Ephesus clung to the front of Amarynthos’ clothes as Amarynthos lunged forward to try and get the woman away from him. But more than that, he could see Amarynthos change.
A quiet sob escaped from the pain of someone mishandling his starseed, hand in his back. In better circumstances, he would have told Amarynthos how proud of him he was, and how handsome he was. He wanted to tell him now, but all Ephesus could do was press as closely against Amarynthos as he could in the hopes that it would be enough to help him stop the woman.
It wasn’t.
With his starseed suddenly torn from his body, Ephesus went limp in Amarynthos’ arms, no longer conscious. Lucasta was faster than she was, but it didn’t take her too much longer to catch up. On patrol as a civilian, it was the shouts of panic that drew her and Lucasta’s attention.
She powered up while it seemed as though the Captain was distracted, making sure to hide behind a tree in the darkness so she wasn’t seen.
Varuna had seen the two Squires before -- one of them a Knight now. The other looking worse for wear. They’d been on Alastor, and she found out later from Ganymede that the fair one had been adopted into her extended family.
While it seemed as though the Captain was being distracted by some kind of magic, they needed to get away from her as soon as possible. Varuna held up her hands and pushed her magic towards the woman, a mound of snow rising up and rolling quickly out from under her.
She looked around quickly to make sure Lucasta was okay, and then stepped closer to the boys. Quote: Super Sailor Scout Attack: Snow Slide Snow suddenly materializes within a eight foot radius, twelve inches deep beneath the feet of Varuna's opponent(s), pushing them up and off solid ground, then rolls out from under them at the speed of a fast treadmill, lasting only about ten seconds. Very high potential for the opponent to slip and fall and get soaked with snow even as it disappears after it melts. Twenty-five foot attack range from Varuna. Can be used three times, four times her final limit.

Having more power didn’t feel like much of a benefit when she held Ephesus’ life, his soul, his everything in her hand.
She could have teleported away with it. She could have eaten it. Crushed it. Stored it away, never to be seen again.
Atticus could have died.
Amarynthos’ heart stopped in that second because there was nothing he could do. She could pull his starseed out like it was nothing. Like fabric and flesh and blood and bone were air.
Elliot wasn’t weak. He was active. He was athletic. He ate healthy food and got plenty of exercise. As a Squire, he’d been her rank. She shouldn’t have been able to get so much of an advantage on him unless she was skilled--and obviously she was. He thought he was doing well, but she took Ephesus’ starseed like it was nothing.
Strength meant nothing if he didn’t know how to use it.
If they’d been alone, he might have lost Ephesus.
So it was a miracle that Lucasta showed up with backup. It wasn’t Michael and Devyn, but it was enough.
The Mauvain knocked Carnallite back, away. Amarynthos kept Ephesus close to him. He released his grip on her; he didn’t care about her. He was keenly aware of the shooting pain from his ribs, but his priority was making sure that Ephesus didn’t get hurt on the way down–and making sure his starseed was safe, and back where it belonged.
He cradled him close as he guided him to the ground, and his hand shot to the starseed like it was the only thing in the world. The staff-like weapon never left his hand and he held it up just enough that he thought he might be able to strike out if she tried to get close.
He felt cold, but he thought it must have been from fear. It didn’t register that the Senshi had used her magic, he hadn’t even seen it.
“It’s going to be okay,” he promised softly. His voice trembled, but he sounded firm. He’d never held a starseed before, he’d never pushed one into someone’s chest. He held it like it was cracked glass and rested it over Ephesus’ chest even as he tried to scoot back with him.
He didn't know if Ephesus could hear him but he repeated the phrase once, twice. It was a mantra, maybe as much for him as it was for Ephesus.

