Normally, if Maritza was being this complimentary, he'd think she was up to something. Perhaps wanting him to take care of a chore for her, or do something unpleasant regarding the kids or their home. But... he could concede it was one of those times when she was being warm and almost sweet. When she pulled away, he almost wanted to follow her, but he recognized that she was trying to psych herself up for it, so he resisted. Instead, as she slumped back into her seat, he retrieved the needle and heated it again, making sure to stay turned away from her this time so it didn't scare her.
Only when the metal cooled again did he turn back, moving to her side, carefully placing the cork behind her ear lobe--
The actual pinch of the needle was done quickly, efficiently, and thanks to the fact this needle had the metal pearl at the tip of it, he didn't need to remove it to put in the stud after.

Maritza was just as petrified now as she’d been earlier, but there was a resigned element to it. If she wanted it gone after Marcella saw the piercing then she could simply take it out. All she had to do was prove to a child that a simple needle wouldn’t harm her. So why was her blood still moving so fast? And why did she close her eyes when Uquin came close? Even if he hadn’t hid the needle from her sight she still wouldn’t have seen it.
What if he messed up? What if he got it crooked and needed to try again? What if he jabbed her head inste-
Oh. It was done.
Cracking open one eye first, Maritza slowly followed with the second and looked at her husband. He was no longer holding the stud or the needle, but…all she’d felt was a pinch? Reaching up Maritza tentatively prodded her ear and sure enough there was the little stud. “Huh.”

It was all done quickly, clinically, and for a moment after the deed was done Uquin leaned back to watch his wife with unreadable eyes. When the realization finally hit her, it took everything in him not to chuckle at her again. Instead, he gently smacked her hand from her ear, then moved to her other side, leaning over to retrieve the other studded needle from its case.
"I'll be here to keep it clean, but when you go back to work I'll send some ointment with you." He instructed as he heated the other needle, looking at Maritza in case she suddenly decided she was still wary of the other one. "Will you let me finish the other side, or shall I wait?"

Maritza narrowed her eyes to glare at him for the smack before lowering her hands into her lap. Her ear was sore now, but not unbearably so. It was no worse, really, than any of the bruises she so frequently sported.
"Might as well do the other side." She was less worried about backing out now than she was about avoiding it entirely in the future. A part of her knew if she was allowed to forget just how little it actually hurt the panic would return. "Is it bleeding at all? I can't feel any blood."

Was it? Uquin hummed and angled his head to look, but other than being reddened and annoyed, it didn't seem to be bleeding. "No. It might leak some clear liquid tonight, but that's normal." Might as well warn her now. Before she could change her mind, he moved into position and pierced the other. Once finished, he cast about for a hand mirror and plucked it from the table where he'd placed it before, passing it to his wife's hands so she could inspect her new earrings.
