but he was also trying to be professional, so he sat up straighter again and glanced over his shoulder to make sure Jett wasn’t back yet.
“I don’t know how you expect me to watch the sunset if you’re sitting right next to me, though,” he sighed, a bit overdramatic about it. “I would much rather be looking at you. But... and this is a huge but, because I can’t imagine ever being away from you, but if we were apart and I saw the sunset, I would probably just think of you more, after seeing it with you.”

Kaelan’s face was still a bit pink; he reached up to wipe his eyes on the back of his sleeve and half-turned to give Orien a look. “We have a lot of things to catch up on. We didn’t get to have good dates. I think sunsets are romantic. And picnics are, too. Even if you’re just grabbing fast food. And being up high, away from everyone else in the world? There’s just something romantic about the way the colors melt out of the sky and the lights start coming up. I want to experience everything with you.”
He couldn’t help himself; he’d filled out a few lines on the page so he leaned over to kiss Orien’s cheek. “But you can look at me in the sunset. And I’ll look at you. The light gets all pretty and golden, it’s not like normal daytime light. I bet we’ll look at each other and kiss.”
He could hardly keep his hands off of Orien now, so it was a no-brainer to think that he’d be able to resist when they were alone and away from the world. “We could explore the city a little bit and find a nice place to get a meal.” Somewhere affordable because they weren’t going to go wild about it, but he wanted to have a special evening! “And we’ll look for some tall buildings. Maybe some places to hide mirrors and see if Jett will give us some. Can you hear my heart over there? It’s pounding in my ears, I’m so excited.”

“Just kiss?” he gently teased as he leaned closer so he could at least keep his voice to a whisper. He didn’t want Kaelan too embarrassed and red when Jett came back, but Kaelan was right in that they had a lot to catch up on.
And he couldn’t help but smile as he listened to all the things Kaelan thought of as romantic. He would definitely have to try and remember that. Maybe he would write it down so he couldn’t forget.
Instead of just hearing for Kaelan’s heartbeat, Orien reached over to place his hand against Kaelan’s chest and rubbed it gently as though to try and ease his overworking heart.
“I want to experience everything with you, too. Including work,” he sighed and glanced at the papers. Jett would probably be back at any moment, but not before Orien could steal one more kiss.

Initially, Kaelan huffed indignantly, but there wasn’t any trace of real agitation. He was trying very hard to keep the smile off his face so he didn’t encourage Orien’s teasing. The hand on his chest might have been enough to rile him up if he hadn’t already been thinking about how much more he wanted to do than just kiss.
For all that the touch could have done to him, instead it did actually relax him a bit.
“We’d better actually get some work done,” he said, and managed one more kiss before he scooted his chair closer to the desk and leaned forward so he could show Jett that he could actually complete an assignment. It helped that he’d already memorized his information and Orien’s, but he wanted to be extra sure so he pulled out his binder, where he’d tucked brought all of their important documents, and before he wrote anything important, he double checked.
“Have you ever been this excited about a job? Technically this is my first. I’m kind of afraid I won’t be as good as I want to be. I hope I can learn quickly. I hope we get to stay together, I’m actually a little nervous about meeting other people,” he said; his papers were mostly finished, so he’d moved on to Orien’s so they could be caught up.

“I haven’t had any job that I got to be with you for, so no, I haven’t been this excited about a job before,” he hummed as he watched Kaelan work, grateful that he was so thoughtful and prepared and already had his important information with him.
“Thank you, Kay. You’re too good to me. I’ll make it up to you, for me making you fill out my paperwork, I mean,” he sighed, but tried to be helpful by keeping things out of the way for Kaelan. He could hold a binder! He could make sure it was closed and everything was carefully stored away inside!
“You’re going to be great, so just remember to breathe. Everyone is going to love you. I mean, I’m going to love you more, and I’ll literally punch someone in the throat if they said they were going to try and steal you from me -- I’m kidding, I wouldn’t punch them in the throat,” he said, but he didn’t sound like he was being sincere. He absolutely would punch someone in the throat for Kaelan.

“Orien, you have already punched someone in the throat for me,” he huffed. “I already know you would do it again. But,” he looked up from the paper for only a second. “They can try and steal me all they want, no one’s better for me than you. And if they try to win me over, I’ll just tell them I’m taken. I’m not interested in anyone else. No matter what they want, I only want you. Promise.”
He brushed his ankle against Orien’s and held his gaze, just because he didn’t want Orien to worry. If Kaelan was going to go to school, it meant they might be separated for a little while. If they were going to be out in the world, they might meet other people.
So, it was important now. To make sure that Orien knew he didn’t want anyone else, no one else was ever going to be a threat to them.

“He deserved it,” Orien mumbled under his breath, not sounding remorseful at all. But he did look up when Kaelan promised there was no one else. He nudged Kaelan’s ankle back with his own and nodded.
“I know,” he said quietly. Orien knew that Kaelan loved him and wouldn’t want anyone else. He was mostly grateful for that, but part of him sometimes wondered if Kaelan would be better off with someone who didn’t threaten to (or actually) punch people in the throat for looking at him the wrong way.
He knew things could get worse, but he was going to do his best to make Kaelan proud.
“There’s no one else for me. It’ll only ever be you, Kay. I can promise you that, too.” He didn’t know how long their forever would be, but he would do everything he could to make sure it lasted as long as possible.