Another aura.
In her efforts to defend herself against the cat, to pull herself out of the magic that dazed her, Carnallite hadn’t noticed a Senshi, hadn’t noticed anyone. Where had she come from? Had she risked powering up so close? If only Carnallite had seen.
Snow. It seemed to roll out beneath her — seemed to lift her, almost — like a strong tide. Between the cat and the snow, Carnallite barely managed to keep herself upright. She dropped to a knee, aiming a dark glare for the pale Senshi who’d come to save the two boys.Lucasta bared her teeth. Having already used her forehead beam, she didn’t have much strength to make this a proper fight. The Captain went down, but not for good. She was strong — perhaps not as experienced in the war as some of the other agents, but proficient.
Fortunately, there was another starseed, bright and welcoming, that might be able to hold her off with a bit of a boost.
“Varuna, your pen!” Lucasta called. Before the snow had even faded, Carnallite was climbing back onto her feet. Some of her hair had come loose, but other than that and a set of claw marks on one thigh, she hardly seemed to be affected. She certainly wasn’t tiring, even after her brush with their magic.
With the Knight and the Squire temporarily indisposed, their attention either reserved for the other or nonexistent, Carnallite summoned her weapon and took aim for the Super Senshi in white.

Her pen?
Varuna’s attention had been on the Captain. She was preparing to send another blast of snow her way, but when Lucasta called for her pen, she quickly pulled it out to toss to the Mauvian, trusting her with it and suddenly realizing why it was needed.
There was a moment of surprise that washed over her. She knew that she’d focused a lot on her schooling, and that maybe she could have had more power sooner if she actually kept trying, but she’d all but given up the thought that she would ever have enough experience for her starseed to have more to unlock.
She was glad she was wrong.
The Captain was nearly on her as Lucasta quickly focused on her pen, and Varuna took the risk of closing her eyes. Just long enough to call to her starseed.
Sparkling with crystals of white and silver, with wings and feathers now adorning her outfit, Varuna held her hands out again, and this time summoned her newly unlocked magic. Quote: Eternal Sailor Attack: Snowy GraveAn avalanche of five foot deep snow materializes and sweeps through a fifteen foot radius, with enough power to knock someone down. (Naturally, it would thin out around the edges.) Unlike a real avalanche though, once the snow stops moving, it doesn't solidify, allowing someone to struggle their way out of any snow prison that might have trapped them. It lasts thirty seconds before the snow starts to disappear, lasting a total of forty-five seconds. Can only be used once. Varuna is in danger of being caught in it as well if she is prevented from getting out of the way. The attack range is about thirty feet for its center. To Ephesus, it was only a moment, but the pain was the same from when he’d collapsed against Amarynthos. With Amarynthos’ gentle guidance, the sparkling starseed returned to Ephesus’ chest.
He gasped when he opened his still tear filled eyes, and looked around in panic even as he reached for Amarynthos to cling to. He wasn’t so oblivious that he didn’t know what just happened. And given the change in positions, he knew that time must have passed.
There wasn’t time for him to thank Amarynthos for everything, wasn’t enough time to make sure he was okay, wasn’t enough time to reassure him that he would be okay. There was snow nearby, rising up and piling onto the Captain that attacked them, and the bright white Eternal Senshi that hadn’t been there before was by their side, trying to get them up on their feet and away from the wave of snow that was rolling in all directions.

Amarynthos’ attention was briefly stolen by what was going on in front of him. Ephesus was his priority, but he didn’t want to put him in danger by falling into pure carelessness. He had a vague idea what was going on but he was having a hard time focusing on anything but returning the starseed before something worse could happen.
The burst of power from a Super Senshi to an Eternal Senshi was enough to bring him some small relief, but Ephesus breathing reminded him to breathe, too. There had been another moment of strong panic when he tried to determine if he’d done something wrong with the starseed, between that and when Ephesus opened his eyes.
He wanted to brush the tears from them, but he was afraid that if he let go of Ephesus, something horrible might happen. The snow didn’t seem so dangerous, but practically speaking he knew they should move. The Senshi seemed familiar enough, so much so that he knew he trusted her–especially when Lucasta arrived with her.
“It’s okay,” he said again to Ephesus, in case he hadn’t heard them any of the other times.
He was more aware of the pain from his side right now, but it didn’t slow him down. He pulled Ephesus close. “Can you stand? We have to get up. But it’s okay.”
Briefly, he made eye contact with Varuna and nodded, more than grateful for her help. He didn’t want to admit that they needed help staying safe and getting up, but he was more than grateful to have her there.

