Stirling watched as Effie left the shield, and how Effie’s father scooped the boy up…how happy they looked together…how.
Utterly happy they looked together.
For a moment she simply stared and then as they both moved through the shield once again and it vanished a moment later, she forced a smile on her face, pushing down the feelings of jealousy that had decided to raise their stupid heads. “I guess that worked, though I’m not sure if it was because of me wanting to let you in or because you had him so…I’ll just have to practice some more, that’s all…um. THank you all for helping me…I appreciate it.”
She felt strangely tired now, and it was good to know that she wasn’t defective and that perhaps she would gain more control over her power with practice and time. “...I’m starving…do you all want to eat now? I think it’s a good time to eat if you do!”

Ephesus let out a squeal of laughter when he was picked up, and then it continued as he was tickled -- although he tried not to thrash about too much! He didn’t want to hurt Alastor when he was just trying to make him laugh. Besides, Alastor never tickled him so much that he couldn’t breathe, so this was fine to enjoy for a moment.
“Oh, food sounds great,” he said a bit breathlessly anyway as he kept an arm over Alastor’s shoulder in case it made it easier to hold him. He was glad that Stirling seemed to get as much as she could from their experiments, and was even happier to hear that she was ready to jump into what they brought for her.
He didn’t want to take up too much of Alastor’s time, and wanted to make sure he was giving his friends enough attention as well, so he leaned close to press a kiss on Alastor’s cheek before wiggling a little to indicate he was ready to be set down. Although he didn’t return to his friends’ sides before giving Alastor one more hug.
“Want to sit down? I’m always tired when I use my magic,” he admitted, proud of Stirling for being so efficient with hers already.

Alastor wasn’t really worried about Ephesus’ flailing; he was pretty durable and Ephesus was always gentle. He’d let Ephesus down as soon as he gave clear indication that he wanted down, and he patted the boy’s back before he ran back to his friends.
“I am too. And I don’t even know if I’ve used mine to its full limit,” Amarynthos said. “It took me a lot longer to figure out my magic. I’m still not even sure that I’m using it right, but I’m really proud of you for working so hard to figure yours out. That definitely sounds like it warrants a good meal. Do you want to power down and go eat at the table? We can catch up. I want to hear all about what you’ve been up to.”
Without the beacons their energy signatures were giving out.

Stirling nodded, drawing in a breath and letting her Squire form fade, leaving Brooklyn behind. “Food sounds great, and thank you all for your help. This was a lot of fun and it just makes me want to practice all the more so I can be really useful and be like…Captain America or whatever, crazy cool person with a badass shield…ah. “
She pursed her lips and then shrugged. Atticus’ dad would just have to deal with her cursing. She wasn’t going to change herself. There was no point. She was who she was. “I hope that the next time we hang out I’m stronger again too, that would be epic!” And then she wouldn’t have to feel so far behind. And maybe she’d have a pretty cape too. But if not. At least there was food now! And friends. There was seriously nothing to complain about, so she wouldn’t.