Her weapon never made contact. The aura of the Super Senshi seemed to swell, rising in strength, shining ever brighter; with it, the Senshi’s clothing changed. Those tell-tale wings adorned her back.
A wave of snow carried Carnallite away. She didn’t stumble so much as she was consumed by it. The snow surrounded her, pushed her back, knocked her off her feet. She was completely engulfed in seconds, her vision obscured, her brain rattling with each tumble. When she came to a stop, she couldn’t say how far it’d taken her, nor could she immediately view her surroundings. The only indication she had that she was still in range was the collection of auras nearby — a Knight, an Eternal Senshi, and a Squire. And the cat, too; they had such fickle signatures.
Carnallite dug herself out of the snow. The chill of night hardly seemed to affect her, though her uniform wasn’t well insulated for winter. The snow was different. Wet and frigid, difficult to ignore but not impossible. Still, the sooner she was out of it, the better.Just in time, Varuna came into more power. Lucasta allowed herself to feel pleased for a job well done. The new magic gave them just enough time to regroup. Lucasta scampered away to avoid the snow, circling around at a sprint to reach Amarynthos, Ephesus, and Varuna.
“Easy now,” she cautioned Ephesus. “You may need some time to recover. Let Varuna and I handle this,” she told both boys. “You’ve done well. This one seems relentless. I don’t expect she’ll want to leave empty-handed.”
Even as Lucasta spoke, the Captain was climbing out of the snow. Lucasta eyed her disapprovingly. Nothing about her was familiar, but pieces of her seemed to fit the description of someone Valhalla had taken on before.Carnallite was not going to look at the cat. She wasn’t going to pay any attention to her ruddy fur or her golden bow or the ridiculous little corsage she wore on one paw. Carnallite was only going to take in enough details for a full report. She would not become distracted. This cat was an enemy. Carnallite had the claw marks to prove it.
She grit her teeth, tightened her grip around the hilt of her sabre, and teleported out of the fading snow.
Carnallite reappeared directly behind the Eternal Senshi — Varuna — and delivered a hard kick just above those pure white wings.

Varuna didn’t want to take chances. She wanted to make sure the two knights were okay, and she nodded to acknowledge the Knight’s nod, but she knew they had a limited amount of time to escape. She was tempted to try and call her friends. Maybe one of them was nearby to help, but she also didn’t want to get them involved in a fight that seemed like it would only end with the Captain being taken out completely.
She’d had her hands up and ready to throw another of her attacks at the woman.
But the Captain had teleported.
A kick to the back was not going to be felt well in the morning, and Varuna hissed as her arms and hands got scraped up in her fall.
She still held up her hands and called her magic from where she’d been knocked to the ground, hoping that she could catch the Captain as her feet touched the ground, and knock her down that way. Quote: Super Sailor Scout Attack: Snow SlideSnow suddenly materializes within a eight foot radius, twelve inches deep beneath the feet of Varuna's opponent(s), pushing them up and off solid ground, then rolls out from under them at the speed of a fast treadmill, lasting only about ten seconds. Very high potential for the opponent to slip and fall and get soaked with snow even as it disappears after it melts. Twenty-five foot attack range from Varuna. Can be used three times, four times her final limit. Ephesus didn’t want to be a burden. He didn’t want to be pathetic and unable to do anything. He hadn’t even been able to protect himself, so how could he protect Amarynthos? He clung to him, anyway.
He felt weak and out of breath. He heard Lucasta’s warning and knew she was right. He could probably stand, and nodded when Amarynthos asked him if he could, but he needed every ounce of Amarynthos’ support in getting to his feet.
When the Captain teleported and kicked the Eternal Senshi from behind, Ephesus winced and squeezed his eyes shut as he held onto Amarynthos.
“What do we do?” he quietly sobbed, grateful that they had help, and that Lucasta was there too, but he didn’t know how they could stop someone who seemed so relentless and determined to hurt them.

There was something immediately, easily reassuring about Lucasta. She could be snippy and blunt, but she’d always been honest. Amarynthos trusted her. He wasn’t arrogant enough to think that more power meant he should automatically be more skilled or prepared to handle a Negaverse Captain that just wouldn’t stop, and Ephesus had been hurt.
Lucasta knew what she was talking about, and if she told them to let her and Varuna handle it, he wasn’t going to fight her on it. He didn’t like feeling useless–he wanted to reassure them that Sessrumnir and Alastor were coming–he just didn’t want Carnallite to know.
So, he didn’t speak, but he nodded enthusiastically so she’d know he understood.
He winced when she teleported behind Varuna and struck her, but he pulled Ephesus closer. There was more snow, and he didn’t want Ephesus to get a cold on top of–on top of whatever having your starseed out of your chest could do to a person.
His hand instinctively went over Ephesus’ chest, as if he meant to ensure she couldn’t get at it again. “I’ve got you, it’s okay. We just–it’s just going to be a minute, okay? They’ll be here soon.”
Amarynthos didn’t think the Negaverse had magical hearing powers, but he whispered it all the same. “I have my–I don’t know what this is actually,” he said, and held his staff thing tightly. It didn’t have the same weight as a baseball bat but he was sure he could swing it if he had to. He just wasn’t sure it would hit her, not when she could teleport like she was.
“Just back up with me a little bit, they’re going to worry about us if we stay too close. There’s a tree there, let’s get back against it.” He didn’t think she could teleport through a tree, but he didn’t know. Every time he was around someone from the Negaverse it felt like they could do something else he wasn’t prepared for.
Lucasta had faith in the Senshi she’d shown up with, so Amarynthos did, too.

Carnallite was quickly learning to despise the snow.
She wished teleportation didn’t require effort, that she had the experience and the power to do it as often as she liked, but she’d already learned there were limitations to it as a Captain, and she was rapidly drawing near to them.
Perhaps using it had been a miscalculation. She could’ve gone without, gone after them on foot, and used less energy, stretched her reserves a little longer. Without it, she wouldn’t be tiring. Nothing about this fight would have fazed her. She was against multiple opponents, but none of them were particularly skilled.
The snow took her feet out from under her. It was the same magic the Senshi had arrived with — not as powerful as the previous attack. Did that make the previous one new, or was the Senshi reserving her strongest magic?Lucasta put herself in place to guard the boys. With the tree behind them and her in front… Well, it wasn’t much of a defense, given her size, but it was better than nothing. She had faith in Varuna because she had to, and because what she knew of Varuna convinced her that her faith would not be misplaced. Varuna was quiet, but strong — certainly no wilting flower.Again, Carnallite was up before the snow had disappeared — it vanished quicker than the last attack; Carnallite made mental notes of every detail she could. Frigid and soaked, Carnallite nonetheless pushed herself forward.
She could outlast the Senshi. She was sure of it.
And if she couldn’t, she could take at least one of them out before she went.
Carnallite covered the renewed distance between them on her feet this time. She ran, she raised her sabre—
Then she teleported again, reappearing by the tree where the boys sought refuge, bringing the blade down as she did.
Maybe she would regret it, hitting her limit prematurely.
Or maybe she’d get at least one more prize for the night.A feline yowl erupted as Lucasta threw herself at the Captain again. The Captain came from the side; she was quick, but Lucasta was, too. She pounced, aiming for the exposed portion of the Captain’s thigh.
The Captain had her tricks, but Lucasta had one, too. She dragged her claws over the exposed skin, then, once she landed, assumed her humanoid form.
Like this, her energy signature was a beacon, but it gave her more weight and better standing to tackle the Captain to the ground.

With Amarynthos’ hand over his chest, Ephesus reached up to grab hold of it. Not to tear it away, but maybe because he felt the same way. Even if the Negaverse seemed to be able to reach a starseed through someone’s back as well as their front. But Amarynthos’ protectiveness was a comfort, and Ephesus sniffled and nodded as he watched with growing panic as the Eternal Senshi fought with snow.
But Lucasta was there, too. She might have been a cat, but she was experienced and she knew what Chaos could do.
And maybe there was some shame that Ephesus felt. He’d wanted so badly for this Captain to just talk to them and give them a chance. He didn’t want to believe that she would hurt them. But she injured Amarynthos, and she kicked the Senshi, and she almost--
The Captain was suddenly gone, but reappeared with her blade, like she was going to strike them down. Ephesus shrunk against Amarynthos and held onto him in his silent panic and fear that this would be the end.
Except Lucasta was still ready to fight, ready to turn into her humanoid form if it meant giving them a chance. There was guilt he felt, too. If they weren’t trying to protect him, they could have escaped without getting hurt.
Amarynthos wouldn’t leave his side, Ephesus knew that, but that didn’t make him feel like there must have been more that he could be doing. Something else. He had so much hope that he wanted to hold onto. He just wanted to help and protect those he cared about. He just wanted the fighting to stop.
He didn’t realize anything about him had changed. He was too distracted by the bright beacon of pure energy from Lucasta. But in his hand that had been holding Amarynthos’, his weapon suddenly appeared. It was longer than before, and the crown’s orb had changed. He kept holding onto Amarynthos, but closed his eyes and willed whatever magic he had, hoping it would be enough to help. If nothing else, he hoped it would help Amarynthos feel better. Quote: Knight Weapon: A more ornate golden honey dipper.
Channeled with the power of hope, Ephesus uses his magic to heal moderate burns and wounds. The longer he channels his magic, the faster the wound is healed. Major burns and wounds can be greatly aided, but not healed completely. He cannot heal life threatening injuries but he can stabilize them until proper medical treatment can be acquired.
The person experiencing the magic will have the distinct taste and smell of honey. Those who are usually averse to the smell and/or taste of honey won’t find it unpleasant. It has a calming effect, and fills the target with hope that everything will be okay. Any anxiety or emotional distress the target is feeling will also be tempered, or eased completely.
Can be channeled up to 60 seconds. Sessrumnir was grateful for Lucasta’s energy. It gave him enough of an opening to power up while anyone else would have been distracted. He could feel the auras change as he and Alastor drew closer, but while he’d told Devyn that it was an Eternal, one Knight, and a Squire, well… that quickly changed to two other Knights by the time he pushed his way through the bushes and grabbed hold of the Captain’s arm, and yanked her as hard as he could away from Lucasta, the Knights, and Eternal. By the time Sessrumnir and Alastor showed up, Varuna was back on her feet, although she was certain she was going to be in pain for a while--
Or thought she would be. There was a distinct smell of flowers or… honey in the air from near the two young Knights. The pain from getting kicked was waning, and despite her anger and frustration at the Captain for attacking a couple of innocent children and Lucasta, she felt as though she could take a breath for the first time since before powering up.

At first, Amarynthos didn’t even register that it was Ephesus’ energy signature right in front of him. He felt the presence of a Knight and his immediate thought was that it was Sessrumnir, but– No, now there were two. And another Eternal Senshi. Okay, good, they were here. He didn’t relax, though; Lucasta’s energy signature was overwhelming but he hadn’t missed how she’d immediately jumped into guarding them from Carnallite. He didn’t know how the Captain had so much energy, or why she was still fighting. She was outnumbered! She should just give up and go away. He kept Ephesus drawn close to him; he wasn’t letting him go for anything. He could smell honey, could taste it. He knew the tell-tale signs of Ephesus’ magic even before he felt the warmth spread through him. And, finally, there was Sessrumnir. And Alastor. The other Senshi was getting up, and she seemed okay. There was no way a Captain–no matter how much she could teleport, no matter how sharp her blades were–could take on all of them. He didn’t relax yet, but it was a relief all the same. And, he’d have been lying if he said he didn’t appreciate the way Sessrumnir yanked Carnallite away, or the way Alastor followed after him and used his full momentum to collide into her as if he were trying to knock her further back from everyone.

Two more. A Knight, and another Eternal.
Carnallite swore under her breath. No sooner had she been pulled away from the cat than she was whirling to face the two newest arrivals. What difference did two more make? The White Moon were weak. They were untrained. Most of them seemed to be little more than children…
She found herself knocked back.
Not children. Not these two. The Senshi she didn’t recognize, but the Knight…
“Sessrumnir...”
She could take him. On her own, one-on-one, without distractions or aid, Carnallite was certain that she could hold her own. She knew the magic he had at his disposal. He wouldn’t be as easy to take down as Valhalla had been, but she could do it, drag him back to the Dark Kingdom, throw him in front of the General Sovereigns and the Queen…
Not with two Eternals there to make a nuisance of themselves. Not after having already exhausted most of the energy she had to teleport.
She could call for backup, but who would answer? Who would receive the call? Would they be enough? Would they help or hinder? Would they even be prepared? She knew the sorts of things Sessrumnir had at his disposal. She paid attention to the database, to all the muttered rumors and gossip. Did others?
Carnallite swore again. She didn’t like the unpredictability of it all.
She cast her gaze around, from Knight to Eternal to Mauvian to the other Eternal, taking in all the details she could.
“Next time,” she said.
Then she vanished a final time, back to the Dark Kingdom. For a moment, uncertainty seemed to hang in the air. Lucasta waited for the Captain to appear again — perhaps another attack from behind, or a lunge from the side — but they were faced with nothing but a subtle shift in the breeze. Her aura was gone.
Lucasta picked herself up. She brushed dirt and a few twigs away, picked a wet pine needle out of her hair, tried to make herself look presentable after the brief, inelegant wrestling match she’d begun when she tackled the Captain.
When it became obvious that the Captain had decided to take her leave (wisely, in Lucasta’s opinion), Lucasta directed what she could muster of an unimpressed stare toward Sessrumnir and Alastor.
“You’re late,” she said, without any heat at all.
She took stock of things. Varuna, an Eternal now. Amarynthos and Ephesus, now Knights. Herself, a bit disheveled but otherwise unharmed.
Remaining as she was might attract too much unwanted attention, so Lucasta shrank back down to her feline form. She padded closer to Amarynthos and Ephesus and gently brushed up against them.
“Are either of you hurt?”

Sessrumnir was waiting, ready for the Captain to reappear. He didn’t stop moving though. As soon as she vanished, he reached over to grab hold of Alastor’s hand and help him back to his feet. They needed to stay on their guard and as mobile as possible if they wanted to keep any advantage they had.
And then finally… it seemed as though she was actually gone.
He gave Lucasta an exasperated look, and let out a breath he’d been holding, although he was still trying to catch his after running. They couldn’t have risked driving when the signal was so close.
“We can’t stay here,” he said quickly, looking from Lucasta, who had shrunk back down to her cat form, to the boys who were now Knights, to the Eternal Senshi who looked familiar.
“Varuna?” he verified, to which she nodded. Not only was she at Alastor to help them, but he’d learned something else about her recently as well.
“You know who I am?”
As he spoke, he drew closer to the boys, also wanting to make sure they were not just okay, but that they would be protected from any surprise attacks. “I do,” she nodded again. She could feel the new energy around her starseed, but she didn’t take time to look at herself just yet. She wanted to make sure the two young Knights were okay as well.
And she crouched down (with a grimace of pain) to offer her hand and give ear and chin scratches to Lucasta if permitted as thanks for her help. The kick hadn’t been pleasant but she would survive. It wasn’t as devastating as a horse’s kick would have been, in any case. Sessrumnir and Alastor were there. Ephesus could have cried in relief. He did cry. He let out a quiet sob against Amarynthos’ shoulder as he clung to him. He thought that they might not have made it long enough for his dads to help them, but they were so lucky that Lucasta and Varuna were in the area.
“Mary got hurt. She kicked him really hard,” he sniffled, trying to wipe his eyes and be able to talk without his voice breaking. “I can-- I can try to help,” he sobbed the broken sentence as he tried to catch his breath and held his new staff a bit tighter.
“Thank you. Thank you,” he sniffled quietly, addressing all five of them. He was relieved to be able to get a chance to go home.
Oh, but something he remembered about why they were there--
“We thought someone needed help,” he said then, looking up at Amarynthos and then to the others. “That woman… she came out from the trees over there,” he nodded.
His eyes were still leaking tears. He didn’t want to know what would be found but… they couldn’t just ignore that someone needed help. Varuna frowned when they were told someone needed help, and she stood so she could make her way over to the trees.
The body was there. Lifeless. Still a Senshi for now, but would likely revert back. Maybe Lucasta could help with that. Despite wanting to stay close to the boys to keep them safe, Sessrumnir was quick to follow Varuna to the area. He pushed back a branch, made a show of looking around, and then shook his head.
“They must have gotten away. Had a chance to escape when you showed up,” he lied, but hoped it was convincing enough that two scared boys wouldn’t have one more thing weighing on their conscience.

Alastor watched the empty space where she had disappeared.
It didn’t matter if her aura was gone, it was only a small relief that she hadn’t reappeared. They couldn’t stay in the area. She could have easily been getting backup to return. A promise of next time could have been any time.
Alastor spent little time holding Sessrumnir’s hand; he didn’t know who was watching or from where, and his husband had made it abundantly clear that the less anyone knew about how close they were, the better. On his feet, he brushed himself off but kept himself alert.
Just in case.
“I’m okay,” Amarynthos insisted, despite the shooting pain up and down his side. He tried not to put a hand over the area because he knew how conspicuous that was. It was distracting enough that he didn’t notice the lie Sessrumnir fed them.
He even breathed a sigh of relief and rested against Ephesus like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders.
Alastor knew. He could see it on Sessrumnir’s face. He could tell by the way Varuna and Sessrumnir lingered over there. The boys didn’t move closer to try and verify, and if they’d tried, Alastor would have just made some excuse to keep them away.
“You can save your energy,” Amarynthos insisted. “You already helped me a lot, it’s okay. You look really pale, anyway. It hurts,” he admitted, with the concern of someone who had only just stubbed his toe. “But I’m okay.” He could breathe–with a bit of pain–and he wasn’t coughing up blood or rattling when he moved. Sessrumnir would probably want to give him a better check up back home and he wasn’t going to protest.
“Thank you,” he said, first to Lucasta and then to Varuna, and to Sessrumnir and Alastor. He’d had adrenaline rushes before but this was enough to make him dizzy. He wanted to power down and go home and make sure Atticus was actually okay. He didn’t know what sorts of damage a starseed could take, but if there was something that needed to be fixed he’d rather take care of that first.
Alastor moved closer to the boys and gently rested a hand on Ephesus’ shoulder. “Thank you for getting here before we could,” he said to Lucasta, and nodded to Varuna to pass the message her way, too. “I appreciate you looking after them.” And saving them from the Captain. She’d done a fair bit of damage and he didn’t want to think what else she could have done–especially if that Senshi hadn’t gotten away.
“We should probably get them home. Are you two going to be all right?”
He didn’t want to leave them with a body–especially not if they weren’t sure what they wanted to do with it–so he glanced at Sessrumnir to make sure they could figure out a plan without worrying the boys.

Lucasta allowed herself to enjoy the pets from Varuna without appearing as if she was. She had her dignity to maintain after her tumble in the dirt.
The most important thing was to ensure the boy’s were taken care of. Lucasta tried to suppress her frustration over Ephesus’ tears. She wasn’t frustrated at him, moreso the situation. He was a good, kind boy who only wanted to help, yet she could not squash her own misgivings. He was a Knight, but it didn’t seem to her as if he was meant for war. His fate wasn’t like that of a Senshi, who had no choice in what they were. As far as Lucasta was aware, Ephesus and Amarynthos weren’t even like typical Knights. Their starseeds were new to this power, and they had no lineage to any Wonder.
She couldn’t help but wonder why. Why these two boys. Why not someone more emotionally prepared for the burden.
Lucasta stayed by them while Varuna and Sessrumnir went to investigate the area by the trees. The less of them that went to look, the less chances there would be for anyone to let slip that Sessrumnir’s reassurances were a lie.
She tipped her head to accept their gratitude, first Amarynthos, then Alastor, but she didn’t preen under their praise. It was her duty, and she would do it again, gladly.
“We’ll scout the area,” Lucasta said of herself and Varuna, “and ensure that Captain doesn’t return while you retreat, give you some cover to power down away from here.”
And we'll take care of the body, she didn’t say.
“You’ll both want to rest,” she told the boys. “Heal. You did well.”
They were alive. That was all that mattered right now.
